Ura, known for his often acrobatic style of sumo and usage of rare techniques pulled off a move called a "tsutaezori". This is apparently only the 6th time it's been used. A technique used in only 0.02% of wins, and Ura is like half of those. Such a great sport that I've learned so much about over the years.

Got to see some sumo wrestlers live at an event in St Louis. Behemoths. Super nice guys too, but apparently there’s a lot of bad energy in the sumo circles (according to the one champion? that was speaking/presenting)

Sumo is the only sport I ever enjoyed watching. While many matches are quick and (in my opinion) forgettable, there are always some in between that are so impressive. For example when Tochinoshin lifted Ichinojo (about 200 kg) and carried him one or two steps out of the ring.

Thanks!

https://www.twitch.tv/midnightsumo is a great channel to watch. Highly recommend.
arumunus
Holy shit man's gams are fucking BUILT.
Kodama666
I recommend the Grand Sumo Highlights on NHK World (also available as an app)…they cover the top division bouts of the 6 basho (sumo tournaments) live and supply a cut highlights program. Kyushu Basho was a blast this year. It ended yesterday and at least some of the highlights should still be online.
VodkaReindeer
did you know there is also sumo for women
monkeyfly
Heckin' chonk.
Canigetbannedagain2
Sumos are a hell of a lot stronger than you think, that's some amazing foot work on both of them.
TsubakiTragic
Give yourself a treat. Watch a couple of youtube Sumo vids but instead of watching the contestants, focus instead on the audience behind them, especially the petite mothers and grandmothers. The body language and reactions from these ladies is priceless.
morrighan42
I have a group of friends that watch the Grand Sumo highlights together, we frequently have to go back to watch the actual match because we were watching the audience. We have nicknames for like 60 different regulars and if I manage to ever made it to a match I may try to get photos with some of them.
UprootedGrunt
This is one of the longest sumo bouts I think I've ever seen. I always like watching, but never seek it out. Their handfighting is always impressive.
vindik8or
Ura is my favourite. He has winning techniques to his name that only he has performed. No other rikishi can claim that.
BishlamekGurpgork
6th time it's been used ... in modern sumo? Or are the records of sumo's origins complete enough that we know it's the 6th time it's ever been used in competition sumo?

That referee outfit is amazing.
Delathi
Yeah, but he used it against Takayasu so it's not as cool, because I like Takayasu.
SalmySwims
Papayasu!
GeebesofMinnesota
Just found sumo on youtube this year by chance. I find it quite enjoyable to watch.
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
It really is a fantastic sport. One that is so incredibly simplistic yet complicated. Personally, I wish two things would happen. 1) Better medical care, including at least 1 emergency physician, a specialist, and an EMT crew with a medical/tool cart. And 2) I wish they'd modernize a little bit more. Nothing crazy, just something to make each participant stand out a bit more. Something that gives the fans a little deeper, more personal bond with their favorite wrestlers.
Useroffline
It’s a shame a lot of it is rigged. :(
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
Not nearly as much as it used to be. Though, I'm sure there are still gentlemen agreements being made between wrestlers. But far less, if any rigged matches due to gambling.
Moominator
This is a sport I wish I knew more about. I love it when YouTube randomly shows me a video of sumo wrestling history.
morrighan42
NHK World is free on roku and has an excellent highlights show. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/

Ura is absolutely my favorite rikishi, I really hope he doesn't get demoted. I get that he likes to give a show but he should consider being a little boring if it means winning.
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
I noticed a big change in his sumo this most recent Basho, more often than not, he's been thrusting forward more than usual and keeping up the pressure. He still comes in low, but he's been taking advantage of his ability to get in and under and has been following it up with a more sustained thurst instead of letting off the pressure. It's a small step, but I see his sumo improving bit by bit.
Porfirij
amazing stuff, and against a very good opponent (komusubi takayasu) too. ura is such an exciting and skillful rikishi. not surprised he is a fan favourite.
hyptosis
Damn they look stout, and the slapping looks so hard too
Porfirij
yes, takayasu is a physical specimen, and an oshi sumo (thrusting and "slapping") expert, his tsuppari (open hand strikes) are amongst the hardest and best in the top division.
KainWhisper
I could do that if I wanted to. :Rubs cheeto dust on his shirt:
IMakeLotsOfReferencesAndRemakes
I mean this is legitimately how I am built but only having one leg to stand on I definitely could not do this. I will just take that I have a classic sumo style body though.
baconandmorebacon
I already have the belly, how hard can it be to also get the necessary strength, agility and skill? Anyway, I have to go offline now, I'm tired from typing all this.
jesuisgur
You have ti gain the weight before you start fighting, right?
ArthurT
You train while gaining the weight, and the you must keep the weight on. Make no mistake, that weight is covering a lot of strength and agility.
AlwaysUpvotesCatgirls
Oh yeah. He did that in the September Basho. I’ve definitely become a fan of his since I started watching last year.
eetsumkaus
I feel like western sumo fandom has blown up since the pandemic. I wonder what the reason is. The only time I watched sumo was when I was quarantining for two weeks after moving to Japan in 2021 and NHK was just about the only thing I could put on.
AlwaysUpvotesCatgirls
I’ve always been an irregular fan, but I never really had anyone to watch it with. Found out my roomie is into it and we’ve been hooked since.
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
It's hard not to like Ura. Every time he throws his one little rice bean onto the dohyō it cracks me up. Unlike Terustuyoshi who threw massive handfuls every time.
Porfirij
what they throw is salt, not rice. kotozakura always throws a lot, probably the most amongst the current makuuchi roster...
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
Ope' my bad, I knew it was salt, not sure why I said rice!? It's not a wedding! Lol. Just a good Ole basic brain fart.
AlwaysUpvotesCatgirls
Ah…..Double Boob as he’s affectionately known in my house. XD
GravyEducation
Wait so he got beat because he was out or cuz he got thrown to the ground at the end? Please explain like I've never actually watched sumo because aside from fictional matches I don't think I have
SalmySwims
If you're interested, check out MidnightSumo on Twitch. The November Basho just ended, but Middy does reruns on the weekends and chat is actually helpful
BranDohCalrissian
I believe if you fall or get thrown out of the ring you're out
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
Sumo rules are pretty simple. You do everything you can, other than a closed fisted punch, to get ANY part of your opponents body, other than the soles of his feet, to touch the ground or by pushing them out of the ring. So if you trip and your toes even scrap across the ring, you lose. Ura, the pink guy, basically dipped under and did a reverse slam causing the other guy to touch the ground first.
Myoron
Ah, thanks. That explains a lot of the footwork that seemed odd.
vindik8or
There's a few more things than that you can't do. The one that comes up the most often is grabbing hair. You also cannot slap both ears at the same time, grab your opponent's genitals or the mawashi section covering them, jab the eyes or solar plexus, grab the throat (though you can push or strike it), kicking the chest or waist, or bending fingers back.
GravyEducation
Ooh I see it now. He pulled the guy and fell on top of him so that his opponent hit first. Nice
YeastInfectedWhiskerBiscuit
Bingo! Sumo is pretty brutal. It's simple in concept, but there are 82 winning moves in sumo. Like, how can there be 82!? You're just tryin' to get the other guy out of the ring or make him touch the ground!. But if you google the Kimarite List you'll find a page naming them all off and how they're done. I know of at least one guy who's died in pro sumo after breaking his neck. If you wanna see some real brutality look up videos on "Hakuhō Shō" He's the greatest of all time.
TsubakiTragic
Hakuhō is/was brilliant. His last match was one for the ages.
TsubakiTragic
Best sumo ever.
