No. Freakin. Way. I worked for this artist (J.C. Fontanive) a decade-ish ago helping to assemble those sculptures (at the time, most of them were hummingbirds or moths). He was such a great guy to be around - very chill and patient, always pulling some new thread that interested him. Great to see his work connecting with folks.
The very best part about this is, no matter your profession or spot in life, every person has the capability to bring this joy to another. And often times it doesn't cost a cent, just a bit of care and time.
I'm not. Maybe really horrible people like Trump or Putin are only a small percentage of the population (but not insignificant: even 1% of the 8 billion people on Earth is 80 million), but you'd be amazed at the sorts of horrible shit most of the seemingly normal everyday people around you can get up to, especially if the right words are said to them.
The problem comes from the small number of bad one gaining power, because they have no scrupules about being bad to get it. We outnumber them, but we need to have a unified voice to affect change.
I remember a teacher coming up to me when I was a child doing something inoffensive and harmless to occupy myself, and the sheer scorn with which she said "simple things amuse simple minds", then stalking off.
Dunno why it pissed her off so much, but in retrospect I'm happy it did.
This should be the "news" every night. People being people and being nice to other people because they can't even imagine not being nice to other people.
I'm sorry but if this were the news every night, problems that need fixing would go ignored. That's why the news is all negativity. If it was all positive then nothing would need to be fixed.
Fucking cheers to that. I had my first professional drum lesson with a retired college professor today! Check out the program Soundplant50 ". You can add ANY sound to any pc computer input press for drums!! Super cool
Yes, but for this the people who don't like to, would have to (begrudgingly) go into politics. What stands between us and utopia are the excuses of decent people why they don't have to take responsibility.
I'm fixing my neighbors car tomorrow. I have the skills/equipment and I'll be damned before I charge them labor. I've overheard them telling their friends 'I'm good people' and that's enough for me.
I really think the problem is that the news shouldn't be entertainment, it should be informative programming. News SHOULD be boring, with as much context given as possible. It shouldn't be buzzwords, edited clips to interpret things incorrectly, or straight up propaganda. Clips like this aren't really news, it's feel good entertainment. It has its place, but not as news.
I don't think it *should* be boring, because if nobody is watching it then it's the same outcome as if the news was just clips like this, people not being informed about the world around them.
That said, it's incredibly challenging to make the news engaging without it sliding into the shitshow we have today. I don't know where that line is or how to walk it without stepping too far to either side.
Another perspective here is instead of the free press focusing on matters of national importance, like the president calling for the execution of political opponents, we would manufacture a bubble of positivity to distract from the actual hell we're living through.
If you want feel-good stories, don't get it from the news, just follow these types of pages on social media. Not that hard.
i think their point was that this should be the news because things like the president calling for his enemies to be executed don't exist since no one can imagine not being nice to others. i hope that's what they meant, at least. but i agree with you, in that utopia there really wouldn't be a need for news as we understand it anyway. until then, the free press needs to fight back against the right-wing media takeover and continue calling out injustice
It's so true. We all know we are guilty of it. It really is just a "pseudo" addiction. I'm with you on that though, every time I get jebaited by something I remind myself do I really wanna waste my emotional resources on this bullshit?
I mean, the brain is wired to focus on problems because that’s what kept us alive for thousands of years. Its’s not a moral failing on people that some assholes figured out how to exploit that reaction for profit.
