How the Monster sat for three years, poor thing

At least she was on her rear stand

Things weren't looking much better after an initial rinse off

At least by this point MOST of the spiders ran away

Duchess runs open filters so it was important to seal off the intakes and PCV. You can also see the battery was removed, as one that sits for years with no charge cycle is essentially an acid-filled paper weight. Sounds fun, right?

**I don't recommend ingesting this acid

Easy to see why she's such a lightweight, she lost a good amount in dirt and oil removal!

While the stock exhaust actually doesn't look that bad, I immediately jumped for the lighter cans that were laying around :)

Pro-tip: don't try taking the engine to 11k, happiness does not ensue

Such clean, much terrible choice in chain color

Now while I get this was the best option for military-base sticker placement, I hate you (previous owner) for doing this. They were way too difficult to remove.

The power commander is nice, but wow it's ugly

Much cooler than a dipstick

These pipes need to go, this amount of oxidation is unaccaptable

Looks much better without that windscreen. Needs bar-end mirrors though

Back into resting for a few weeks :(

Roommate getting her strapped down for transport to the crib

Two desirable machines that love to break. The Nissan is now in a state of broken that I don't care to fix anymore. Shit car.

Looking back at this, I cant believe how wrong I got the exhaust fitment -__-

But hey, rear seat cover installed and rear pegs removed. Such a cleaner set up

Final repairs before maiden voyage!

Items on list were:
-Oil and filter change (Motul 15W-40 Synthetic, Ducati OEM filter)
-Brake and clutch fluid flush (Motul RB600 DOT4 brake fluid, 1L)
-New Yausa battery (OEM replacement)
-Fuel tank clean, replacement fuel filter (OEM Ducati)
-Chain clean and lube
-Clean and oil K&N filters
-Probably other things I'm not remembering

Working in the rain is pretty zen.

She's on the road! And an absolute blast to bomb around on.

Many days were enjoyed going downtown and sharing hipster cold brews with her

But as luck would have it, she's broken again after a few months with a case of no spark. Still diagnosing but lets all wish her to get well soon. On another note, I did fix the exhaust fitment!

Nice, looks like you did a great job cleaning it up.

Old coils is the usual culprit.

Great post, thanks @OP!

No spark? Try checking the ground connection on the ecu, common fault.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will double check that, I thought I checked it though

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had one. Loved it. Except in the damp, when it wouldn’t start.

If the stickers still there, using a heat gun or hair dryer will help peel it off.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just FYI. If you use a hair dryer if you don't have a hot air gun. It slightly melts the glue and stickers come right off

TLDR: Guy has cool dirty bike. Guy cleans cool dirty bike. Cool bike isn't dirty anymore. (See last photo of Ducati Monster)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 just for the helmet. Cool bike too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No flat spots on the front tyre? Should probably slap new rubber on the bike anyway, after 3 years.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea surprisingly both tires were actually in really good condition. No dry rot either. Will probably just wear these down

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Way to go man. Fuckin neat.

The Ducati Monster is why I like motorcycles as much as I do. Sexy sexy bike...

I saw my first one at a convention years ago and it made me fall in love

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm personally a fan of the... 999R? The one with the stacked headlights

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love the frame

It's funny because I was originally a Triumph guy, but the I rode this Monster and I was ruined from that point on

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dad had one for years until it was stolen from the driveway in broad daylight on a pickup truck.

I'm in the process of looking for my first bike. This post makes me happy. Take you +1 good sir!

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I recently got a KTM Duke 640 LC4 as my first bike and I adore it. It's supermoto which isn't for everyone tho.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ditto. I'm considering a Yamaha MT-09

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would start out on a lighter bike unless you need to do a lot of freeway traveling. They are cheaper and easier to learn on.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should look at an MT-07 or maybe even a Triumph Street Twin. Both are fantastic and easy first bikes

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Start on an EX250 and take the MSF course. Good luck!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Something around there. 2/2.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well I'm based in the UK, and we have a way of getting a full bike license with experience on a 600. I'm looking for 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The "no spark" problem could simply be your key. Some modern MC's have immobilizers. When the key runs out, you can't start your bike.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Key is fine, coil packs are only getting 5V. If I apply B+ and jump the ECU signal I can get it to fire the plug. Wire issue somewhere!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a problem with my power commander cable touching the exhaust. Stopped sparking too. Worth a look at.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PC wiring was zip tied to the frame with the OEM harness, so luckily this wasn't an issue

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm trying to get my first bike so I can learn and drive. Crash course anyone? Please? Help... so many choices...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pick a used cruiser in the 500 to 750 cc range. It's fairly light, easy to steer and isn't likely to wheely on you. 1 to 3 grand will do...

Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been wanting to read this, currently going back through Art of Racing in the Rain

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Zen is a very different book than Racing in the Rain. It's philosophical, and tough at times, but beautifully written. A great read.

Riding around a Ducati with a $99 bell helmet? Seems skewed.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey I never said I was rich, BUT the nice thing about the Bell is it is DOT and Snell, which is important if I do any open-cockpit racing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair point, I wear the same helmet. A bit loud IMHO but it works.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea I don't mind, have earplugs in anyway. Plus I have a Sena and there are indented spots for the speakers near both ears so I cant feel it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a motorcycle technician I would leave the power commander on the side of the road before it leaves you on the side of the road...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rule #1 for any poor running diag is lose the commander. I have boxes full of these failed units.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea that was the first thing I pulled off when I first started having issues riding. Surprisingly wasn't my culprit though

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It will be... the green death will get to the circuit board

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Need to get it to an actual tuner and have the mapping properly adjusted, I'm not a piggy-back fan whatsoever

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll take that Nissan off your hands if you're in Florida
