Real question for those who continue to support this person despite the obviously poor performance and despite her receiving ~$500K in media deals anyway: why? Why do you support her?
She was some rich-kid from a ballet school. Australia does have real, high-skill breakdancers, but they are poor black kids so who cares about them, right?
Literally. She was some rich-kid from a ballet school. Australia does have real, high-skill breakdancers, but they are poor black kids so who cares about them, right?
Her gender has absolutely nothing to do with it for the vast majority of people. Her performance just sucked that hard and is deserving of ridicule for being displayed at the OLYMPICS.
No one is making fun of Raygun for being a woman. They're making fun of her for being FUCKING TERRIBLE and an embarrassment to my country. I've seen so many breakdancers online and hell, even in person who deserved to be there instead. But of course, getting into the Olympics takes a ton of cash, which clearly she had.
Lots of people, including here, made a lot of misogynistic comments about her, and spread conspiracies about how she was made our representative. Ignoring the fact that we're cunts, internationally trolling people is a national passtime, and that taking fuckin' breakdancing seriously as an olympic sport is not something we'd do.
Yeah, but much of the contempt is for her performance, not for her gender.
Like, I'm sure there are misogynists that use this opportunity to associate the two. But the majority of the criticism I see is that she was bad at breakdancing.
yes... that was the point of me giving a definition for misogyny. It implies I believe they are using the word wrong because people hated the performance not her gender...
Imma be honest, the loss was 54-0. A panel of judges didn't award a single point. Sometimes folks are just bad, male or female.
My understanding is that selection in Australia was messed up, and the deadline passed for a lot of their top athletes before they even learned there was a deadline.
I think a man in her place would also be getting a parody musical.
My understanding is that the selection process was messed up, with almost no notice of a deadline and no time to apply, resulting in many of Australia's best competitors not even being able to compete in the qualifiers.
Damn, I remebered that completely wrong, sorry! I searched again for further info, and found this to be very informative: https://www.vox.com/culture/367059/raygun-olympic-controversy-breaking-corruption I absolutely agree that the performance was...One of a kind. I did not "like" it, personally. And while it wouldn't have stopped people from harrassing her, a more balanced coverage would have been necessary. The BD community supports her, she won some battles, has studied BD and as always: /
I'd rather listen to people in the scene who are experts in their field, than to any rando's opinion who has never danced before. I danced for half my life, and while again - didn't like the performance besides it being super funny, dancing is art and art will be weird sometimes. Not a single ridiculous painter has ever experienced that kind of backlash. And I honestly struggle to remember any artist being "smashed to death", but that honestly might be on me.
I don't think she deserves to be constantly made fun of either. And I realize she probably faced extra challenges being female. I'm still not convinced the ridicule she's suffered is necessarily mysogonistic. Some may be, but that requires context. As a blanket statement I disagree, simply because it was a horrendous performance.

Why did I know it would be that shite tictok tune.

Raygun has joined the pantheon of truly great trolls. Not on Andy Kaufman’s level, but up there with Maurizio Cattelan and Cecilia Giménez

That would also being maxed out in the mediocre? Maybe? Thank goodness im not in charge
Clayman8
I guess it depends if it goes to 10, 50 or 100 🤔 5/10 would be the definition of mediocre though, youre right actually.

Do you need a definition of misogyny?
noun: misogyny
dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.
BishlamekGurpgork
Yeah, but much of the contempt is for her performance, not for her gender.

Dagordae
Because it's a woman who was hilariously shit at her sport at the Olympics?
Yeah, the hilarious failures are always mocked regardless of gender. Some are mocked so damn hard that movies are made about just how shit they are.
aCheekyFingerUpTheBum
If it was a man the narrative would have been a story about a plucky underdog like Eddie the Eagle.

You mean the guy who spent decades getting mocked? The man who is still famed for being a national joke?

The guy is a national hero with a movie about him

Australian breakdance being whacky is not her fault.

I doubt that performance was typical of Australian breakdancing. Also that doesn't make it mysogonistic.
