The Netherlands mapped by over 1.2 million canals, rivers and streams, and over 120,000 lakes and ponds. This map contains over 70,000 km (43,000 miles) of canals and rivers alone!

Canals are plotted by size (from 0.5 to 6m wide). All data plotted with QGIS using GIS data for rivers, streams, lakes and canals from the TOP50NL 1:50000 scale mapping product (freely available online under the CC-BY-4.0 license; https://www.pdok.nl/nl/producten/pdok-downloads/basisregistratie-topografie/topnl/topnl-actueel/top50nl)

Flevoland in the central Netherlands, built almost entirely on reclaimed from the (now non-existant) Zuiderzee bay

7,8/10 too much water

To be fair, these would be nice and useful if you're a school in The Netherlands.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In middle school, The geography book had a question like: describe your hometown's history from 50 years ago. Answer: wet with lots of fish

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I guess dutch mappers got bored as they couldn't use any contour lines :) +1 for map porn!

French saying: God made the earth, except for the Netherlands, they made that themselves

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I live on one of those waters, on a house boat. That is how we Dutch cope with rising water levels, we just rise with them. Problem solved!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love the Netherlands!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you for finding my friend's Christmas present, she loves the Netherlands!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bjoetifoel!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Where are these posters available?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

huh. Only realized now that I never lived anywhere further than 10 meter from a body of water in this country. This kinda explains it!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a simple man. I see my country, I like. Good job OP!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I wonder if Physical or downloadable posters are available on Etsy...

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Cool how you can see the Schiphol runways.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a dutchy can confirm it's wet here

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"See this, kids? Everything in blue is the enemy."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a crack on the top of me screen that made me think the title was "Netherlands mapped by its cannabis streams..." I confused

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Now if only there was a way to obtain Physical posters of these. Hell, I would even settle with downloadable ones. So sad.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can you get posters of these from etsy?

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

I don't think so, no.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Probably not, otherwise links would have been provided.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Shame though, would have loved to have one.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I can see my house from here!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How little does the world seas have to rise before NL is fucked?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No sea rise needed, just a lack of floods. The less floods there are, the more the money for keeping the Dykes intact is decreased.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have prepared for that. We can close off the sea from our rivers. Currently we're planning a 2.0 for future protection of high water.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

they have a whole seperate political system just to govern these

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Rijkswaterstaat, which doesn't only do water infrastructure, but also roads, public works, flood protection and prevention & railroads.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes, but there are also 21 Water boards (‘waterschappen’), the oldest dates from the year 1255.

Old saying: "The Lord made the Earth, but the Dutch made Holland".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The correct saying is; “And as a final touch, God created the Dutch.....”

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I really wish QGIS was the same format as ESRI ArcGIS like Open Office is with MS Office.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least for how many times arcmap crashes, when it doesn't it will let you load an excel table in

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't had a problem with ArcMap crashing. Interesting!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like including the word “land” in the name of the country was more aspirational than descriptive.

8 years ago | Likes 223 Dislikes 0

That's all bushes..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No because it translates to "lower countries" in reference to sea level. It's actually 100% accurate.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well 'Nethercanals' can lead to confusion sometimes...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Used to be way more land until the medieval warm period melted some artic ice and flooded large parts. Only then we began reclaiming it!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It also sounds way more ominous than it is. "I cast thee...to THE NETHER-LANDS!!!"

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a Dutchman, proclamations like that always get me.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What would you prefer? The Netherrealms?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, and I will be using that from now on. Thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Legend says Kevin Costner is roaming the Netherland and tries to sell dirt.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

It says "lands" as in plural, and it is indeed basically many many lands. It is just a matter of perspective.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Comes from way back when it was known as the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neither land nor sea.. It seams.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, Nethercanals sounded a bit less appealing to some, I guess

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Considering we claimed an entire province from the water a century or so back, I completely agree with that.

