I'm a high school math teacher and I teach 153 students (freshmen and juniors mostly). Here is the very plain door I have to my classroom that doesn't have my name or class schedule; it has a "P" for obvious reasons.

Here is what my "workspace" looks like from the back of the room. No fun group arrangements for my students' desks, serious business only.

A view of the back wall of my room which is worth 1 million points on Pinterest (if I did that kind of thing). The wall is painted with chalkboard paint; it's textured, so it can be hard to erase!

I put a quote each week and the class schedules in the back. This song quote is from a student; I have no idea if it's any good, but it saved me from looking something up this week.

Here's my little corner and lots of interesting stuff related to my "Classrealm". What is that you ask? I let students have their own user names and guilds (teams) that let them compete academically. I also give good citizen points to let kids who don't always get A's stay competitive. The guilds can make their own signs too that you see here.

Here are some guild signs; they are all totally appropriate for school and would no way be considered offensive (like "Ice Is").

I post class and guild rankings...

And here is the leaderboard with all 153 students I teach. They get "experience" points for assignments and "achievement" points for being good kids. These things combine to give them a level that determines their overall rank.

Sorry it's sideways, but these are pins I give to students when they reach certain levels. We have (top to bottom) bronze (level 1), silver (level 3), gold (level 6), platinum (level 10), diamond (level 15), master (level 21), and grand master (level 28). I made it so only the top tier students can reach the top tier. Currently we are half way through the year and only 2-3 students are on track to teaching grand master by the end. Yes, I paid for these!

Here is my sweet set up.

Here is a nice drawing by a student. There is hope for America.

I run a Rubiks Cube Club, but it's not very popular. Here are a few cubes I brought to display.

I also do a board game club and leave games in the room each week. We just played Terra Mystica (and I crushed them at it coincidentally). I also host anime club, but there isn't any fancy stuff on display for that. We are watching Mon Psycho 100 and Assassination Classroom at the moment.

My nice students brought me all this paper. It was for extra credit so they were all about it.

Here is my podium I chill at in the front and stare at kids when they are taking a test. I let them write on it, so it's a mess.

Here is phone jail where the cell phones go when class starts. I think my fellow educators would agree that cell phones are high in the list of things that ruin education. Seriously.

Here is my view from the front of the room.

Here is a view from the window in my room. My last school didn't have windows, so it's nice to get some natural light up in here.

Here is a view down the hall from my class. Nobody is here because I come in on my days off to prepare for the next week. Boo.

I said I had 155 kids, but only mentioned 153 students. Here are my two others; they are little princesses and I love em!

I saw the "Warhammer" part of that box game and had to double-take. Then I saw the side.

This is what we need! More teachers who care enough to get the students engaged! I had only 2/3 teachers who put this level of effort in 1/2

Holy shit the student put The Eden Project lyrics no way

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Add vinnegar to your water when erasing. Itll dissolve the chalk.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fucking love the Eden Project

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eden is good. Mostly emotional chill music.a couple great covers too.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ice is. Thats fucking clever.

As a taxpayer with 0 kids but hope for the future of our country, Godspeed.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

"I hate chalk" was the only thing I could think the whole time. This post gave me goosebumps.

65k views but only 800 upvotes. that bums me out.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Phone jail is a damn good idea. I say that as an adult. As a student I would have been silently fuming.

155 kids? Keep it in your trousers you slut

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is amazing.

#5 why doesn't 4th get a box?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am one with the 4th and the 4th with me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's my prep hour m8.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Your "top learner" thing reminds me of something one of my teachers had, I had trouble with math, the reward thing made me give up.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

Watch the Extra Credits episode from a few years back on gamification in education. There is some good science behind the idea.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why he gives the good citizen points (or however he phrased it)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You seem like a fun high school math teacher. If I had you as my math teacher maybe I would of enjoyed math class and understood it

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Tbh, I would just find this sort of approach annoying.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Same. All my math teachers were older men who followed a tedious homework-review homework-more homework-test on Friday curriculum.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was so bad at math, I couldn't get into the degree I wanted because of that grade. Wrote them a letter. Got accepted. Always try. Be brave

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man... i hate math because of the "teacher" i had senior year. What a massive try hard asshole. Oof. Goddamn i hate him.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cool teachers ROCK!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If your kids ask you for $50, beware.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be more concerned if they asked for about $3.50...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LOL!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your passion for your profession and your students really shines through in this post. Thanks for doing what you do!

