Basilisk (2005)

A Romeo and Juliet story told against the backdrop of two warring ninja clans. The clans are made up of unique characters with extraordinary powers and techniques. Awesome fight scenes and well developed drama make this a great series.

It was almost immediately adapted into...

Shinobi: Heart under Blade (2005)

The movie stays very true to the anime and delivers some really fun fight scenes.

Attack on Titan (2013)

This series moves effortlessly between slow, dramatic, tense, brooding scenes and some of the most dynamic, kinetic, innovative action scenes I've ever seen.

A really unique concept and a brilliant sense of mystery drive the narrative. You're left at the end of each episode with unanswered questions and a burning desire to know more.

Highly Recommended

Attack on Titan (2015)

While it takes away one of the interesting aspects of the narrative (the idea that the Asian race has been decimated and they are very rare) it does a great job of bringing the Titans and the action style to life.

Neo-Human Casshern (1973)

A classic series that everyone should watch. It's kind of a mixture between the aesthetics of Speed Racer and the narrative style and tone of Dragonball. A great watch.

Casshern (2004)

Whether or not you like this film really depends on what you're looking for. In terms of structure, plot, pace and narrative it is a confusing mess that plods along at a snails pace.

In terms of visuals however, this film is a mesmerising, frenetic spectacle. The aesthetics won't be to everyone's taste but I suggest opening up to something different in a slighty foreign visual language. It will be a unique experience guaranteed

Crying Freeman (1988 - 1994)

A really fantastic series from what I consider to be the Golden Age of anime. What makes it different for me is the real-world setting. It deals with gangsters and assassins in a very down to earth way. Absolutely awesome.

Crying Freeman (1995)

God, I love this movie. It ticks absolutely all the boxes: It borrows scenes (almost shot-for-shot sometimes) directly from the anime series, it stars Marc Dacascos at the height of his powers, the action is great and the tone is perfect.

It's one of the better anime adaptations on this list and it deserves to be much more well-known.

Guyver - Bio-Booster Armor (1989 - 1992)

This is, hands-down, my favourite anime series of all time.

A young boy stumbles upon an Alien Bio-Booster Armor suit that fuses with his body. Suddenly he finds himslef being hunted by a powerful multi-national conglomerate of shape-shifting monsters who seek to gain the suit's power.

The characters journey from normal school-children to refugee rebels, is brilliantly done. The action sequences are awesome, the animation is great and it has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Seriously watch this scene with the audio to get the full effect:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbU9rbsf-lc

The series was abruptly cancelled, so it ends on a cliff hanger which is infuriating but you can always pick up the Manga to see where the narrative goes from there.

Guyver - Dark Hero (1994)

I watched this movie before I even knew it was an adaptation of a Manga / Anime.

It's low-budget and cheesy but it has an extremely special place in my heart.

I think the creature effects are pretty fantastic. I especially love how they've brought the Guyver Armor to life. The fight scenes can be pretty satisfying in a very stilted, 90's sort of way.

To top it all off it stars the incomparable David Hayter: Voice of Solid Snake, Writer of X-men 2 and Nerd God.

Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc: Cage of Flames (2011)

There have been so many great adaptations of this Manga that it's hard to choose. This is one of the more recent ones.

I would much prefer to include a clip from Samurai X (1996 - 1998), as it was known in the States but none of them would upload to Imgur. That series is absolutely brilliant. Slow paced and atmospheric. It's pretty high on my list.

Rurouni Kenshin (2012)

This is easily the best adaptation on this list. It was given the right budget to look good and it prioritized faithfulness to the source material. It's absolutely brilliant.

Attack on titan was great....Fuck the boulder arc though

There's a live action movie of mushishi. Not sure if it's good or not

Casshern has epic visuals and soundtrack. Really hard to digest though

I wish go see some of these.

What about Death Note?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Space Battleship Yamato? True it was very condensed and felt rushed in places, but it was very entertaining.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Side note: The 2199 remake of the classic show is much better in my opinion. Not that the original isn't mind.

Attack on Titan's movie was worse than the Dragonball movie, if not just as bad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Happy to not see death note in there.

