At least the bird is okay

The number of people not understanding this comic is proof that our education systems have failed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 5

It is.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh man

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Miners used to use birds to detect lethal gasses. If the bird died, the miners would clear out. The bird is holding its breath, so they die.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Toxic gas was and still is a threat in mines so miners brought birds into the mines because they die faster from the gas.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Since the bird held its breath he did not die so the miners did not know. I could be wrong too, but I'm pretty sure I got it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I honestly have no idea wth is going on and it's taking forever for me to understand, can someone olease explain?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

They used to put bird in mines to see if there was toxic chemicals

Man this post is so dark, Oh wait my screen was off.

10 years ago | Likes 253 Dislikes 4

It was almost as dark as the mine shaft all those miners died in.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

More impressed how you managed to type the comment w/o a screen.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Maybe?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don't get it. Someone can explain?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Miners used to keep a canary in the mine. If toxic gases seeped into mine, the poor canary would die, and then the miners could escape.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Canaries are used to test for lethal gas leaks in mines

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Were.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Fair enough

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They have monitoring equipment now that detects gas leaks better than a bird dying.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'd imagine they've progressed somewhat alright

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well this is inappropriate for miners.

10 years ago | Likes 1108 Dislikes 2

Totes appropriate for miner birds though. Little fuckers.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Came back to up vote you.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I'd like to take time to recognize InflatableDancingMan for his proper spelling of the verb "damn" despite its conjugation.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Miners used to use canaries to detect any gas leaks, as the gas would kill the small bird before it could kill the large miners.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Take a dip, the mediocrity is fine

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Maybe this will help: that bird is a canary.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Still dont get it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Canaries were historically used by miners to act as a warning when they hit a poisonous or suffocating gas pocket, by dying first.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You are a gentleman and a scholar

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, OP, your words fill me with mediocrity.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 10

...

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Anything?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Using canaries to detect gas leaks is not common knowledge. There is absolutely no reason your hint would have helped anyone.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Canaries were used in mines to detect gas leaks. The bird is holding it's breath so it doesnt breathe in the gas.

10 years ago | Likes 250 Dislikes 0

Christ.. A fact i actually know, but had forgotten.. For you my good man/lady, an upvote for your help :)

10 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 1

No problem!

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I thought they were used for detecting when there was not enough oxygen. Was gas a problem in a gold mine?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mostly they were used as carbon monoxide detectors by coal miners.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its* :D

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The lesson here is don't imgur and class. It's impossible to pay full attention to both.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You rebel, you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But wouldn't the miners actually escape if the canary stopped singing? That's the whole point right?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No idea what is going on and its been solid 2 minutes ive been trying to figure this out..

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe this will help: that bird is a canary.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Nope, im a potato today.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well then: Miners used to use canaries to warn them of gas leaks in mines. If there was one, the bird would die from gas.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Uh..I refuse to believe that is common knowledge

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now i feel twice as potato than before.
