As an American, do your thing. Make it hurt. The MAGAts think he'll win. The "both sides are the same" voters think, well who knows. The only way they'll get it is if they feel the pain directly. Just like the Trump voters that are shocked their friends and relatives got deported.

Robin Williams once described Canada as a very nice penthouse one floor above a meth lab.

Trump is an idiot. I work in manufacturing and am bracing for “supply chain shortages” like the last time he did this nonsense. Really sucks

In Canada, our first move was that all provinces will be enacting a 25% tariff on U.S. goods. And several of our provinces have stated that on Tuesday, all American alcohol will be removed from liquor stores. Additionally, there has been consideration that we cut off all power and water utilities supplied to the U.S. Effectively increasing how much power/water utilities will cost across the U.S.

Remember how big a deal it was when the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA] was passed? It was a huge boon.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Helped all three countries reach new levels of prosperity (although I expect bad for smaller local providers and manufacturers I'd imagine)

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Politically, NAFTA's a big piece of what led us down this road. I'm dog tired of representatives of the Clinton-to-Romney consensus liberalsplaining how the rising tide raises all boats and just you wait, it'll trickle down eventually and wait, no, stop, why are you voting for Trump for twelve years straight and how did the Hitlergruß come back into vogue?

There's valid critiques of NAFTA from both the left and the right. Doesn't leave voters many options in the absence of a left-wing party.

As a side node... does Canada have nukes ?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Our navy used to have 5 yellow submarines, and we kept them inside a mall...

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, but it wouldn't take long for them to get them if threatened. Not just nukes, bio weapons. A virus with a 100% fatality rate but is easy to defeat with a vaccine and a mask. The entire Republican voter base will be dead in six months.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think Canada should seriously consider stocking up.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have Canadian Geese

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, but the UK has well over 200 nukes and wouldn't take kindly to Canada being attacked or invaded.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

If I were Canada I would start secret talks with both France and UK to ship some nukes to Canada.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If push comes to shove, the UK can quickly have Vanguard-class submarines near the Canadian coast who can hit targets up to 4,000 miles away.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thats all nice and stuff but I can guarantee you 100% UK, not any other EU country, will go to war against USA. Sadly, Canada needs to be able to defend itself. It needs it own nukes. And it needs to actually use them (on their own Canadian soil) should 1 American soldier step across the border.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nukes are a deterrent. And unlike missile silos on land, nuclear submarines off the coast can't be easily captured. You don't actually use nukes because then all hell breaks loose and there are no real winners in the end.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck you america, fuck all of you. Sitting on your hands and pointing out how shitty a deal this for Canada is how you got to where you are. Make a decision and follow through some fucking day. Letting us all suffer for your bullshit is cowardice personified. Fuck you.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 7

My fellow Americans, what we're feeling now is how a lot of our Russian comrades have felt through the backlash against Putinist genocide. Sucks, doesn't it?

We'd best get used to it. World's gonna have more and better reasons to hate us before too long.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Why are you shitting on individuals? I didn’t “sit on my hands”! I voted & was part of many left-wing political groups that got people registered & pushed left-wing policies, but we still loss. That’s not on me. I can hate the Chinese government without hating all Chinese people. I can hate the Russian government without hating all Russian people. Your comment is xenophobic against USA citizens. Most of us are all just plebs trying to make it through each day & your hatred doesn’t help.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean this, too, is just a result of Conservative policies and corporatism. Together they've done everything they can to both produce and convert people into individuals that don't have critical thinking skills and are constantly so placated that they basically tune out the rest of the world, let what happens happen, and only live in the moment without a single thought toward anything but what they're told by the same people that've made them as they are. Of course knowing this doesn't really >

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

> matter as it still leads everyone down the same path. So we end up with people that want to do something but are too scared and find it easier to just get lost in other things and people that don't care to do anything because they just believe "it is how it is," basically. No one's around to spur others to action and lift the haze that has been placed over them so we all just deal and cope with rugged free enterprise capitalism as the rich feed off the Socialism we give them.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've fucking hated Trump since the Obama years. I fucking hated Bush before that. Our opposition is controlled. Our elections are FPTP Electoral College bullshit. We are swimming against the current down here.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Felonious PIG 🐖 is as vile, stupid, and incompetent a politician as America has ever seen. He cares nothing for America or its people. He only seeks to enrich himself, have people applaud his greatness, and take infantile, petty vengeance on anyone he sees as persecuting or opposing him. He was put into power by fascist oligarchs and white supremacists who saw him as the useful idiot, easily manipulated by flattery to achieve their nefarious ends. We are fucked.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Countries don't pay tariffs, importers do. They pass the increased costs along to you. The money winds up in the federal government's hands. That is just a hidden TAX. Not Canada, Mexico, or China pays it, you do.

In the Revolutionary era they knew a sneaky tax when they saw one.