9 years ago | Likes 550 Dislikes 2

^what he said @OP. also, can I/we buy you something?

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

No need, fake internet points to feed my ego are enough.

9 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

If you ever do decide you do - make a project on donorschoose.org and make a post.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have some more then

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Let some of us give you money/items so you can continue being an amazing involved teacher! You're far and few! <3

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If I had you for a math teacher when I was in HS I probably would have perfomed better in that subject.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Glad to see you using a blackboard, I feel they have become obsolete these days

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems twisted that you can favor children that can afford to bring you paper... But, that's none of my business.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

I also gave students the option to do a review packet for extra credit that same week. But I see what you mean m8.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

My thoughts exactly. Seems not only cheap on the part of the teacher...but WHOLLY unfair to the students.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

Not a fan of EC, but this is NOT cheap on the part of the teacher. Shit's expensive and we don't make enough to supply all of our own.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This isn't an issue of economics...but one of ethics.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have any idea how much American teacher's spend on school supplies? Materials like printer paper should be supplied by the school!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait what? The more I learn the more I feel America isn't a first world country for the most part.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are some truly bizarre 'facts of life' here, considering we are considered first world. Unfortunately, the fate of US public ed is sad

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i would have absolutely hated this class...i dont want a relation with the teacher or do that other shit, i wanna do my work and get out

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

The best math class I had in high school was AP Calc 2. It was self-taught, and I worked at my own pace only getting help when I needed it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

:'(

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Your last school didnt have windows? Was it in a bunker or something?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My HS was a circle with class rooms in the middle, they didn't have windows

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was a school made in the 70s so it was all bricks and no windows. :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That must have sucked :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like my current school (fellow math teacher here). I didn't realize how much windows mattered until I didn't have any. Fucking sucks.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never seen a classroom without windows. Over here it's mandatory for classrooms to have windows.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's some strange psychological torture for the teachers and the students!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Word. I graduated from a HS built in the 70s. Windows only in upper floor classrooms, and not all of them. Sucked.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you use to track the exp/guilds/etc.? I'd love to do something similar with my 150+, but it seems like a huge time commitment!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use a google spreadsheet that someone made that I purchased from teachers pay teachers. Look up "Gamification". Takes time, but is worth.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

What is the reason for the P?

9 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

its obvious

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Polinomial. Duh.

Prealgebra???

Mr. Parsons, the rubic cube solving hero.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

@op I bet I could solve one of your cubes in under 2 seconds.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

P for Math

PAIN

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It stands for "Bean Head".

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothing to do with my name I assure you.

9 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 5

I thought it was supposed to say "PI" with the window being the I. Whoops.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's written on the podium...

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

His name is podium? Odd

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That's me, Mr. Podium.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

If your first name was Podrick, that would be great.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From you're favourites i see you like pokemon and rick and morty. I appreciate what youre doing.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Walter White's old classroom?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think that joke only works in NZ

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is 'P' not an international term for meth? That could lead to embarrassing situations when travelling.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

nah, I'm pretty sure it's just NZ that calls it P.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will always upvote teachers. Too much stress for me, I only lasted 4 years as a high school math teacher. Keep it up!!!

9 years ago | Likes 250 Dislikes 3

Working on my masters now so I can teach high school math, I'm looking forward to it!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First year teacher here. I've never been happier and know I'm where I should be. I hope I stay this way!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I thought about being a history teacher for a while, but couldn't bare the shame of being a non-STEM graduate in my old clique.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Mr. McQueenie dat u?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Quality post. Quality teacher.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Better than me. I lasted 2 as a middle school and high school science teacher

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I lasted 2 months as a middle school P.E teacher.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What happened? I'm looking into doing high school pe

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I taught middle school for a few years. It's nice to talk to kids that get my self depressing jokes and memes. MS kids have no clue.

9 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 3

Middle school math teacher here. I just tell them to laugh, and enjoy the fake laughter ????

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

lol I'm in grad school and a professor recently said: "laugh or don't laugh, I'm amusing myself up here and that's what's really important"

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

"I'm hilarious, if you don't laugh that's your problem"

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"Only lasted 4 years"... I'm 4 months in to teaching and would be thrilled to last another 44. Kudos.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

What's been so bad about teaching? I ask as a fellow first year teacher.

Depends where you're at. My previous district served some pretty difficult children. The current one has difficult parents. ;)

I'm at a title one school. We have difficult kids, but a ridiculously supportive staff as well. It helps!

The parents killed my career. I miss the kids
