I'm lucky in that I have family who would never ask me for money just because they know I have it. On the other hand I'd be the last person they'd ask because they know I don't have any!
I traded in my 8-seat car for a 5-seat car because my friends always wanted me to drive them around and never offered gas money. They'd tell me they'd buy me a drink next time and it never happened.
Had a friend like that. Constantly calling and asking to loan a twenty or something. When we fell on hard times he stopped calling. We're better now but haven't told him
I’ve told my wife who’s family has money problems that I absolutely refuse to give them money. I will donate my time. I’ll help the clear out their storage unit they haven’t been in for years. I’ll help them sell the three broken down cars they have. I’ll do lots of other things but I refuse to give them money.
My husband and I agreed when we married that we would never loan money to anyone. If they were in dire need we would give them what we could afford to lose. It has served us well.
My in laws seem to forget their wallets a lot when we go out with them. Even their kids have found ways to trick us. They'll say, "I've never been to Baskin Robbins." After we took them to get ice cream, we told the parents we were surprised the kids had never been to BR. The parents said that wasn't true while the kids hid from us in shame.
This is absolutely the way. I recently got a raise that puts in striking distance of some goals. To get over the top I started visiting the local plasma center.
Giving money to people who have a proven track record of mismanaging money does not fix anything. It's just pushing the inevitable a little further down the road and enabling more poor decisions.
I have a sister. I learned saying no and calmly explaining that I do not need to justify my finances for her to accept it. She occasionaly stops talking to me but sadly , I welcome those breaks..
My younger brother just asked me about a creeper that he gave me. Gave me. He can't find it and was wondering where it went. He lives with my mom, has no job and does nothing to help on the 3 acres my mom has.
Im the youngest brothers, and so many times my older brothers just Western Union me money or call and be like "hey we fixed up a new car for you, come pick it up." They're all mechanics and you'd be surprised how often ppl just give them free cars they can fix up. Never once asked for money. But, I was talking care of our mom and couldn't work bc of that. Tho its happened outside that circumstance too.
I'm the youngest as well. My brothers don't give me straight up money but they give a lot of other stuff. They bought new winter tires for us last year and one just gave me the newest Xbox (technically just on loan since it's his but he never wants anything back. I've had his Wii U and VR glasses for years now lmao) I'm disabled and unable to work so they like giving me stuff i can'tafford myself. I help with babysitting etc when I can
Man idk why, but it is absolutely wild to me that people ask their siblings for money. Parents, yeah I've done it when I was desperate and paid them back if they let me, but siblings just feels wrong
Even the one time I asked my parents for money (after I was an adult and married), I made sure to pay it back within 3 months. I don't want that shit hanging over my head.
Nobody in my family knows how much money I make. My grandmother and Aunt are the type of people who guilt-tripped my 3 cousins, who lost both their parents in a 2-year span before they were 35, into sending them $500 a month from their inheritance. All three of them bought homes with the inheritance, so the funds were used up in ~5 years. My grandmother threw a fit when they stopped being able to send her more money. She makes more than enough to live on, FYI.
going to school to be an aerospace engineer right now. Have multiple friends who think i'm going to walk out of school handed a career and become a millionare over night. No matter how much i tell them how little they actually get paid compared to similarly educated careers. I'm legit struggling right now on top of that.
Even had to explain that the concept one person could just invent some gizmo that redifines our technology/society is not only a myth/impossible its way beyond my career scope
Handed a career? Absolutely. Do a summer internship; it's paid and you may need to apply as soon as September. Keep in touch with your friends / fellow aerospace students. Starting pay for aerospace engineer must be ~$70k now? After a few years you'll be making $100k. And the aerospace guys I know with 15yr-20yr experience are making $150k-$200k. Corporate job will focus you in one single area and make you an expert, but a startup could really broaden your knowledge and experience.
The guys at Lockheed and Raytheon etc. I know in their 50s and 60s after 30+ years of experience are making like 100-150k. I wonder are you out in California? Maybe there's a west coast premium. Electric Boat is the same way out here in New England. Hard to break that 150k mark in defense unless you go and leave and join the commercial software side of things.
Yeah, I'm in Los Angeles, California. I agree that it must be a west coast premium, because 20 years ago my dad retired at $150k with 43 years experience... Then went into contracting for a decade making way more.
to be clear. Yes in the past single individuals have made ground breaking discoveries and inventions. This is no longer possible. Technology is far to advanced for that to realistically ever happen again by a single person. And the way things are going its looking like it won't even be people here doing it soon.

I never lend money to relatives, it just invites trouble.

I’ve been “unemployed” for the past couple months. Strange how the fam hasn’t called “just to catch up”

I hope you have a different and better family. If they only care to call when you have money then they don't care.

Not if you have enough to keep giving them money!
StellarJay77
If you have that much just invest it properly for them and they can spend the amounts gained on the investments.
