The many owls in my life - excuse the potatoes

Becky the Bengalese Eagle Owl

The owls all have crappy names because the husband thought it would be funny to name them after our neighbours. She is mantling because she does not like the camera. By making herself as big as possible, she hopes to scare me away. Even though the stand about half a meter tall there is no chance she is gonna get bigger than me, yet she tries anyway.

Archie - my baby

Archie was the only one with an awesome name because I got to name him. Archie is short for Archimedes of course. He was my baby and it destroyed me when he died. But as you can see from this photo, his legs never held him upright. He would walk with his wings and shuffle after you. But he could move fast, tried to join us in the bath once. He only lived for a few months :(

Alfie

This is Alfie. He had some serious personality. Unlike the others (whose personality is mostly comprised of evil with a dash of dim) Alfie loved to play with my dog and they had a morning routine of trying to scare each other. In this photo it was very hot, so he is spreading out his wings to cool himself.

Cobby

This is cobby the owl. So named because it suited her angry disposition. The egg in this photo is Archie (Alfie is the dad)! She actually trod on him a bit because she rejected them all for being imperfect. Or she was hungry. She ate the rest of the chicks. Husband was overfeeding them at this point trying to prevent it but she seemed to prefer the taste of her young. This one is a piece of work. Never try and get close when she is brooding.

Becky (again) and Gary (seriously - who calls an owl Gary?)

These are also Cobby's offspring. This was taken about 8ish years ago. Look how small and cute they are. They were parent reared as opposed to Archie which makes them generally wilder and harder to work with - but not impossible. There is one more owl who I dont seem to have a photo of, Buddy. She was bought for Gary to mate with but she simultaneously rejected him (he did not have an easy life for a few years) and then promptly developed a tumour and died :(
Alfie is also deceased now (simply old age - he was about 30 years old) and Cobby is past making viable eggs. Doesnt stop her laying and brooding though.
So in summary, Archie, Alfie, and Buddy died. Remaining are Gary, Becky, and Cobby (who simply wont die because she is fuelled by hate and spite).

Good owl. Good owl. Good owl. Owl. Good owls.

So am I. Thank you, though. I bought Little stone owls for each of them and placed them in the garden to remember them by.

That is a very sweet way to remember them.

I know sometimes mother cats will eat their young if they are in distress . Are these disabled owls ? How come they are in captivity?

Not native to this country. Actually rescued from someone who was not so keen on keeping them alive. We have fixed the pens now and 1/2

Glad to hear it. Now I understand why they are in captivity. But as you know birds just want to fly.Sad that they can't understand why. 1)

But good on you for taking them in and doing the best you can for them. But I guess they shouldn't be mating and creating more babies 2)
