I had a few friends who didn't know of this trick so I figured I'd share this with you all and see if it helps anyone!

Also, it should be obvious, but the card will have to have been activated at some point.

Edit: As a few of you have pointed out, a small amount may be needed on the card for some sites to accept it. A dollar or two is all that's needed typically, which seems a fair trade to avoid being scammed or having your info leaked. I hope that helps!

This is a really good idea for google play and xbox store. I had my informatiom get stolen and the theives got a cool 2.32

Good trick for some services, others may make a small widthdrawl on the car to make sure it has money...

Many websites now ping back your credit card operator to see if it's still valid. Might not work everywhere

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I've tried that. The sites say they don't accept prepaid debit cards

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These card numbers are in a different range than regular cards, many sites won't accept them.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use a virtual card number. Most banks let you generate them for security reasons for online shopping

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My bank (ING) offers "webcards", which use a separate account and physical card to be filled only when you buy something (online or offline)

For sites like the New York Times who offer a cheap 6 month trial then force you to call them to cancel then place you on hold forever.

It works well for hotel reservations as well. Give a new CC when you make it to the hotel. No "no-show" charges.

Use cash it's cheaper

Thank you thank you thank you!

Throwaway card sounds like standard service in Revolut

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

life tip: if you see free trial and it request a credit card number, then don't use it, you gonna end up getting scamed

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

This doesn't always work. When the bank number is entered it is identified as a temporary number and the vendor has option to reflect these.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve been doing this for a while. It works wonders.

6 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 2

So what, do you load money onto a gift card and use that as your debit card?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You can get them at the store, it'll have like $50. So you spend $49.67 or whatever, then keep the card around and use it to sign up.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You can also use paypal so your cc isnt shared either. Though youll have to remember to cancel free trials.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If a "free trial" requires your credit card info, you know well enough that there's nothing free about it.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Dude, what? Netflix's free trial requires credit card info, and it's very much free, if you cancel before it runs out. They even remind you.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I just signed up for 3 months free Spotify Premium. With a real card, because I'm tight, not brokeass

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

When I had only a dollar or two left on these as a teenager...nyello porn.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This doesn't work very often. There is no zip code associated with the card so if the sign up requires that of the card, it's a No-Go.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like some taxis don't charge the card until later. This doesn't stop you from possibly owing them money.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tried that but they check them.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

go to Privacy.com and use the infinite tossable cards you can create. or just set a limit so it's never charged.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those of you too lazy to cancel your free trial on time.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never heard of visa gift card...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But some merchants don't accept pre-paid cards, so bring a back-up.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of sites won’t accept them.

6 years ago | Likes 182 Dislikes 5

True, good point! But it never hurts to try ?

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

You have to register them for online use alot of the time pretty much just putting your name and address attached to it

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

"A name and address" just make sure to use the correct zip code

I always used Hugh Jass.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. Many don't accept this. My Dad always bought these for me on birthdays. I could only do gas. Or I couldn't even buy gas. Don't do it

6 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

Huh, weird. I've used it for trying new streaming services multiple times and had no problems. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

No worries

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which ones?I have a stack of Visa prepaid I've been buying for 20 years, got a stack of 'em 2 feet tall. Found a total of 4 nonworking sites

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Additional tip: Attach it to paypal - if the site takes that, it can't even see the card, and it works fine with Paypal itself.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shit, that expense must pile up. I couldn't find anywhere online that sold them for less than $5 on top of the balance. What the heck are »

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you using them for that you'd have a stack of them? I haven't run across a "free trial with card" site in over 10 years.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Usually less than 5% of the total, which is a hell of a lot better than a standard credit card. I used most of them in college. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Except that these cards cost $4-6 to activate. Just put a reminder to cancel in your phone when you sign up for a free trial

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend here, (points at the mirror) doesn't get it.

You can watch movies for free online too if you know what you're doing (without pirating through torrenting etc)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The app "Privacy" is a good option too. Uses ghost cards that you can activate/deactivate instantly and manually set the max spend

Just an FYI - using for privacy for free trials is technically against their T.O.S., so they may shut your account down if they catch on.

Privacy.com - creates proxy debit cards with rules that you can specify. Max $/month, one time use (burner), total maximum amount, etc. ?
