Riding on the coat tails (or is that tales) of Star Wars, Disney decided to dip a toe into the world of live action Sci-Fi and in 1979 bought us "The Black Hole".
The premise is simple, the crew of the rather industrious survey ship "Palomino" find a black hole but more to the point a lost ship in stationary orbit around said hole.
The ship the "Cygnus" was thought lost with all hands years before.
The cast for the film were by in large fairly big ticket names, Robert Forster. Ernest Borgnine, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Perkins, Roddy McDowall and of course the excellent Maximillian Schell.
Vincent was the crew's robot companion who served up a beautiful degree of sarcastic humour to the crew, including such delights as:
Lt. Charles Pizer: We'd be better off without you and Maximilian trying to knock heads.
V.I.N.CENT: I can handle that thing.
Lt. Charles Pizer: Well, far be it from you to admit there isn't anything you can't handle.
V.I.N.CENT: There are three basic types, Mr. Pizer: the Wills, the Won'ts, and the Can'ts. The Wills accomplish everything, the Won'ts oppose everything, and the Can'ts won't try anything.
Capt. Dan Holland: Well, do us all a favor, V.I.N.CENT, and try to be a Can't, especially where that monster is concerned. We need you, not another corkscrew.
Some of the larger set pieces were breathtaking and the film had a huge feeling of scale and power to it.
Ahhh Dr Hans Heinhardt, hot wishing to spoil everything, the "bad guy" but a propper old school gentleman bad guy......with a huge ship......and robot guards.
He has a dream to go where no-one has ever gone before, into......you guessed it.
The black hole.
Lots of things happen. Some of the effects are a little (cough) shonky by today's standards but it's the feel of the film that makes it great, a real sense of adventure.
Robot people in arcade style deathmatch.
And of course there is Reinhardt's companion, protector and I don't want to know what else "Maximillian"
Ever present as the silent killer, it says nothing yet exudes a tremendous feeling of hate and venom.
There are of course twists.
And badly made costumes.
The other robot is Bob, who is Vincent's cousin (well similar model) onboard the Cygnus, who Maximillian and the guards have beaten to near destruction.
The effect of the damage was caused by the director hitting the clay model with a baseball bat. Slim Pickens (yes the bomb guy) did the voice.
I made this as I was playing Ark the other day and mentioned it and no-one had heard of it apart from one guy who's response was "I remember that film it was awesome".
Anyway, give it a try it's a proper good romp.

I remember when this movie came out. I absolutely loved it. Saw it over and over again.
trailhounds5772
I remember that film. Got to see it with my uncle who was, at the time, working on the Shuttle program. Film was amazing, and so is he!
CousinDirk
I read and reread the novelisation growing up. I’ve owned the DVD for some years now but for whatever reason have never sat down to watch it
BerwynBrewyn
I saw that shit in the theater when I was a kid. My favorite movie for a long time. It went well with my Battlestar Galactica obsession.
demergivore
The soundtrack is great too
Dracongield
I still name my robot companions in games Vincent
mizmoose
I love this movie. How can you not love a science fiction movie with a mystery, robots, and an overture???
ScOttRa
LOVE this movie. I used to spend hours drawing BOB and VINCENT. I’ve always felt this is an vastly underrated gem.
scubavampire
upvoting for your enthusiasm
badyeti
Very gracious of you dear chap.
Greymal
Cried after watching it the first time as a kid... can never bring myself to watch it a second (and I'm 45 now)
TheFastpaws
It never say well with me as a kid but then my dad loved B horror and scarred me for life on anything like it.

Ooooh purdy
Niagaran
The only merchandised bed sheets I've ever owned was for this movie.
GregorMadnill
Funny how this is Disney's competetive effort towards Star Wars and now...
ManMashine
this is also why we didn't get the promised Remake which Joseph Kosinski was supposed to direct. Because Disney bought Star Wars…
evilspyre
I had a Maximillian toy when I was a kid, don't remember if I had a Vincent one.
sheepshark
I used to have that book/record from the last pic.
Oualawouzou
Only saw 20 seconds of it, in a compilation of Disney villains like 30 years ago. Featured a propeller like thing to the guts. Shocked kid.
Korbendallas71
Brilliantly weird dark and unsettling. I hope they do a remake so they remake and release some new/old toys
LaughingInTheFaceOfDanger
I'm sensing remake with the latest pictures of a real one...
jessenator
It had some of the best and worst matte & miniature work of the era...
jarable
The Cygnus model kit is highly collectible these days.
leodavinci1
The actually developed some technical innovations for the effects.

