All orders should be given to a human. So many people getting cakes that say "Happy Birthday on both," or getting a burger wrapper full of ketchup, or none left beef pizza would have been resolved if you had said that shit to a human being. "Ok you're *sure you want NO meat or bun? Yeah that's what I thought I'll put just ketchup, good thing I checked." Or "You want just a crust with beef on one side? Let me read that back... That's correct? You're sure? Ok buddy you do you.'

I don't think I can come with you on old games being better, there are a ton of great new games every year these days. They're just rarely coming from the AAA space. Most indie games aren't as infected by the drive for increased profits and so are free to just do cool shit.
I can’t disagree, either. I feel like this has been the golden age for indie games. Omori, A Space for the Unbound, DDLC, Cuphead, Undertale, etc etc. Well, especially Omori. I’ve always wanted to try that out. These days, I just care more about fighting and, to some extent, WWE games when it comes to AAA stuff, especially SF6 and anything related to SNK games. I legit wish more ppl actually played the new Fatal Fury. It looks solid, yet it still flops harder than MK1 :/
Socialism. The workers own the means of production and share in all profits from it. The point of capitalism is to make as much money as possible, regardless of the effort or effect. To essentially consolidate wealth to a few individuals. That is capitalism. Want more profit? Work the people to death, and they always have more children to exploit. I am not going to spend my life going from crappy job to crappy job so that someone can get more wealth as the only driving factor. Fuck that.
"Real existing socialism", the economic system in eg the GDR was probably worse in other ways, but it didn't have these problems. And not only because there was no internet then and there, but also because durability and meeting the needs of the people was valued higher than making profits. The system failed, because it failed to actually find out what the needs of the people were (plus because the West deliberately sabotaged it.)
And that's not me defending the GDR or its economic or political system. It was nice as a reference point that there is indeed an alternative, and many workers' rights were won because the sheer existence of the Eastern Bloc was a threat unions could use as wager. Other than that, it belongs to the same trash of history as capitalism.
To prioritize the actual needs of the people - as communities and as individuals - and the planet over corporate greed is absolutely possible, and even works in systems that are closer to market economy than to socialism.
My public (as in public radio) health insurance offers a possibility to digitally submit forms and download info. I need a proprietary app that doesn't work on linux or custom android OSs to authenticate to that service, so I'll have to stick to fax and physical letters.
But that's why TVs are so cheap! ...I hate it too, a TV shouldn't need to reboot and shove me into menus if it loses a connection. It also shouldn't be able to UNPAUSE ITSELF when it was in the screensaver/ad display mode, jumpscaring anyone in the room because my parents can't turn off the TV, they just pause stuff and forget they were watching it but that's another issue--
Just because a TV is a smart TV doesn't mean you have to use any of the smart functions. You don't have to connect it to the internet, which would render the smart systems inoperative anyway. And AFAIK none of them have the actual smart assistant built in, they just are prepped for seamless connection to become a talk point for one, if you set it up. Source -- I sell these things
This. I purchased my own box that I understand what it does and how it connects better than whatever "smart" shit is built in. Roku usually. And it usually works much better with fewer problems
You could also just limit access to the internet through a device between the TV and the outside world (firewall, some routers) and use the local features but nothing "in the cloud"
The Alphas are here, and these are considered "old person" traits to them
hell, I'm 54 and while I don't feel (or act or smell) old, I got wrinkles and silver hair here and there. Objectively I'm old because I'm sure and certain I'm halfway or more through life.
There is likely an open position. They just don't want to fill it because the team is keeping up (mostly), or they just need it posted long enough to get an h1b slave.
I just got an e-mail confirming that they have received my application. I have no idea when I applied, but it was more than a month ago because that's when I accepted my current job...
At one of the companies I worked for I got an automated email saying they'd rejected my application. Called up my boss and asked him if that was his weird ass way of telling me I was fired, cause I'd been there for *months* at that point. But nah, it was the recruiter chick just mass deleting all the 'old' applications, mine was sitting there cause I was kinda sideways hired instead of their usual process.
I received a "sorry, we chose someone else at this time" rejection email from Target 4 YEARS after I originally applied. I've also received the rejection template email they use when the manager just fills in the applicant's name and then they send it out. Then, one year later, another email saying they sent the template email out in mistake. These are the only rejection emails I ever received out of hundreds of applications sent out.
