Some idiots decided that setting our neighborhood "little library" on fire would be funny. These wooden boxes cost around 500 to build and were stocked by donations. There were a total of three boxes burned.
Update: I spoke with Debbie Feaser Stretch, who initially coordinated the installation.
1. They do not know who did it. The reward for information is currently 500.00. Contact: Okaloosa Co. Sheriff's Department 850-651-7400.
2. A GoFundMe has been created. Let me know if you are an IMGURian! Link: https://www.gofundme.com/bringthebooksback
3. Any donations exceeding what we need will go to the Niceville Public Library or Bluewater Elementary School Library
4. If you want to Donate books PM me and I will send you an address
5 Many people have commented that 500 seemed expensive for each box. This amount included box, books , and five year maintenance. They are also discussing moving the boxes/installing lights to a better lit area to prevent further vandalism.

Update on previous post

This is located in the Bluewater Bay subdivision in Niceville FL and happened between 1/27 and 1/28. I tried to update the post but the comment were hard to track. Original Post: https://imgur.com/gallery/HaLRT

I'm starting to wonder if the world isn't such a nice place after all.

What an absolute pack of cunts.

How the fuck does that cost 500 anything? I'm guessing you're not talking cents.

500 to build?!?!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sorry @op, not everybody thinks that reading is such a great activity, spacially brainless teenagers in vandal mode.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

500? Thats a little steep. This is a shame but you could build that for under 100, right?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I was thinking the same, unless most of it is a zoning law fee or some stupid shit like that

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

$500 seems steep, I could do that for 100 lol

More like Meanville!!!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

$500 for a wooden box?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

see the update . She told me that included maintenance for 5 yrs. We are going to try to get the boxes lit or moved with donation money

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is despicable

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I know. $500 for a mailbox? Seriously?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op $500? Make them yourself a whole lot cheaper.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@op is there an address where people can donate books? I have a few I could send.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I am talking with the lady who initially installed these. I am going to update once I hear from her.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

PM me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok thank you

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Horrible,....but whomever is charging you $500 for one of these is ripping you a new one on a whole new level.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yo this shit pisses me off A LOT. I love those things, you gotta be a real asshole to do that.

Heeeeyyyyyy, lets all go diving!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it irony if something disappointing happens in Niceville? I got irony wrong before an i'm on my guard now

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean... It does-- did have a few donation-library-box-things.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

500$. I can build that for under 100$. 57-75$ if there are over 10. That doesn't include labor but it's charity.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Pressure treated wood isn't cheap...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

It's not that expensive. The entire build is small.

My sister lives in bluewater and told me about this yesterday. Probably some kids.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

This is what happens when you put Ray Bradbury books too close to other books.

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 2

I recently started playing the Fahrenheit 451 game on the Commodore 64 (thanks ex!) and it's really interesting!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ironically I own an original signed copy of Fahrenheit.

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Wow, that's awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here. It was originally signed by everyone that checked it out at the library.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Then people stopped reading of their own accord.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah well my Accord as nice as it was couldn't tow my work trailer so I had to get a Ford.

Florida man does not burn books. Florida man does pay $500 for an outdoor library stand.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

then it was Florida woman?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was Florida Teen. Those hooligans! Hoodlums!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Florida woman is too busy killing kids and hiding the bodies.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1. People are stupid for blowing it up. 2. $500?! Whoever paid that is stupid.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 6

Labor and there needs to be support. Those books could get heavy and might tilt the box (especially in wet soil)

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Still seems exorbitant.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Not really. Weatherproofing plus good materials plus making sure it'll stand adds up fast.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I'm no master carpenter and I could build that easily for under 100 in material concrete and all.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I could totally MacGyver that thing together for 50.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know right

Farenheit 451. Sigh

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

There's a solid joke in there if only you had made a little more effort instead of just laying the punchline out there like a floozy

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

This time wasn't meant to be a joke. Saddened someone burned books, like in 451.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

was looking for that comment. got disappointed. opened replies. disappointment melted. so here we are even stevens

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

cunty comment, +1 for username

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

500 to build.. the real criminal is the contractor.

9 years ago | Likes 348 Dislikes 8

Shouldn't cost more than about tree fiddy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yeah seriously that's really hard to believe.

9 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 4

The contractor is probably a character from a Carl Hiaasen book.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Just had 1 made for $30 . Took 10 min to dig hole to install and another $6 for 2 bags of sand .

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My fiancé is a carpenter. I can see him doing stuff like this out of the kindness of his heart considering what he's already done for others

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

yes but it would not be good to ask any profesional to do work for free. if they chose to that is an other matter.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

but work deserves to be paid for and people should not be guilted into carity.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He's never guilted. Everyone WANTS to pay him.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about water proofing for rain or making it stable enough for storms? I'd assume something special was added for it to be $500 idk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

500 yen

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think they mean the total cost of ALL the boxes + books, they say 3 were burnt, so I assume there's more

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

it specifially said rhe books were donated. i took it as $500 for the empty box on a pole

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about water proofing for rain or making it stable enough for storms? I'd assume something special was added for it to be $500 idk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most of them are

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Perhaps this includes the books inside as part of the cost ..

