This was used in WW1 Through WW2, and stopped pretty much for the reasons you said. Primarily used to confuse U-boats

Zebra stripes confuse the lion. I'm not sure how this is going to help a ship.

Disruptive camo is supposed to make it harder to spot your silhouette and judge how far away you are

This camo makes the perceived distance of the ship shift. When launching a projectile, you input the distance and, since it is off, u miss!
