This is a PSA about psoriasis and a treatment that actually works.
The tl;dr: There's a new drug on the market called Taltz that was approved by the FDA in March this year. It's an injection treatment that works and won't screw with your immune system (too much) like previous drugs will. The before picture on the left was taken on August 28, and the after picture on the right was taken on Oct. 9. As I understood it through my dermatologist and the drug company, Taltz works by targeting the parts of the immune system that cause psoriasis to flare up, and suppresses them, rather than just carpet bombing your whole immune system. That's a layman's understanding, but it's good enough for me. Although I've been sick since I've been on this drug, I don't think it was because my immune system was compromised by the drug because I recovered in about a week and a half.
If you or someone you know has this bogus disease, go to your dermatologist and ask about Taltz.
The tl;wr:
I've dealt with psoriasis for about 13 years now. It started with a small scab that I first noticed on my right shin during PE in the 7th grade, and I knew something was funny when it never went away. When I started getting bad dandruff at 16, I went to the dermatologist and psoriasis was diagnosed. It eventually grew to cover both legs, arms, my scalp and odd parts of my shoulders and torso. My case is a particularly aggressive one, which means that all other treatments and home remedies before Taltz failed.
Last year, I also developed psoriatic arthritis that put me in an immeasurable that I had never dealt with before. I could barely walk for a month, and had to be put on painkillers because any movement of my neck felt like getting stabbed.
Psoriasis is far more than a skin condition, and almost always assumed to be eczema by someone who doesn't know me. What psoriasis essentially is, though, is a genetic autoimmune disease that causes your immune system to go haywire. That's why the skin in my before pic looks scaly, and although I don't have a pic of my scalp before, it was pretty much the same up there. The inflammation inherent in an overactive immune system can also develop into arthritis in a very small percentage of cases, which I learned from a fancy dermatologist in Santa Monica basically means I won the "sucks to be you" lottery when it comes to this disease.
Not only is it unsightly for the people who have to deal with those of us with this disease, we can be in almost constant pain. That's because the sores we have will itch and we'll scratch them (caught myself doing this in my sleep a lot) or crack from dryness, and cause nearly constant bleeding. This also means our risk of bloodborne infection goes through the roof. Did I mention the arthritis?
There's also the mental anguish of people staring at your sores, and the most well-meaning yet offensive people will offer some stupid remedy that involves burning sage and reciting incantations. Trust me, if the topical steroids I was prescribed weren't doing it, reciting Sim Sala Bim ain't going to work either. But people will also stare at you like you're unclean or have a flesh-eating bacteria, which you might suggest to the 10th person you encounter who decides to go out of his or her way to comment on your condition. In case you missed it, I wrote before this is a genetic autoimmune disease. So unless you're my child, you're golden.
Dating with psoriasis also sucks, because talking about it to someone you've just met feels like it's just a notch above disclosing that you have an STD. I'm not saying it's actually that serious, but to me it always felt like that. You know at SOME point she's gonna wanna know why you have a bright red line above your forehead like someone ordered a napalm strike across your hairline. After the first girl cringes at the word "disease," you find ways of prefacing it as much as possible in the future with assurance that they can't get it. Boy, are people relieved that they can't get it. I've been fortunate that everyone I've ever dated has been very outwardly understanding, and only ended up disgusted by my personality and not my disease.
Anyway, I've been on Taltz for only a month. In that time, it's nearly reversed the damage that 13 years of psoriasis has done. The arthritic pain is gone in all but a joint in my left thumb, and all I have left of the constant sores are just large scars. For once in longer than a decade, I feel somewhat normal, and it's nice.

You can also use coconut oil for this. I got my gf to do it and it went away in a just a couple of months.

Psoriasis is 'fun'! Getting kicked out of pools and shunned in public areas, goes well with my constant itchiness and psoriatic arthritis.

