Final products in our living room.

Side view of the tables and complimentary coasters.

This is how I started. My wife found this Ana White post and I modified it to what we wanted: http://www.ana-white.com/2013/09/rustic-x-coffee-table

Starting the cuts. I got the tops from a local lumber mill that is going out of business. It's a mix of different lengths, widths and thickness. The wood is Sapele (I am still working to confirm this) and the base is made of 2x4's from old projects/a trashed bed.

Total cost was about $100. I had a decent amount of scrap wood I used and got the tops for 10% of what I could find online for complimentary material. I ended up buying a lot of wood from the mill and go back pretty often as it's so cheap.

Coffee Table:
Length 45"
Width: 28"
Height: 18"

End Tables
Length: 20"
Width: 20"
Height: 24"

Bases are 2x4's I ripped down to 3 1/4" for better edges and secured with pocket holes and glue.

I cut the tops to an inch over length, jointed one edge and then riped to a clean width. Overall, the outter pieces are 10" and the center is 8".

Clean edges ready for glue.

Glued up the best I could. I made a major mistake not running these through a planer first. Overall ,I think I spent 6 hours hand planing and belt sanding these flat.

Glued up and realizing my mistake. At this point I sharpened my hand planer and got to work.

First day of planing. I got it pretty flat, but there were still a lot of low spots and work to be done.

Pretty cleaned up. A lot of sweat, some blood, and if I'm being honest, tears :(

While the glue dried, I cut the legs and aprons to length and then jointed/ripped them to 3 1/4"

Drilling some pocket holes.

Put the base together wrong... fixed shortly after I realized that.

Put together correctly.

End table pieces cleaned up to 3 1/4"

Checking the sizes. For the bases, I used 3/4" plywood I had from various projects. It's secured with 3/4" pocket holes drilled through the plywood into the base.

Why not make some new coasters? http://imgur.com/a/GwQ2c

Two sides of coasters

The 4" x 4" chunk that I took down to 3.5" x 3.5"

Coasters drying

This is a shot of jointing the edges flat. I tried to remove as little as possible.

Matched the wood the best I could. The various thickness made it difficult, but these were a lot easier than the coffee table top.

One cleaned up. More sweat, but no tears or blood.

Working away.

Testing some finish and stain. In the end I used Min Wax polyurethane oil based. Each top got 4 coats and dried for 72 hours.

Skipped a few pictures, but I used a framing square to square off the tops. I then routered a 1/2" round over. Between here and a few pictures I made some putty out of dust from the belt sander and glue to fill in any gaps/cracks/gouges.

Applying the finish - no stain used.

First coat done. I used satin as it was recommended.

The sides. Once these dried I just used 4 screws on each table to secure the tops through the base. The bases I sanded and painted with an off white satin.

Thanks for looking!

No worries - I love checking out builds like that. What kind of white did you use? Is it a bright white or is there a hint of cream?

It's a satin off white from lowes. Little bit of grey in it. The color is called snowbound.
