Mara Grabrilli is a politician from Brazil. She travelled to the US to try out new exoskeleton technology to assist with her mobility.

She's gonna end up shooting a guy in the dick

I'm still wondering when we're going to just be able to grow and install a new spine like they did with Worf... My lower back would appreciate it.

The threat of a teetering plastic barrel looms over us all, eventually.

Her insta, using translate (1 of 2): On the one hand, the first marathon I did in my life. On the other, my first steps after 28 years without walking. Testing the exoskeleton made me go back to the past, when I ran marathons & ultramarathons. The voices of the past & the voices of now come to the fore: go, Mara, only another 100m, only another 50m, you can do it! The greatest privilege & stimulus I can have to keep moving is to realize that I haven't lost anything from Mara back there. On the...

(2 of 2)...contrary, I am grateful to have the opportunity to be more. A tetra who does not stop and who has not lost hope of rescuing more and more movements. This struggle of mine is also for other Brazilians to have the possibility of accessing this type of technology & more access to quality rehabilitation. #PraCegoVer #PraTodosVerem: montage with 2 photos of Mara. On left, old photo of Mara running a marathon on the street. On right she is standing on the exoskeleton

She looks so happy. Neat.

I've been through something similar & I've seen people who suffer from similar ailments. Being able to move a muscle/do any activity is a win as big as a major life achievement. So, it's always a happy moment.

If I could afford them, I'd be buying two. One for my DMD son and one for my hemiplegic best friend.

And she has every reason to be! Mobility is vitally important to physical AND mental health both (and both of those impact each other too). Things like this can have big ramifications.

I want TWO. One for my DMD son and one for my hemiplegic best friend.

I too have hemiplegia but I've mostly recovered with some loss of dexterity. Have they tried robotic arm or something like that? It's too costly in my country.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Too costly here unless you can get the need documented enough. Having one working arm disqualifies you. My friend recovered basically nothing. He's the youngest person in the nursing home and loathes it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What the hell! Of course, there's a need. There are so many things that cannot be done with one hand, even if the hemiplegic hand is mostly working, like in my case. It's such a less understood issue. At least, people with other forms of disability can still somehow function. It's so difficult when the signals don't reach the body parts.

Where is this? About 10 years ago my son interned at university of Houston working on an exoskeleton to help paralyzed people walk. They were working on a direct nerve to mechanical sensor but even with manual control, the psychological benefits of just being able to walk again were incredible. This is the future for geriatric care and really want to see this continue. Support this research!

Sitting kills. Half the biology in our bodies assumes that we walk for it to work.. diggestion, lymphe transfer, etc.

It's in France, this startup started producing these 3-5 years ago. It's way past the first research stage.

Thanks to your son's incredible work. My dad's condition makes him unable to get up and walk. All he asks for is one chance to be able to stand and take a few steps. You must be very proud.

My son was just interning at a research lab at UH. They already have a prototype for saline gel electrodes to interpret nerve signals to drive the electromechanical “muscles”. What my son was working on was a crown fitting of electrodes that had probes that would slide through hair and make significant signal connections to allow people to use without having to have their head shaved

Wow that's incredible I'll wish him success. His work is literally helping better mankind.

I feel like we’re closer to being able to cure being paralyzed than we are from creating a viable exoskeleton.