1 year ago | Likes 449 Dislikes 6

Also not like a lot of companies are going to use to increase their prices even more.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also when the tariffs are dropped the price won’t. This is a test to see how much more we’ll pay for shit

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Fun fact, the tea tax (of 1770 something) actually removed the tax in tea sold by the east India trading company and made them a monoploy. At the time, the company was considered too big to fail and was failing. The removal of the tea tax hurt the founding fathers who made big money smuggling tea.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

They also recognized a traitor when they encountered one. Today's "patriots" elected one.

1 year ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Europeans paying 23-27% VAT on goods to finance defence, education, health care etc = bad bad socialists stealing money we could never do that!!

Trumps 25% tax on goods = hell yea MAGA wohooooo! let's fund massive AI projects for our tech bro billionaires!

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’s a national sales tax but with retaliation so US companies are hurt too. So a double tax.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Sales taxes are also regressive in nature, meaning they hurt the poor more than they hurt the wealthy. So he raised a regressive tax without needing Congress, and he can say he didn't just raise your taxes and that this will actually help you to his base who are too busy practicing their "Roman" salutes at this point anyway.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So it's a way to tax your people while lying about who is actually paying it, when everyone knows that's bullshit. Got it. Sounds like the Rump alright.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And worse, what do you think happens to the price of local maple syrup when the one imported from Canada increases cost by 25%? That's right, the price of local maple syrup will also increase. Tada...

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It still hurts the other country as manufacturers either move to other suppliers, or consumers stop buying that manufacturers products when the price increases - either way, it's less trade into the destination country. Like everything fascists (nee: conservatives) do, harming people is the entire and only point.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It hurts everyone involved. Sellers lose sales. Buyers pay more. Consumers pay more.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

What it does is keep consumers desperate and turning on eachother instead of uniting and smashing our system to bits

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The idea of tariff is to make it easier for local producers to sell their goods. It is a negative for the external producers, and for the

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

consumers, but it's a benefit for the people in the field that is being taxed within the country that has the tariff.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Only really helps if that industry can actually compete though. If it cant be up to the level required, everyone suffers.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No exporters pay tariffs, but they increase their prices to the importers to cover the tariffs, which in turn makes it more expensive as it moves through that countries logistic chain. The only thing hitting the govt coffers is the sales tax, and fuel tax if there is any.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Export tariffs, where a country puts a tax on goods leaving the country, do exist, but that's not what's happening now. Interestingly, an export tariff on Canadian oil is being considered. This would most strongly affect gas prices in the Midwest as those refineries are set up to process heavy oil from the tar sands and would have to be retooled before they could process lighter Texas oil.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Totally incorrect.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You would think that somebody who frequently brags about being a graduate of Penn's Wharton School "of Finance" would know how tariffs work. In fact, I think he does know… So what is the real game here? It should become obvious by April that tariffs (and deporting farm workers) are just increasing the cost of almost everything, so how is he going to explain it all away?

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Eh, he'll blame Obama and the Dems. Wont even recognize Bidens stint in office.

For real though, like everything else they will do mental gymnastics to justify why thier costs have gone up and say somehow it's good for the country even though we will still be buying product from other countries.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The end goal is fascism. That's it. The powerful know what is coming with climate change and they are racing to get their hands on resources.

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

He’ll blame Biden for everything, (like he blamed Obama last time).

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

He'll blame Obama, too. And DEI. And trans people.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Because he doesn't care. It increases the prices sure, but it also increases the country income. The country earn more money, the people pay the price. He doesn't give 2 shits about anyone but himself.

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Just read this quote from Kristi Noem: "If prices go up, it’s because of other people’s reactions to America’s laws." https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/02/02/trump-tariffs-canada-mexico/

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You have to assume that he works on a very, very primitive cognitive and mental level, like "I hurt you until you bow down and give me what I want."
That's it, nothing more.
All the bad that tariffs will do to the US and its people? Doesn't matter, Canada and Mexico will bow down and pay double and in the end, Americans will have more than before. That's it. Primitive, drooling bully logic.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Americans won't have more than before. The govt will, and the oligarchs have their hands deep in the govts pockets. They aren't even hiding it anymore.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The US buys more from Canada than Canada buys from the US. So it'll be the US paying more in the end.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He thinks that Canadian sellers need the US market, while US buyers don't need the Canadian goods, b/c they can buy from everywhere, so he'd only hurt Canadian sellers. He doesn't think that buying elsewhere might be even more expensive and that Canda can sell elsewhere.
He is not bright.

Mexico and Canada also don't allow food/drink companies to put HFCS in indigestible. No one kid average being shot a week while trying to get an education. Healthcare. Etc. Been the case for me for my entire 34 years. Maybe because I grew up poor enough we only had a heater when we also needed to use the oven for more than 12 years of my life, and I actively watched us still being turned away from places that said they helped people like us ... nothing too new here, except now I fear being killed actively anytime I step out of my residence, instead of passively when I walked at night or something.

That is your big problem in America, your whole persona is wrapped up in a shitty flag, that some will hide behind and some will use as a weapon. We don't "register" with a party for life here, we simply vote, and we can change our minds at any time.
