Stockpilers took all the bread from the grocery store, but they didn't take the flour and yeast.

They're all living in 2020 while I'm living in 1820.

I have this as one of my plans. been meaning to make from French loafs, maybe even start a sour dough culture.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's actually a good idea. I'm stuck inside with a 8 y/o for two weeks. Let's make bread!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i tried to find flour and failed

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the idea! Keep forgetting I’m really good at baking bread! It’s actually super easy.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly!!!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Couldt find yeast in stores in Norway, but i mean sourdough is always an option, or flat bread

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1820 tastes much better

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

No preservatives.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly home baked bread can taste -way- better then the stuff on the shelves.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you cook it over an open flame outside, in true 1820 style?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just run this channel when I'm working and it's honestly really calming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dtBjqIu5W8

Recipe?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Flour, water, yeast, salt, time, heat.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tried to make Irish Soda Bread for today, assholes took all the flour.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes they did :(. Mine was empty

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At yeast you can make your own bread

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Maybe not where you are from, but they certainly did in my area. Every week it's getting harder and harder to get the weekly shopping.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No frozen stuff, no tinned stuff, no meat, no bread, no pasta. Fucking joke

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im going to try sourdough starter this week.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I prepared by also buying flour and yeast, but i have never made bread dough. Thank god for internet

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went to 5 stores to find yeast for my pizza crust on pi(e) day.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Flour and yeast is gone from my local stores. No sugar either. I don’t want to hoard, I just want to buy groceries and bake a cake.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When we saw that it was breaking containment last month, my housemates and I stocked up on basic bread machine ingredients.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We stocked up on some other stuff, no hoarding, but 2 weeks worth of supplies. We wont eat fancy, but we will eat.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everyone took all the chicken breast and thighs, good thing they left all the whole chickens that are about a 1/3 of the price!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I ended up getting tortillas. so now im having PB&J tortilla.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ive done this and its not that bad. Delivery system is effective

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cook em! Seriously butter the outside, fill w pb&j, cook on medium till a bit crunchy. Fuck yeah.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are buying all the Flour here in germany, but the Yeast and even the backing powder is still full.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Opposite here, out of flour and sugar. But still had bread. Not all breads but some was still left.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as it turns out, bread still dries out when it's frozen so some of that stockpiling is absolutely going to go to waste.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You gotta get uncut loaves and freeze it. I freeze bread all the time.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Croutons?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dry bread is still edible bread.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in a somewhat knowhow area, and ALL of the bulk stuff was gone long before the low prep skill food was even touched.

6 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

Same here. As soon as things started looking worse, even yeast was gone instantly. Some people still bought tons of TP, but what can you do.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found one 3-packet set of pizza crust yeast tucked in between some chocolate chips. that's it. That's all I could find. I just want bread.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where is this "knowhow" area?

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Close enough to a major metropolitan area but far enough away that farm animals and gunshots are normal, or rather required.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can still get everything but eggs. Idiots bought out all the canned soup...why not make it if you're stuck home anyways...so much salt

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I was at the store today and there was basically no meat, but there were still plenty of eggs. I find it interesting 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

how people from different regions prioritize different groceries in this situation. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

A lot people here doing the keto eat lots of eggs thing, so it's not as surprising as it is annoying. There were egg limits before this

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some people don’t know how, some people have to try and manage it while wrangling bored kids, some are just plain tired.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I have 3 bored kids and a FT job. Kids can help cook just fine, use their boredom to stir and chop some veggies. Even the 3yr old.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That doesn’t work on all kids.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'll be teaching the 7yo how to bake while we are home.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Are they idiots because they bought canned soup or because they bought ALL of the canned soup. Honest question.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Canned soup was relatively abundant, thats one of those single serve items.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ramen noodles on the other hand, gone.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All of the canned soup, I have some for an off day once in awhile, but really that shit is terrible for you if you eat it all the time

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like everyone's gonna fucking bake now. They're gonna eat fast food, watch Netflix and let the flour chill for another few years.

6 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 0

I baked 6 trays of cookies yesterday and I don't regret a single Fucking one of them

I make scones and damper all the time so i already had a months worth of flour

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coronavirus is killing the bread industry. Toilet paper is the new carb.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Eh, I might consider a little baking if I end up stuck in my apartment for two weeks. Have a couple holiday cookie recipes I haven’t 1/

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

had a chance to try out yet, so fuck it, why not? 2/

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The second day all the yeast butter and eggs ran out at my store. Suddenly everyone decides to bake.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The food delivery companies around me are offering a no-contact delivery. Tell them where to leave the food, & even take a pic to show them.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They’re touching the same things you touch, and then you touch your face and your food. Not sure how well that bodes.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's useless. But much like airport security, it doesn't help, but it makes dumb people feel safe. Same people that have 300 rolls of TP.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So...it'll go bad? I bought flour so I would have enough to make my Mac&Cheese.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Whole wheat flour lasts 3-6 months and unbleached all purpose lasts about a year (both longer in the fridge & freezer)

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You can get weevils and bugs in flour, rice, and dry pasta. Freeze it for 4 days to kill any eggs, then store in airtight containers :)

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's not a bad idea. I don't have any airtight containers right now, but I can probably get one like what my mom has.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A food safe 5gal bucket from home depot should do it. We did that when we didn't have a big enough rising bowl for some rolls we were makin

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll have to look into that. Not the Orange Buckets though...those aren't food-safe I don't think... (Also...I have 5lbs, not 40lbs...)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Already made 10 calzones and they are in the freezer.