Though I don't speak japanese and the translation sucks, I really like Casshern. The visuals, killer FX and the love elements were fantastic

Just saw Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno. It was amazing. All the actors did great portraying the characters.

The live Guyver clip is the sequel - the first movie went under the name "Mutronics" (at least in the UK) and had Mark Hamill in it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The live action clip here looks exactly like an old power rangers episode

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It felt like a power rangers movie if it was darker.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Id like a JoJo anime

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit how did I miss the Crying Freeman movie!?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First one isn't an adaptation of Basilisk, both are adapations of Koga Ninpocho written in 1958.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but are those movies as good/awesome as the anime series? Because I see Attack On Titan and... yeah, movie sucked.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I liked the Guyver movies and the City Hunter adaption with Jackie Chan. They're not so close to the anime/manga but had humor and good fx.

Cool

Live action Death Note is coming to US next year. Willem Defoe is Ryuk.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fucking what?????

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guyver: Dark Hero made up a lot of my childhood.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just gonna leave an obligatory 'weeb' comment here.

Also, @OP was sugar coating his description of the AoT Live action movie. Really really thick icing. Almost makes me want to eat it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree it was absolutely NOT good but the novelty of seeing everything in Live Action often gets the better of me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"confusing mess that plods along at a snails pace" perfectly describes the casshern sins I watched lol

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ugh, that movie was terrible. I didn't care for the anime either though. Couldn't get through more than an episode or two.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I watched the 2008 anime, a friend told me it was really good... So I stuck through all of it. Wew it was boring

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Read your last description and began to applaud. Kenshin is the best live action adaptation. Thanks for not putting death note on here.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is an American version of Guyver from the 80's. It features Mark Hamill and one of the villains is Jimmy Walker. It is terrible.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The other guyver movies were terrible as well. Most live action animes are horrid

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ah, but it's wonderfully terrible. it's a perfect popcorn romp for when you want something cheesy and silly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lupin III. Best live action anime IMO

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait. They made a live action Lupin III?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh yeah, it was hilarious and fun http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862748/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dark Hero was the second Guyver movie. The first is only loosely based on the manga and no David Hayter (or Keifer)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but it does have Mark Hamill :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Max Reed!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And death note!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even my wife liked the live action Death Note

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As long as we ignore the third one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While it wasn't adapted from an anime, there is a live action Parasyte.

Rorouni Kenshin is a really good trilogy. Attack on Titan Live Action sucks so much

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Rorouni Kenshin is what got me into anime I only dabble in it but my husband is very knowledgeable and has introduced me to more!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed, the Kensin live action movies were amazing. I was sucked into the story all over again.Amazing fight scenes, too!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But the new anime is a letdown from the original

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What new Anime?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Below the other liveaction DB movies like DB: Son Goku Fight, Son Goku Win! (Korea 1990), and DB: The Magic Begins (China 1991).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Attack on Titan movie was absolutely awful.

9 years ago | Likes 108 Dislikes 0

Correct. It was shite.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed, they messed with it too much.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Wish they would just work on the next season of the anime instead of all these games/movies.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

They had to wait to make season 2 because there wasn't enough of the manga yet, it's scheduled to come out Q1 or Q2 2017 though I believe

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My point is that they released one season before they where anywhere near releasing the next. What ever the reason, its kinda sloppy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Note to self, dont criticize our lord and savior Attack on Titan.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ready for season 2 though!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Isn't season 2 supposed to be November?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I heard Feb... Don't you sell me dreams of an early season...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not trying to sell anything..! i...i just heard wrong >_>

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anyone try the ps4 game? I'm guessing it's not very good but curious

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Friend of mine has it. He said it's fun for about 10-20 min and then gets really repetitive. He's still playing it though :P

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not really worth the $50, maybe $35. It is fun though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want to play an AoT game look up Fengs Attack on Titan Tribute Game (AoTTG). It's the best AoT game out there and it's free.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'm sad it hasn't been worked on in ages, but it's really fun. It takes a decent amount of practice to develop the technique.
