My players, having allied themselves with the Githzerai (that replace the deep gnomes in my version) assault a troll lair to prove themselves to the Githzerai.
At level 5, I thought Trolls would be a very, very hard challenge, so instead of the 40 odd trolls the campaign book describes, I figured one group of around 6 with a shaman would be scary enough and would probably do some damage.
CR is bullshit though. The dwarven cleric uses greenflame blade. The red dragon sorcerer uses firebolt. I think only 3-4 regenerations happened during the whole fight.
Figured this would do real damage, but the dwarven cleric has good armor and decent HP and keeps them at bay while the bard keeps thunderwaving the trolls back into the acid river I recently made and figured would give the players a chance because well, 6 fucking CR 5 creatures while they're level 5 should be hard AF.
The lone Githzerai observer who was going to jump in if they all got slaughtered too easily just stood and watched in awe.

Too cool! I have such a hard time figuring out what to throw at my level 3 players. So far they have steamrolled most “deadly” encounters

Sounds like you have some clever players @OP. It may be time to throw some mixed unit encounters at them. Good job!

Oh for sure! Clearing Troll caves is a part of the Night Below campaign and I really thought 6 trolls would give them a hard time lol!

I’ve heard of Night Below but never run it. I should check it out. Sounds fun.

It is a cool campaign. I generally use the first book as start for almost any campaign. It's underdark delving heavy after that.
