So a little bit of context, at the turn of the millennia (yes, I am that old) I was in clans at the top of the clanbase* ladders (EU and UK) for MoH:AA and CoD. We'd all invest about 30 hours a week including training and tactics, and that's before you add in the actual clan matches.
What did we get from that? Nothing but a bit of smugness. Now? I could be set up to push for money that could set me up for life. Bah... * shakes fist in air *
(* clanbase, for those unsure, was essentially the only serious gaming ladder; covered hundreds of games and had leagues based both nationally and internationally)

@OP, try the Silver Snipers some time. They are an Swedish Esports team!

I'll be honest, 2 decades later, I don't have the exuberance of youth nor the masses of free time available to get up to a decent standard.

Aren’t they the OAP’s?
MrKickkiller
Yup they are :)

No, mostly because the fans of esports are ruining a lot of gaming / think they're super duper awesome because they watch streams.

Heh, the community was toxic then! Just that the spotlight was not on it then, but neither was the money there. I missed the boat.. :(
thehumanoidsarecoming
No, even the most toxic people back then were far more manageable if you could 'demonstrate' you knew what you were doing match-to-match.
YouMealyMouthedCrotchPheasant
Maybe it was because we were successful we ended up with a lot more shenanigans, it was quite toxic at times. I'm sure we'll both agree.. /2

2/ ..there are two categories; players and admins, and fans. 'back in the day' there were much less fans. That's different now.
thehumanoidsarecoming
There were two categories of players. Now games have to develop idiot traps to cater to the obnoxious set that think theyre 'elite'
