A Belgian retired shop owner asked a permit to install a garage door. The permit was denied. Zero fucks were given that day...

Late edit: Just realised I forgot to pay cat tax. Here's our fancy cat Mango (yeah, that's his name, don't ask): http://imgur.com/a/GoLCP

But they allowed the crappy awning above the Windows. No matter where in the world, city government's are insane.

That's a paddlin'

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Good old Belgianuity.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Such a perfect example for a Belgian solution

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really like that BMW. I really do.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good start. Now automate that shit!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Never in a hurry ever door.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's way too much work, but good job.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still technically not a door.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh belgium...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was hoping it would be a single swiveling piece

10 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

Sweet E36

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jeah thats a huge hassle!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on if you live in a place with crappy street parking or not. He could have made it an automatic process.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what a fucking hardout cunt, good man

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Fuck the municipality" - that guy.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Technically legal is the best kind of legal.

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

This is pretty cool. he just needs a better ramp and to automate it. :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The license plate: NAF - Not A Fuck.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

that's what I was looking for

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's great and all but sooooo much effort.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Maybe he could automate it somehow? Anyone wanna help the guy out stickin' it to the man more efficiently?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I didn't need to read the description. I fucking knew it from the picture that this was Belgium. I guess that's what it means to be Belgian.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same here!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're a crazy bunch

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyone else think he was just going to smash the window with the bench and drive out?

10 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 1

Only a brick wall and shards of glass in the way now, perfect!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

No, I expected it to open automatically like all the garage doors I know.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yep

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought the whole wall would fill up

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Flip up

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought it was Bernie.

10 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 6

Bernie has been a lazy good for nothing politician. His 1st paycheck came when he was a brand new 40 y/o politician. He has no experience.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's not?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Bernie isn't that smart. Sorry

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

you have butt hurt the imgur progressive circle jerk.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if they refuse to understand simple math, and common sense, their problem. they need to take a good look @ history. Or they can fuck off

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

He couldn't install a garage because the centre of the village is protected as some kind of heritage, installing a garage door 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

But that shopfront is really damn ugly... installing a garagedoor could not possibly have made it uglier.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

While I agree it's not the prettiest, it's more about authenticity. The centre is protected 'cause it's a typical old rural village centre.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

would change the look of the house and thus requires special permission. Source: article in post, also I live 5 km (3mi) from that house.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

https://www.google.com/maps/@50.820429,3.716985,19.04z ; Have a look on streetview , it's the shop next to the diner.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's going to be awkward having that big window when the garage eventually gets filled with crap.

10 years ago | Likes 176 Dislikes 1

Based on how he did the door, I feel like he's not the kind to let it get messy

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Motivation to keep it clean.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Curtains, my friend. Curtains.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Or some fancy Venetian blinds.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In the U.S., most would. In Europe, where you can neither park nor pee for free, not so much.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He looks like he wouldn't give half a shit about it though.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

I know i wouldn't.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He probably just die. He looks old. Then no more responsibilities.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i can immediately think of several improvements

10 years ago | Likes 340 Dislikes 17

Trade in the Bimmer for a Land Rover and not worry about the ramps.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I'd actually like to hear that, as someone who wishes he'd gone to college for engineering

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

•make it a single unit instead of sep window n wall •have the ramps be hinged n incorporated into the wall •smaller window to include …

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

…counter-balance mechanism •something else w the bench • trompe l'oeil for aesthetics … etc

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yes, but this was most likely made with limited funds and maybe not waiting for the 100% best solutions. The point is: FUCK THE SYSTEM

10 years ago | Likes 193 Dislikes 7

Yeah! How dare they preserve cultural heritage at the cost of 40 seconds out of my day.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

True that

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

1. Move pull handle to outside edge instead of in the middle.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2. Use a linear rail to connect the window panel to the brick panel so they can side against each other but still move as one piece.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have ramps flip out with a level system attached to moving wall so pulling wall lowers ramps.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Window coverings.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno. Might be that complicated so it doesn't classify as a garage door.

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

That's what I was thinking.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it qualifies as a display window, that's how they load small showrooms.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You severely overestimate the efficiency of the Belgian government/law enforcement.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Quite possible. I'm not Belgian.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jump through that window every time!

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Me thinks it would get expensive after the novelty wears off...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Authorities:

10 years ago | Likes 2655 Dislikes 17

That is a pertinent gif. +1.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't expect the Belgian authorities to be so... so.... fabulous!

For those wondering: the garage request was denied because cobblestone roads are protected as Flemish cultural monuments.