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

The south part was reclaimed as early as 1968, so that's less than 50 years.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Even more than one, large parts of Zeeland, North and South Holland are reclaimed as well, but much longer ago.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not reclaimed. Just claimed.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

More like guidelines

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Giving a whole new meaning to "land grab".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a picture of the Netherlands in the near future:

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Ah! I see what you did there. Here's a +1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unlike the USA we do know how to keep the water out.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

i'm guessing you are from the Netherlands... good luck keeping that water out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in short if you can't swim by the age of 6 you are pretty much fucked

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

It was actually mandatory for us as kids to take swimming classes and earn swimming diplomas.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Not anymore sadly

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got my ABC and still had swimming classes in school afterwards. We take our water seriously.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I know i have had them ;) every Friday morning until you had A B and C

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And ice swimming

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I only have B. yeah, I know, confusing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Y'all are some thirsty motherfuckers

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Last european country to suffer a major famine, we take our food really serious.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That was not on us :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

World's biggest exporter for several veggies. Not per capita, actual numbers. We take it ridiculously serious.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Smart, food is of mild importance.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Almost as important as internet access! (that's why we were the 2nd nation in the wold with a network neutrality law)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

See that dry-ass part in the middle? No water at all? That's what I call; home.

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 1

@op wow i am a professional GIS user, these maps are garbage, i can't believe you are trying to sell these. put a fucking basemap on.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Veluwe for life tho...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The top left of the Groene Hart map looks like a roadmap of Manhattan

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm somewhere in the blue bit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Utrechtse Heuvelrug or Veluwe :-)

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Utrechtse Heuvelrug in mijn geval;)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same! :D

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Excuse me sir but that is not how you effectively use a semicolon.

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

why; not?

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Yeah, a quartercolon should be sufficient for this purpose.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And are capable of properly explaining a correct and consistent usage of the semicolon?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Semicolons are used to link two clauses. Clauses must have a subject and predicate; home is merely a subject.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Boom.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Anyone live here? I'll be visiting in December! :D

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amersfoort, look it up, stay away.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stay away?...well that makes me want to go

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're into art, come visit Rotterdam. We have this!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that a...giant dildo?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. That's Santa Claus with his wife's buttplug.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live near Utrecht, in the middle of the country. Great place to explore the Netherlands from as you can reach everything in no time.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What are some of your favorite places?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The area west of Utrecht city and south of Amsterdam has some of the most typical Dutch landscapes you'll ever see as well.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Utrecht, Amersfoort, Deventer and Maastricht are all cities I like. The Veluwe and Heuvelrug (Mostly the dry area on the map) are beautiful.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure! Though, ‘here’ is kinda generic. Hope you’ll enjoy it! You are free to ask questions if you like.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We are actually staying in Belgium, but wanted to see what cool things were in the Netherlands. Any non-touristy areas you recommend?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you like an old city, which still looks awesome and isn't even as busy as Utrecht try Amersfoort. It's great and exactly in the middle.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instead of Amsterdam, go to Utrecht, way less tourists than Amsterdam

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Staying inline with this post I'd suggest the 'delta works', which is an impressive piece of Dutch engineering to keep the sea out of here.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in Maastricht, can recommend some things if you want to, PM me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Delft and The Hague are beautiful places to go.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ditto for Leiden. It's like a smaller and less busy version of Amsterdam. Also the alma mater of Einstein and Churchill

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go to province limburg and visit maastricht, it has caves and what not. in belgium go to brugges

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Always down for some cave diving lol thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Groningen! Beautiful city.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Recommended stops in Groningen?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you wanna see? It IS the city that never sleeps. It isnt as big as amsterdam but a lot cheaper ( and friendlier) its a student city

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So also very international ( everybody speaks englisch) with a lot of history, museums and nightlive ( bars are almost open 24/7)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We really are down for anything (especially museums and nature) what's a popular spot for locals (local restaurants or entertainment)?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For local restaurants. Hm depends where you go.if you go to the main city of Groningen I can recommend some.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want nature I would go to drenthe or lauwersoog. (Drents museum is also a must) in Drenthe you got the hunebedden.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come and visit The Netherlands, just make sure you don't (only) visit Amsterdam, come take a look in Amersfoort, Leiden, northern parts etc.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I was wanting to stay away from the touristy areas. Any cool local restaurants/museums/parks/etc in Leiden or Amersfoort?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you like beer visit de drie ringen in Amersfoort, it's near the koppelpoort which is beautiful, walk through the langestraat and go 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

off the path a bit there, beautiful old city centre. If you like Mondriaan there's the Mondriaanhouse in Amersfoort, it's a museum 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's also Kamp Amersfoort, which is a concentration camp. There's some parks in the city like Randenbroek. Tho you might want to 3/x
