I made a blacksmithing furnace out of a tire I found at the beach

Nov 29, 2016 12:37 PM

I'm 18 year old dude from Iceland and I'm planning to be a blackSmith someday. bu Iceland there are no open blacksmithing workshops and Olmost no way to learn it since last open work shop closed down a some years ago. so I'm currently just watching online videos and researching but this Christmas I'll graduate from school as a "Stálsmiður" (it majors in heavy welding and knowledge of working in a steel workshop)

So I made my first blacksmith furnace the other day out of an old tire from the beach and some scraps from work. I haven't had the chance to test it but it should reach temperatures of about 1500°C (enuf to get steel glowing red)
the legs and bottom pipes can be removed so that it's easyer to transport but other than that I'm just exited to have made it after planning this for so long and cant wait to take it for a test run.

I've made alot of other cool things in the past but haven't really had the nerv to post any of them. please let me know if you want to see more of my small builds :3

I need pictures of it in use!

What are you going to use for a blower? Also, charcoal forges can get hot enough to melt steel, not just red.

Yeah I'm planning on using a hair dryer as my air supply x3

*wheel/rim not tire. I think a tire might make everything go up in smoke.

Your post says "heavy welding". Your welds and lack of surface cleaning say amature at best.

Yeah I started welding two years ago. get of my back

Oh yeah, the old wheel forge. That's how a bunch of people I know (and myself) started. Yours is much neater though. Have fun and good luck!

thanks :3 I have ideas for a way better forge but this is what I can do for now. I'm just happy I made one

See if you can find some firebrick from like a housing contractor (chimney bricks that can handle a lot of heat). 'Made mine from them.

Yeah that was one of my ideas but I was thinking of making a propane forge so it would be easyer turn use and could be turned on and off.

This is literally every part of a wheel without the tire...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes it will be, I was just curious as to which route you were going. Furnace looks great! Please post some of your work and best of luck!

https://youtu.be/hRrG0Q0OKQc this isn't the best method but it will work just fine for what you're doing. Best of luck!

There are videos on YouTube that show you how to make charcoal. I'll try to find a video and link it to you. It's very simple
