Keeping it brockmire

that did not make me smile too. he might be voices but jokes are not his strength

Still not a good enough reason to use the word "penetrate"

I really like Hank but my favourite of all his voices is this one...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4LkkLpRjH8

What a terrible job. You stand still, you can't move, you do nothing, you can't even smile, which trains your emotions to be suppressed.

I still think he and Phoebe should've ended together.

Now do Apu!

And then Abraham from Year One and say he's going to cut your penises. ha

He needed to do Agador

I will forever maintain that this movie is underrated as hell. (Mystery Men, 1999)

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Fun movie, amazing cast, and I would say roughly 10-15 years ahead of its time.

I think Agador Spartacus would have INSTANTLY gotten a reaction.

If you make the guard smile .... he'd have to kill you.

On a school trip to London when I was about 12, I had prepared a list of my dirtiest jokes in an attempt to make one of them laugh. They had to keep marching off to avoid the punchline - I definitely got a few of them to crack though

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Promise?

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i'd turn into quite the comedian if that were true

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hit him with the ol' Agador Spartacus

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly, he only understands British.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need to study the pro. Go watch Tim Conway make the other actors COMPLETELY lose it on the Carol Burnett Show,

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There actually is a limit to how much fuckery they will tolerate. It's pretty high but not insurmountable.

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I do recall seeing a video of someone going too far and getting thrown on the ground.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They will generally tolerate all verbal abuse, but if anyone touches a guard, or their horse if they have one, there will be physical repercussions.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ultimately, they are active solders on guard duty. While it generally falls to the police to deal with domestic affairs, they won't be tolerating any situation that could ultimately hinder their ability to carry out their duties.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well he might be a fan but their job comes first.

"So what do you do for a living?"
"I pout."

The guard. Lost all emotions. Here we see a Voice actor trying his best to make him express those emotions.

An BTW, the story that is told about the filming of this scene is most likely not true.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The one about the actors playing the guards being told they couldn’t laugh etc? That makes me a bit sad, but that actors laugh is completely genuine, no matter the background :)

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...he didn't break his toe?

5 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Isn't this kinda rude given the setting and context?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They expect this. You can see a podium on the right briefly, I think it has listed the rules of engagement, don't get close, etc. For rule followers, they do welcome the challenge, Looks like Hank is keeping a good distance and not excessive volume, it's exactly what they're trained to ignore. They're famous for not cracking for a reason.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair enough. TIL

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh my god, it's the Blue Raja!

5 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Seems to me that Hank is simply confirming the ugly american stereotype.

5 months ago | Likes 251 Dislikes 54

I highly doubt only Americans try to get the guards to react, and I'm sure this would be a preferred instance. If anything the guard is probably sad he can't ask for an autograph.

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Because he's doing some funny voices? He isn't bothering that guard. Dude is probably enjoying it under that serious face he's maintaining.

5 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Whilst I wasnt in any of the guards regiments my regiment has occasionally participated in state events and as a major i would be very proud of that lads discipline if he were one of mine.

This is exactly the kind of test to ones self control that separates the British army from the rest of the world.a

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

No, because Hank actually gave up doing Apu. The stereotypical American would've squawked about "Muh freedom of speech" and doubled down on offensive, racist tropes.

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I'm Indian-descended. I miss Apu.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah me too. I don't think Hank Azaria was racist. But I respect him being aware and stepping away from the voice.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's not up in the guard's face, but keeps a respectful distance. That's alright by me.

5 months ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

he doesnt look ugly to me. perfectly normal looking guy

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

A perfectly cromulent guy.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nah. The guard here has two functions. One is the role of, well, guarding. The other is the projection of perpetually stern demeanor. These two things are utterly unrelated. So long as the tourist (or even native--I've seen Brits mess with the guards as well) does nothing that would disrupt the first function (touching, blockading, getting into their personal space), then all this sort of thing does is highlight the guard's ironclad control.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh, they're just cops anyway

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

In the states they are trying to use military as cops, not in the UK.....yet

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those are cops my dude, they guard the richest family in the land, they get violent if you touch them or break their rules, they're put out for intimidation under the guise of patriotism.... Yeah, those are cops and all cops are bastards.

That or proof no one under 35 knows what The Simpsons is. I’m 57 and Simpsons references fall flat all the time now.

5 months ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 6

There isn't a person above 20 that doesn't know what The Simpsons is :p

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The younguns know Simpsons from memes. Anythinng outside of that is lost

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I heard an under-25 reference the Homer-gets-fat-to-work-from-home episode last month, but yeah, it's getting rare.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am not yet 35 neighborino and I love the Simpsons

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Well Fox did that to themselves by refusing to make the show accessible outside of buying the series or paying a special service to watch the show’s earlier seasons. It’s unfortunate that their greed has made them poorer.