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

For $500 you could buy the fire resistant version.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Unless there were like 80+ boxes there is no way it cost that much. You could probably get a home depot to donate the material anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it's at most 30 nails. Absolute tops. Sixteen pieces of wood, roofing, and concrete to anchor it. That's forty dollars absolute max.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking there are 20 boxes, and the whole project cost $500.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yeah I want to understand why it's so much

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

40 dollars in materials, 460 dollars into the "not for profits" pockets.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We could build probably 50 to 70 of these things for 500. Maybe we should put up some more boxes for the locals.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Depends on the unit of measurement. It could be jelly beans.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

it's in freedom units.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Inches?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

eagle screetches, probably. or chipmunk nuts.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I could see 500 dimes with installation.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't build one of those for any less than 750 jellybeans.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Shmeckels

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I am a carpenter and it looks like $40 materials tops and should be no labor cost?

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 3

Was waiting for a real carpenter before I spoke up. Cost of getting to the site, as well. I'd have thought you'd want to eat as well.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

It would require a fair amount of weather proofing, also setting the post. The council probably wants the logos exactly right and do that.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

So 100 tops, really sixty dollars. Considering concrete can be made by hand and is very easy to make.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That'd still be a max of 200 I'd charge for that, I could do this work without power tools within 5 hours approx. source, am a carpenter

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

My dad was a carpenter for over 35 years, I wonder what he'd think of all this. He can't use computers. He's probably blame prefab culture.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, you're Satan

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ehh it's a bit steep but I am going to assume that they have to be more weather resistant than say a large birdhouse.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

Yeah if it was made out of bricks i could maybe see it being $500. But not water resistant wood

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Still, treated lumber isn't that expensive.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Yeah... You could do that for 50 bucks and have it look and function the same.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's also Florida, you'd have to figure a way so the books don't get destroyed by the elements yet accessible to people.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

It pretty clearly wasn't hermetically sealed. Those books weren't protected from humidity, if that's what you're suggesting.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly what I'm suggesting.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Perhaps a door?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

You mean putting a door on my house will keep the rain and cold outside? Yeah right, next you're telling me I should close my windows...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I tripped over one yesterday in the dark when I got home from work.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If the perps are caught, they should be forced to read "Fahrenheit 451." And then do 100 situps underneath a parked car.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was once ruled as blasphemy to burn books. Mainly because the only book around at that time was the bible...

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

In that time, the reason why the only book around was the bible was because they burned the others before.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

Completely untrue. Please do some research instead of blindly listening to anti-Christian propaganda.

Don't mistake book burning with drunken teens wanting to set fire to something. Doesn't excuse them, but it's far from the same thing.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

targeting three makes it intentional

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The thing is three were burnt. I don't know if drunken teens would have that kind of attention span over someone with malicious intent.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Vandalism is unworthy of a civil society also, although we don't really have any truly civil societies anywhere

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Don't confuse the stupidity of some of any society's individual members with the stupidity of all of society's members.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not calling you a liar I'm just curious. How does it cost 500 to make one of these.

9 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 15

Not calling you a liar but it kinda sorta sounds like you ARE calling OP a liar

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Seriously, I could get the components for a tiny fraction of that cost, make it myself, and donate it. 500 dollars is a rip off.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And the time would mainly be waiting for layers of paint/glue to dry.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not the materials but the labor for the cost. I work for a contractor.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

At MOST that thing is $100 in materials

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Jesus guys. I'm a cocktail waitress w a brain. I'll make it happen for free. Borrow tools, use recycled wood, and boom. Books from S.A.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

But what about people who can't read Afrikaans?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My across the street neighbor has one that built and he maintains himself. Not $500

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

How cool is that?!!! I have a friend who started a lending library in Saudi Arabia. I love people who do this!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Retail price for the brand name product.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

probably including the cost of the books that were destroyed. maybe even adding the other two little libraries that were burned in OPs area

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

The books were donated.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, but they still had an estimable value. like, if you burnt down a museum the insurance would still have to pay for the donated artwork

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Costs $500 to buy "official" materials/plans. Family friend helped me and my dad build one for my mom for about $150 IIRC

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mess around with wood as a hobby... I should make a flat pack version of this and give them away.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Probably built by the city. 5 workers 8 hours. Or maybe that's just my city lol

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

People all seem to be experts on it now but I was curious about this too. I appreciate those who answered the question!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I built my house 10 years ago, they charged me 200 to build my mailbox in the approved style...so given the extra weight, sure.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Was your box by any chance... brick? -_-

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LOL, no. Cedar post and an exposed mailbox on the top. Seriously.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe it was 500 for all 3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Materials and man hours to build and install the product go into the cost of the box.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

its still a slightly sturdier mailbox. 500 is ridiculous.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Does that cost include the labor?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think the labor was donated.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I do woodworking. The cost isn't so much the materials (would be about 100 to 150 bucks). The cost is the time...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would like to see you do that for less. Get a truck with a hole drill then cement truck then a carpenter at 35 bucks an hour.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