Because Dykstra wouldn't let them use his motion control system, Disney said, "Well we'll make our own camera with black holes and robots!"
rocc7
I had bed sheets of this movie when I was a kid.
willis911rn
Lucky!!!!
Raxiel
I had a second hand 'red man' posable action figure, didn't find out who he was until years later
henryv1598
It was Disney’s first PG. that was a HUGE deal at the time.
km9v
It's the equivalent of Deapool getting an R rating.

I only remember the robot's death blades... and being terrified...
MisterYukon
Me too! I was 8
badyeti
Aye, I'd forgotten about that.
Billis75
I heard this was just another hard sci fi script in the 70's like Outland, Soylent Green, but then Disney attached to it with minor changes
leodavinci1
It's basically 20,00 Leagues Under the Sea in space drag... minus the character nobility of Nemo.
CotterPyke
i remember actually theater viewing this, and forgetting every single detail - if it comes on i'll watch it again because, what the hell

SomeGrayFox
So this is where my fear of propellers comes from... good to know.
xizar
Maximilian terrified me as a kid, especially with that scene at the end where he seems to absorb Reinhart.
bruntrhymeswith
Hell! Me too! I mean incredible, but scary af.
AvatarTommyBee
I thought the film mediocre, but that end was good .. good enough to remember.
leodavinci1
Black Hole is a weird combo of 20,000 Leagues with the Night on Bald Mountain/Ava Maria sequences from Fantasia.
ThePastmaster
I thought I had heard of everything Disney ever made. Where the fuck has this been hiding?
badyeti
So few people have heard of it.
Nosspott
Of all the movies getting remade by Disney lately, this is the one that I think could really make it work if they tried.
badyeti
Except they would ruin it by trying to fill it with political messages.
TheFastpaws
Ya it is getting old having so many movies do this instead of just being movies. LOOKING AT YOU THE LAST JEDI!
leodavinci1
Yep... just get rid of 1) plot holes you could drive a train thru, 2) silly, impractically designed robots and humor designed to appeal 1
leodavinci1
to kids, and 3) and an ambiguous ending (with all ambiguity of a hell fire and brimstone church sermon) that leaves you 2
leodavinci1
with a what-happed-to-the-good-guys-? WTF moment. 3
WARHAMMER405
The theme song to The Black Hole is excellent.
TaviRider
And the sound effects too. Future Sound of London sampled various effects for a couple of its albums.
ManMashine
John Barry's Ouverture was and still is outstanding. The movie's soundtrack was also one of the earliest digital recordings too.
1moreStep2Go
And because of that wasn't even considered for an award, they "cheated"
ManMashine
haha nah that was "TRON" and it's use of "a computer" for the visual effects. Even thou a lot were photo-chemical & optical effects. ;)
DrInkDrinker
Why is this movie getting so much love recently? Are they giving money out to shill media to gauge popularity for a reboot or something?
KidneyBeene
yup
badyeti
I didn't know it was. I just watched it the other night after about 30 years and thought, that was cool, do a post.
3nd3rwiggin
Well, an image of a Black Hole was recently released, sure that has reminded people about a movie dealing with the same type of object.
Sm9yCg
Disney's plan for world domination is climaxing and a real black hole has been pictured for the very first time recently.
QuotablePoots
Disney doesn't acknowledge this movie very much. Hype comes from those who've seen it.
jasta6
I've been hearing a remake has been planned for a while now, but last time I heard anything about it was a couple years ago.
WildWeasel76
Its referenced in the beginning of TRON Legacy - I was hoping that was a hint.
vibur
Disney+ on the horizon and black holes have been in the news lately.
mizmoose
I keep saying "if they ever send a ship to that black hole they should not name the ship Cygnus" and nobody gets it... :/