On one hand, yeah don't fuck with the guards. On the other hand this is probably among the most pleasant, inoffensive ways of fucking with a guard that they'll ever get to experience. Ain't getting in his face and trying to get a picture, isn't touching him, getting in the way, etc.

5 months ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 3

Yes he kept his distance

5 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Isn't that the point of these guards though? To show how well disciplined they are when being fucked with? Ain't no way that dude is running with that stupid hat to catch a criminal if there's an actual emergency

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The rifle is real

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're ceremonial, but very real, royal guards and the rifles aren't toys. They're not there to catch criminals they're there for if someone tries to get somewhere they shouldn't be. And they will, and have, fuck someone's day up if they decide to be an idiot.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

^ This. He's not interferring with the guard. He's not standing in the way, obstructing anything, tryingto climb over him or anything. Respectful distance and completely harmless. If anything, end of shift the guard got a chuckle out of that.

5 months ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Most importantly he gave it a go and had the sense and dignity to stop rather than continue once it was clear the guard wasn't going to crack. So, yeah. Ideally you really shouldn't bug the guards, but I'll admit "voice actor teases me a little from a reasonable, safe distance" is about as harmless as it gets and, yeah, he probably had a lil' laugh later.

5 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Also, a good story of said famous voice actor trying to. Break his discipline

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously, how many Royal Guards can say they got lightly accosted by Moe from the Simpsons?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Excellent but the guard is not for show, veterans of foreign wars...

5 months ago | Likes 156 Dislikes 18

Could have been hired to test the guards. Who knows what these days.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

I mean…they kinda are, tho?

That’s not to say they are not HIGHLY trained, or that being chosen is not an incredible honor. They are cream-of-the-crop soldiers. But they are merely the tip of a much larger security iceberg and meant to be closest to the public for photo-ops and as a symbol of tradition, etc.

They CAN kick your ass if you do anything stupid (physically & legally), but they really are there primarily for show (in a literal tourist sense & as a symbol of deeper security sense).

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If he's not for show, why the costume?

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

*have them wear the most ridiculous impractical helmets* THIS IS NOT FOR SHOW!

5 months ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 5

But there are well bred English rats under those funny hats

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This.

These guards aren't there for fun. They're trained infantry who happen to wear fancy clothes.

5 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 6

They aren’t guarding anything. It’s all show.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Maybe they should relax

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

veterans of foreign wars? That guard looks like he's about 17 years old

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Not the person you responded to, but to my recollection the assignment there generally rotates between a handful of UK combat units, between their tours.

Not sure if it's restricted to a specific veterancy level or rank whatever, but presumably they ar _usually_ composed of veterans.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

All of the palace guard are from active infantry units who can and do deploy. This lad looks too young for Iraq and Afghanistan though. But yeah, they’re all fully trained infantry which is why he wasn’t laughing. He probably had a good laugh 20 minutes later when he finally figured out what was going on ;)

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This particular part of the grounds is absolutely for show. They encourage tourists to come in here. There's a big gate they can close when they don't want tourists there.

5 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

If you step out of line there, you'll find out right quick how much show it is.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

That is show as well. l

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When the UK cops armed with rifles suddenly appear and shirtfront an influencer who keeps yelping "really bro? Seriously bro? For tickling a guard bro?" as he's cuffed and led away... that's my favourite part of the show!

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact this also happens in any show. You normally don't run onto the stage ya'know?

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

not the psychic wars?

5 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

At least a thousand of them.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I never thought I would see a reference like this in the wild

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am part of teh Angry Mob

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is absolutely for show though, otherwise they'd just soldiers and plainclothes officers (which I'm sure they do also). it's not show in the Disneyland sense, more in the projecting power/tradition/legitimacy sense, but still, it's for show and having a bit of fun at a respectful distance seems fine.

5 months ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 9

Probably the only thing you can’t do is touch or threaten the guards. Literally everyone tries to take pictures with them. If the government had a problem with speaking to them or trying to make them laugh, they’d enforce against that. They don’t.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are still very real guards with very real training and weapons. But there’s also a lot of tradition/ceremony that comes with the position.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they're more referring to the fact people treat them as a joke and don't realize those are actual armaments they have with orders to use it when necessary.

5 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

To some degree, but it’s not like they don’t court that by promoting how stoic and unbeatable the guards are, and then allowing the public to get as close to them as they do. At least here he is maintaining a decently respectful distance and just trying to get a genuine, good-natured smile out of him and not truly taunting him or doing a lot of the shit other tourist morons do.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lol. "The guard is not for show" Meanwhile, said guard is wearing a BRIGHT RED COAT and a 3ft tall hat...

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

The hat is tactical snack storage!!

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Wut, beans on toast and toasted plant-flavored water?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The distance is fine, treating them as a theme park attraction is not. That kind of thing is a big contributor to the poor reputation of American tourists.

5 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

You can’t have fun in the UK guys, that’s why they don’t season their food there and it’s always raining.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

You really feel entitled to use people doing their job as if they're your personal toys, huh?

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2