My kid's castle loft bed cost about $500 in materials including the paint. This is a glorified mailbox.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol a hole drilled?? What? It's a fucking mailbox

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just how much concrete do you think one of thoses would need?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Min charge for delivery I'm assuming. They aren't going to show up for ten bucks.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

As small amount you would need for that....no truck. Concrete, bucket and water.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Depends on the ground. Clay like where I live? You're not gonna need much. Sandier, looser ground? Gonna need a LOT.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really think they could get away with gravel and a hole with a treated post. The thing is not holding up a deck.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Doesnt, but if you going to sell to someone, arent you gonna make money? Not just produce for cost?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I guess people here work for free. I have to put food on the table.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

This is the sort of thing you'd think someone would volunteer to do.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Did you volunteer to do it? Neither did anyone else. Our societies run on volunteers, but are struggling because we think others will do it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I don't live there, and my neighborhood (Columbus, OH) has one of the best library systems in America. I do volunteer for other stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know the concrete footers are huge because of the weight of the box and the sandy soil.

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 7

Perhaps if hire a contractor to do it, he or she will also need to account for time spent working on it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

80lbs of concrete like trefiddy

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 3

Then the concrete is probably the size of the great wall of Mexico.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Worked at home depot, can confirm.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Even with all that, somebody made a nice profit.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

Do you realize how expensive it can get to weatherproof. Like, go make one fully weatherproofed on $50. You're bullshitting if you do.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

And water/humidity proof for the books while still accessible.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Probably about $450 in profit lol

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

exactly my thought.,..

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I honestly don't know. That is what they reported in the paper when they first went in under a year ago.

9 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 5

It should not have cost that. Me and some friends started a neighborhood garden last year and made these for free from found wood 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It took like 20 minutes to make each box (we made 10 total for one neighborhood). Neighborhood outreach is way cheaper and better

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and the books probably get damaged because it's not 100% weatherproofed. That takes more than just twenty minutes of nailing wood.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Install cost maybe?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

There is an outside cost of paying for the labor to make it. It probably cost $20 in material but someone was paid ~$400 to build them.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Just throwing this out there, has to be weather tight. It holds books in all conditions.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

It also has to look nice. It's in an HOA Community (probably) that is nice enough to have a little library. Not a trailer park...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except conditions that can cause a fire apparently.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Still pretty darn easy to do.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

If I had to be sure it would be water tight it would probably cost 500. Butyl tape, drip edge, shingle, 4x4, plexiglass, caulk, cement, etc.

UPDATE: According to a Facebook Contact they burned a total of three. The fire department had to put the fire out at one of the others.

9 years ago | Likes 4366 Dislikes 16

I would gladly build you a new one (or 3). Unfortunately, I'm not close to Florida.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Why waste the fire dept. money? Wouldnt the fire just burn itself out?

As a woodworker, I know I'd be happy to build yo a few replacements. I'm on the other side of the country, but I think you'll find a lot 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

of local people willing to help on https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/. Something like this would cost less than $50 in materials. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Incidentally, I posted a request in that subreddit on your behalf. Good luck!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The lady who built these has an arrangement for repair. We are going to try to get lights installed with donation money

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, damn. I was an electrician for 15 years. Adding solar stand-alone (no utility) lights would be a cinch - if I was 3,000 miles closer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But maybe the GoFundMe can buy the fixtures, and labor can be donated?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably will be the case. The hard part is getting the clearance from the community board. Everything has to be voted on around here

this guy knows what's up

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How can they cost $500. Was labor included?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

They have a bit of weatherproofing done to protect the books.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maintenance for 5 yrs labor and materials. WIll be replacing books

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're put on a post that has a concrete footing, painted inside and out, probably had a shingle roof of some kind... $500 easy with labour

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

With labor no doubt. The ones in my neighborhood were all built by volunteers they don't match in color or design tho ????

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This looks like it was a city/library thing, so IDK. *shrug* we have them at my cottage, but they're strictly volunteer, so whatever goes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$500?! That's insane. That's maybe $40 in materials and two hours of work.

9 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 11

Then again...kicking a Zelda chicken is a 500 chicken fine

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dig a hole, put in a concrete footing, shingle it... $500 isn't hard to go through.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I was about to say if its $500 I'll take the materials left off a job and build a few.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you accounting for weatherproofing? Seems like it could cost a bit to keep the books from getting moldy.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Plus cost and time to dig/install concrete footing. Probably add up kinda quick.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Also hurricane proofing #florida

No electricity here I think, or plumbing. Carpenters maybe, but not $460 expensive for that

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

9 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 2

Emotional value

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You are leaving out man-hours, paint, shaping, sanding, assembly, also the glass cutting and fitting. These are nice, crafted boxes.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 5

We just completed this same project for Eagle Scouts. Not including the time the kids spent working on the project, $500 is accurate.