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Nice! You're my hero. I want some calzones too :(

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Now that's the best idea I've seen yet.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Binging with Babish has a good recipe but it can be scaled down quite a bit to make more reasonable portions.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, I will check it out.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It has been checked out. I was not savvy enough to know that the dough needs to chill that long. But thanks again.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're welcome, and remember, practice makes perfect :)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Started to bake bread for financial reasons and it's great. Tastes so much better and I get something to do with my spare time

6 years ago | Likes 234 Dislikes 1

Ah spare time...that thing you lose if you ever manage to not have financial difficulties anymore.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you don't have to add a ton of sugar in it.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Suggest a recipe to start with? Plz

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now I understand why all the great bakers I know are stay-at-home moms.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I made 2 loaves today, it was awesome! My first time making bread. Also, a pretty chill relaxing activity to help cope with the stress.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... spare... time? What’s that?

6 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 0

You're about to find out when everything shuts down.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think its something people with job fulfilment have

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's the time that you could be doing literally anything else except browsing Imgur. It's now. You are wasting your spare time right now.

6 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

I can be taking a dump and baking bread? Both involve loaves...so...

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Wanted to downvote because I felt personally attacked... but that’s because you’re right. +1

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Technically, my Imgur browsing time is "work time"

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Financial reasons? A loaf of break is like $2, you ok man?

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Homemade bread is 1000x better than a bag of cheapo sliced bread. It's got those fancy air pockets, nice and moist, crusty crust. So good.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe he’s baking pot bread and clearing $5k/day tax-free.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, he might be talking about nice bread tho. Also, it's incredible how far some flour and yeast goes.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I mean... You still shouldn't be eating bread that much, to the point where it would make fiscal sense to make it yourself from scratch.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I make about a loaf a week and usually throw some out as it goes bad before I finish it. Better quality bread and no sugar makes sense to me

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We're on a tight budget and my business isn't blooming so I got time in my hands and it's good to get my old skills in use

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$3 for a loaf, or $3 in ingredients for a much BETTER loaf that doesnt have a bunch of sugar - and flavored how you want.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I buy my bread flour at Costco $5.99 for 25 lbs

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're worried about the financial hit a loaf of bread will do to you, you should be more concerned with your utility bill & running the

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oven for all of these loafs of bread...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Your going to use the oven or stove to make food anyways, why not make good bread too? And Im not concerned about finances of buying (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

vs making bread, Im just pointing out the fallacy of cost vs outcome here. The sugar in store-bread also adds health costs too (2/2)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have a recipe by chance? I've been making homemade pizza dough, but that's as far as my baking skills go

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

My fav is the milk bread, sponge method from here: http://bakerbook.altervista.org/?book=secret#calibre_link-6

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

^one of my favorites, I love a good homemade multigrain

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you want a no-knead variety or a mixer variety? I make both at home.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This one is pretty brilliant. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 cups of water, 1pack of dry yeast, sugar, salt, rolled oats, all purpose flour and oil. I like to wake up my yeast by adding it in warm

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sugar water and then I add about 1/2 cup of oats so they soak for a bit and the yeast gets rocking. Then I add salt to taste 1-2 tsp I think

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And start to add flour. I really don't measure the ingredients but work with my hands just adding and kneading the dough until it starts to

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get less sticky and peels from my fingers and the bowl while I knead it, work the dough for 5 minutes before adding to the oil so the gluten

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd like to know too.. Bread always comes out real tough, not soft, and tastes like yeast

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you want a no-knead variety or a mixer variety? I make both at home.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No-knead, I dont have mixer

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I started with this recipe and just started adjusting things as needed like more or less water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQtsvPlE7w8

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No-knead, 50-60% hydration, just mix 1kg flour with 600ml water, 2-3g yeast. Mix and let it rise for 8h. Create forms, let rise4h, cook 200C

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

All purpose or bread flour?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bread Flour is best, but AP will work too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I normally prepare a different one, 24-36h with 12% protein flour, but this I wrote (8-12h) works with all purpose

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You calling me old!!! Well, ok. Kinda...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you can freeze bread

6 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

All bread freezes and thaws well. Tortillas, bread, naan. Also put it in the fridge to let it last longer. ;)

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Frozen bread tastes like ass. Rye bread at least. People don't really eat wheat bread here.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eh, I understand some people prefer fresh bread. I always toast mine so it tastes the same regardless.

I find it unlikely that such essentials will be shut down. It would have to be an absolute apocalypse

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No, just an average disaster (Sandy)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea but that caused damage to infrastructure and had people leaving their home towns for safety

You can flush toilet paper until water is gone ?