Bio Oil might help with the scarring, but congrats on finding a treatment that works.
DamnBrainage
Hey OP, Thanks for this post. I am also afflicted with this totally awesome disease. I have been self treating for years, gonna look into it
giminyrickets
The real cure is just getting more UV exposure.
WhatWhAAAt1
I know the feeling of pain from Psoriasis all to well. Thanks for the post OP. I'll be looking into Taltz very soon.
fitlex
I've never had any pain from Psoriasis apart from having the skin so scabbed thick it needs a handful of moisturiser to even move your face

1/2 Wow. This is almost identical to my psoriasis. I've done everything, had it since I was born, etc. It's been so bad that I haven't been
Jewelsparklepants
2/2 able to work for weeks (I have it on my feet, so I can't walk). I have really bad depression/anxiety, also, so it's been a terrible.

Wow, that's almost a play-by-play of my psoriasis (~15 years of it now). I'll definitely look into Taltz. Most of the drugs freak me out.
strangelyarousingballoonanimal
Have psoriasis as well, but it's not this severe. It's temperamental at best, but joint pain is common. Thanks for th e awareness, OP.
thedeafbarista
My hubby is registered disabled from his PA and on a similar drug but it's miles better than how he was (100% coverage and paralysed)
thedeafbarista
As for dating he was very scared but you will find the right person who isn't stupid enough to believe it's a contagious disease :)

Breastmilk!!! Best part of leaky boobs is no more red belly.
raskim7
Awesome! There's also one coming soon for severe eczema, "dupilumab". Seems promising, It's not fun taking steroids for "skin condition"
Furryboots
Do you have to take the drug your entire life or only when clearing a flare up? Any side reactions with sun? Honest no joke questions.
MisterPharmacist
You have to take it your whole life. But the dosage will decrease, and you only have to do it once per month.
Provel
Some medications don't react well to sunlight
Provel
The condition doesn't matter
Cameronkip
I have severe Psoriasis, and I was on a shot called Stelara. Would have had one twice a year my whole life, and they were 5k/shot (1/2)
Cameronkip
Also http://www.goodrx.com/taltz
Cameronkip
There was no adverse reaction with the sun, but Mine tends to flare up during the winter, and recede during the summer.
fitlex
UV light actually improves psoriasis, which is why it gets worse in winter
Furryboots
No. some of the creams weaken the skin making it more susceptible and fragile in uv light.
HeavyDoots
It improves the skin symptoms. It does absolutely nothing to the IL-17 cytokines that Taltz neutralizes.
suckmywits
Unfortunately psoriasis is so tricky because what completely clears it for some, does nothing for other. Making it entirely trial and error.
missastromccluskey
Hi there from Australia! I've had Psoriasis for since I was a kid - have been on a 5 yr drug trial for a now TGA approved Cosentyx. 1/2
missastromccluskey

I've been dealing with Psoriasis for many years too. Most effective treatment for me was last year doing phototherapy. I had no 1/?
fitlex

fitlex
at the end of a few months treatment I was clearer than I'd ever been in my life, plus I had a great tan. And after about a year my skin 3/?
fitlex

fitlex
Have not been on any other medication apart from some steroid creams to keep down the flareups
RingSting
I went the diet route to cure mine. It seems to be a sign my body is struggling for me, I stop eating shit and take up a psoriasis diet (1)
RingSting
...and it completely disappears in about 6 weeks. Grats on finding something to heal yourself dude, it's a terrible condition (2).
sirstrumalot
Same here - chronic for years and focused on food sensitivities and gut repair. Now it's gone. Not sure why this approach is ignored.
lookitsj5
any good reads on what you did? asking for myself.

sirstrumalot
Nope. Heal the gut - no dairy, gluten, spicy food, and nightshade-family plants. Probiotics, digestive enzymes, Low-carb diet. >30 days.
sirstrumalot
Look into the Autoimmune protocol diet (AIP). Gluten, dairy, nightshade-families, and eggs are common triggers. In my case, it was gluten.
meikat
Diet has helped mine, but it's still horrible. I've tried avoiding every type of food and I still have 70% coverage. I need meds.
RingSting
Some people are just stuck with it sadly. Besides diet - Smoking, being overweight, stress, being run-down and drinking will encourage it.
meikat
Don't smoke, I do my best to manage stress, but it's hard when you're majorly disabled. I rarely drink, and I get plenty of sleep. :\
RingSting
Some people just get a shitty lot in life, hope you find some relief. =)
RingSting
...pretty much every holiday I get pissed the whole week, then bam two weeks later like clockwork it's back. Hope you get it sorted. =(
