my face and head hurt so bad so I went to see doctors. they said you have shingles...and its probably because of your recent cancer treatment. they seem to have attacked all the places you recently had radiation. apparently cancer treatment increases your chances of getting shingles by 40%. this was day one.

these are the gigantic pills you have to take to lessen the shingles in your system (don't know why pic is so small, sorry phone app users)

this was day 2. I have a tumor in this eye and used radiation to battle it just a few months ago. shingles=very painful, do not recommend. please opt out!

day 4. look I can open my eye!!!! it really is the small things

someone blessed me with this wonderful aloe plant and a friend came over every day for a month and loaded my blisters up with it. made a huge difference and helped a lot. that and ice packs!!!
my two dogs for tax purposes, of course

Godspeed! Wishing you well and kick the cancer in its nuts.

We seem of similar age. I had shingles on the left side of my face back in February/March. So painful. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.

At dinner with Grandma and she says, "I had Herpes once, it was all over my back, it was so painful." "Wait, that was SHINGLES, Grandma!"

Being immunocompromised from cancer treatment leaves you vulnerable to flare-ups from things like shingles. Sucks.

You have a lovely smile @op Hope you feel better soon.

I had (no cancer related) shingles at 39. It sucked. See an acupuncturist. They will make you feel so much better. And in days not weeks.

*Hugs* You're a badass, hon. Keep kicking its ass. All of it--the cancer, the shingles, all of it. :)

The TLDR is that cancer treatment blaps your immune system hard, which allows latent chickenpox in neurons to reactivate

I’m going through radiotherapy and nobody told me this could happen. Hope you feel much better really soon. Xx

@mooselover002 Same thing happened to my wife, one year after her treatments ended.. the break out was in the radiation zone.

I've had shingles. It fucking sucks. Stay strong op.

Valtrex may be extremely helpful here. I tend to get shingles from working long hours, without sleep and poor hydration. Valtrex stops it

Mine tends to peak at seasonal transitions...especially summer to fall...where I live it may be due to ragweed allergies

Shingles is a latent infection that flares up when you’re stressed or you’re immune system is weak.

So rather just an unhappy coincidence its unfortunately pretty common in those sorts of situations.

A pox on cancer! I hope you heal quickly.

What kind of treatment do they have you on? Anything besides targeted radiation? Sorry if this is too personal - just curious.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i did gamma knife and intensified modulated radiation. waiting results as these take time to kill the tumors

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ugh, the waiting is the hardest part. I have a PET scan tomorrow to see if we got mine. You’re a badass - keep the faith!