10 years ago | Likes 875 Dislikes 7

That is such useless bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh.. thats explains a LOT about the roads in Antwerp...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We have similar rules in Poland, but the number of cobblestone roads is slowly diminishing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck cobblestone, it sucks, it belongs in the past.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

lol and then they let in a lot of people that will kill their culture

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Yeah well, cobb- *trips* sorry, cobblestone pa- *trips* CERBLESTONE PERTHS ARE NICE AND *trips* fuck cobblestone.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Not to mention a roller door would have looked like shit on that street.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Those crazy Flems!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He wanted to install a garage door, not a fuckin' garage. It wouldn't have anything to do with the cobblestone streets.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I appreciate the respect for history, but I am thrilled he was able to zerofuck around it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As an EU4 player xonvert the culture to Prussian and go into poland...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kinda odd, given that Belgian's national motto is "WE ARE NOT A ROAD!"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because the door somehow has anything to do with the streets?

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 9

I'm assuming his original plans involved paving over the actual road.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Look at u/W4rl0cke's post. It's like a HOA thing, they're worried about how the garage door would look.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have a phlegmish cultural monument in my nose.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why the fuck is that worth shit? I can understand very relevant cultural legacies, but modern civilisation has actual needs, too.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Also Tour of Flanders (cycling race) need cobbled roads as they are far more challenging than asphalt.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aesthetics. Tourists like things which are old and pretty. No one wants to visit an asphalt highway.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actual needs = garage door?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Old man with a car to store is a need compared to 'yay, old roads!'. Specially if said roads are not of scientific significance.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That street is made from setts, not cobblestone. Stupid fact retained from university course. I'm sorry.

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

What makes a sett a setted street rather than a cobbled? is it the pattern in which bricks are layed? is the actual shape/material of brick

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's whether you set the stones in place carefully or just cobbled the whole thing together. Source: a place from which something comes.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I had a look on Google street view, and seriously, wtf. There is a garage door on the next house: http://imgur.com/u6OUKCv They could've 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 1

2/2 allowed one in a similar style. His house is the one with the green awning.

10 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

That style is a former stable/carriage entrance. If it was that pre-protection, lot harder to shut it down. Agree on a mock one though.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I noticed that the house with the green awning has the same bench, and it also has a garage door now.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

That was probably already there when it got protected, also seems to be built like that from the start. Problem is structural change to ext.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

In this case it's also because the look of the village centre is protected, you can't change much regarding the exterior.Sce:article in post

10 years ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 2

In that case the right procedure would have been to request the removal of a garage door and when it's denied build it.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Classic way to deal with stuborn german administration.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

that makes perfect sense. 1 person's garage is not worth augmenting history and destroying tourism in the process.

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 7

I'm pretty sure "augmenting" is not the word your brain wanted to put there.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

"fuckin with"

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I see/hear Americans do this alot (use words that don't match the context). Just an observation, not sure if anyone else has noticed it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's definitely a thing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's probably gonna use it three times then say it fuck it and park on the street....I know I would

10 years ago | Likes 1746 Dislikes 13

Said he planned this whole thing for two years already, those old guys get really stubborn and rather die than park in the street.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You underestimate how expensive parking in the street can get...

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

As a garage door guy he can still get an automatic opener on there so 3 times later he will probably buy an opener

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't know how much of a PITA parking can be here.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not the states, he would have to park several blocks away depending on the time. He wouldn't have built it if it wasn't worthwhile.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you ever seen a belgian street? That country is made for MicroMachines!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is not the point!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

until he orders some electric motors to handle most of the heavy lifting

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like there's already wheel marks from the door on the floor. So he's probably used this thing quite a few times by now.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or he's going to install electric motors real quick.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm married to a Flem and they're very stubborn so I think he damn well will use it. The gemeente love to say 'nope' though.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Being from Belgium , parking is a serious problem here.. space just ran out. America is built for cars! Belgium not so much

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Easy solution: don't own a fucking car. If I can manage it in Montréal, you can in Belgium.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

also, we are just fully packed, nothing can we actually build xtra...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know man. Belgians seem to embrace their parking problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnKoGN2oaTk

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I don't normally have claustrophobia, but this would make me so nervous about the car puttering out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That episode was amazing. Good old "man bites dog".

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whoa. I thought I had seen it all in Japan.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You underestimate the power of spite.

10 years ago | Likes 521 Dislikes 2

diet spite may only have half the power but at least its got twice the caffeine.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read that as "the pile of spite" which still works actually.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and the narrow streets of Belgium

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a pretty good spite story if ya'll are interested. its kinda long though...

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes! Post it! Then pm me / post the link. Imgur loves stories.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, he said in another article he's now making this thing automated.

10 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 0

I was going to say fuck me put the ramp permanent and automate the door

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But when can they check off enough boxes to call that a garage door?

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

When it doesnt look like a window anymore?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing the door wasn't the issue it's the fact he has his car inside his house.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Nope, it's Belgium they care a whole bunch about how their cities look. They probably thought a garage door wouldn't fit in

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He could have just put in a glass garage door and called it a window then.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
