Didn’t MTV die like two years ago?

Yo ho ho and a bottle of piracy!

So - TikTok and a bunch of cable stations.

This is media consolidation. Might be oligarchy, but the real issues is single point of control over the media, which is caused by lax FCC rules around mergers.

But - there's more than that. This is Ellison's kid, right? The crypt-keeper hisself.

... Why'd he leave us off the list?!

So finally we'll only have one streaming service.

Until the antitrust breakup.

solutioin?

They need to be broken up and sold off. In fact, many of these bloated corporate monstrosities need to be broken up for the people's benefit.

Good. I don't watch any of them

And their money comes from Oracle, which is massively over leveraged now because they are run by idiots who fell for the AI scam.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I suspect they'll do a lot of damage, but they way over extend themselves and will have to parcel off services once the bubble pops

I thought we came up with anti-trust laws to prevent these types of monopolies. Too bad Congress can't [won't] enact laws that close all the loopholes the corporate lawyers keep finding.

Ronald Reagan.

All problems with GOP today can be traced to Ronald Reagan.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The executive branch enforces anti trust law. So…. Oh well.

the DOJ should ... and its never been as partisan as now. Fuck Bondi and Trump!

Do the Ellisons actually have the money?

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

They do, but worse than that, they have credit.

2 weeks ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Unpopular opinion with billionaires: once one has achieved multi-billion status, bank credit should be denied and deemed unnecessary.

Here here

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's not unpopular at all.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the general population, yes. Among billionaires specifically, no.

Wut? More reruns...? Noooooo

Seriously, their solution to piracy is to make stuff that's not even worth pirating.

The government in control of all media. Reminds me of book that I can’t quite put my finger on……

Probably not allowed to have it anymore but hey, look up Huxley.

I was thinking more along the lines of 1984…

No, not that one. The good one.

Boycott them all.

Im afraid its going to take something more... drastic to fix this shit.

Physical media collection is back. Books, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, and existing iTunes libraries don't rely on any of these monopolies. Boycott the profiteers, kick out the propaganda michine.

Keeping the player-hardware maintained is the biggest challenge.

I'm still digital but the server is mine so I can stream it whenever and wherever I want. And it takes up almost no room

I have a NAS full of backups of everything I own, and nearly full libraries of every videogame console I own. Plus a copy of the entire Gutenberg archive of public domain books, Wikipedia, and some other bits and pieces that might come in handy. Just gotta figure out a semi-portable solar charging solution in case shit really hits the fan over here so I can actually charge all that crap.

I’ve been repurchasing books, and albums. Video games. Things I’m going to need to have access to at night when it gets too dark to forage the bombed out cites.

Never gave mine up because after all the video stores exploded, 2nd-hand stores were flooded with old rental movies that the GF started snapping up, which came in handy once her MS reached a severity that prohibited her from leaving the cabin. Also we both collected books, kept all our college texts plus all the vinyl we ever had since childhood, in addition to huge cassette collections. She's gone now unfortunately but her legacy lives on. My nephew thinks I'm nuts & he's quite right of course.

Had a friend who's blu-ray player died a while back. Basically couldn't replace it. The options were really cheap stuff that broke in 6 months or buying an xbox.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a friend who relocated to the UK but before he left he dumped a bunch of things in my lap that won't work with their power grid. He was starting a dream project of becoming a party DJ & had bought 2 turntables which were still unopened, shipped in from Taiwan. Probably not as good as my Sony, but it's nice to have backups. I have a lot of records to play.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Couldn't replace it? How so, as I just looked it up and all the big brands still make them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The cheap ones were the brand name, they got replacements on warranty and those broke too.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Most big brands use cheap and unreliable internal drives. The last good manufacturer, pioneer, has stopped producing theirs last year. Though you can still get a lot of third-party ones using pioneer drives in their products, for example verbatim has a bunch of affordable external ones with unlocked pioneer drives in them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well everyone uses cheap and unreliable parts, but if they are still being made then they are still available. Dunno, maybe I'm misinterpreting a valid complaint from the other poster as a conspiracy theory.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He did mention the only options were cheap ones that would break quickly, which isn't wrong as there were quite a few differences in longterm reliability between manufacturers. As said pioneer was generally one of the best options for drives that work very well and are very reliable over many, many years without requiring servicing/replacing.