Yeah there's definitely some fucky stuff in a lot of companies' recruiting departments and they don't seem to care about fixing it. I'm helping overhaul the procedures and system processes at my work because they haven't been doing a particularly good job at some of this stuff.
One thing I'm pushing HARD for is that everyone receives at least 2 communications: an email acknowledging their app was received, and an email if they don't get the job. Basic communication that should always be done.
the last one has gotten so bad. 99% of companies have people who can't speak english well and have to read from a script, the most basic issue takes fucking forever to resolve
I mean, most of the time you do get someone that speaks English well, but has an accent that makes it harder to understand. As for scripting, that's what they do now for a couple of reasons - same experience for everyone, and so that anyone could do the job. However, it also makes it so that no one can really figure out /why/ something is wrong. I see this a lot in the IT world. The serviceless desk can't solve a simple problem because they don't really know IT and just repeat or link articles.
Or they don't actually have access if it's something that requires access, and they have no way to contact someone who does have access except tell you they'll submit a ticket and hope someone calls you back eventually.
I joined Lebara mobile because their ads said 100% UK based. I tried to call the Tax office and got a message that said extra charges would be incurred if I continued with the call, so I called them. A call handler, who spoke next to no English, said phoning the tax office 15 miles from me would incur international roaming charges.
Not bill related, nor was on the phone long, but rather customer support related. I was trying to regain access to an account for a video game that I hadn't played on in some years. Tried password recovery, was told to get in contact with support, so I e-mailed, and was told I needed to call.
I felt so embarrassed when I did, I had to ask the man to repeat himself so many times because I was struggling to understand what he was saying. He had the thickest Indian accent I've ever heard.
Had an issue with Marcos pizza and an online order. They absolutely do not have a customer service number. And their physical locations do not have the ability to help you at all. I’m done with them possibly forever.
"Sludge." The longer it takes to resolve an issue, the more likely it is you'll give up. Ever get disconnected from a customer service call? The call-center guys are rated by how many call they handle per hour - meaning they're rewarded for hanging up on you.
I've been with my current ISP for only a few weeks and had to contact them via their chat thingy to cancel an appointment because it wasn't necessary - something that should have been trivial. I got reminders for the appointment twice and contacted them each time to ensure that it should have been cancelled.
It was never cancelled and some guy turned up to an appointment where there was no issue to fix.
I'm not entirely convinced the agent on the other end was a real person each time - it could well have been some shitty AI Yesbot. I'm more inclined to think the agents *couldn't* cancel the appointment without escalating, but wanted the good customer service review at the end, so just straight up lied the whole time.
I think you misunderstood the context here. I'm someone from an English speaking country, calling an English-speaking company's customer service, with an English-speaking country's phone number, of course they should speak my English.
Just as you calling someone from your country would expect them to speak your language. If you called customer service for a Norwegian company and they could not speak Norwegian, you would be in the same situation I am in.
For the sake of pedantry: in the case of Norway the customer service person would have to neither speak Norwegian or English for the situation to match since every Norwegian is at least bilingual. It's not unusual there for customer service to not speak Norwegian, without it really being an issue. Granted, that probably just makes eggmuffin's comment even more moronic.
You'll wait for AI to be created first. We're only at the stage of algorithms that are polished enough to be labeled AI. In this case, a fancy phone tree where you have to find the key search words instead of pushing 3 for accounting.
Most places I get onto you start with a basic AI bot. You then get an upgrade to a slightly better bot if your issue can't be resolved. If you request a manager specifically, maybe three times, you might get a human eventually. It takes forever.
"representative" to better assist you please choose from the following options *none of the options are relevant even slightly to your issue* "REPRESENTATIVE" okay! We are experiencing slightly longer wait times than usual, here's a 23 second clip of music played badly from another phone held up to a speaker, only to be interrupted by a thank you for waiting message on loop, your expected wait time is... 5 hours... Thank you!
Apparently so! I was having something repaired and the price of a part they put on the estimate was about 50% more than the price for that same part they advertise so I was trying to call for clarity before dropping $750.
The person I finally spoke to was able to inform me that there isn’t anyone left - no more departments with staff who can help me.
My old person trait is that I want to be able to buy things in stores and that I want those stores to have employees who can answer questions (and as a bonus I’d like those employees to be making money while working and none of this slave wage bs)
"insist upon" more like forced to. It's not like they have much choice, e-commerce/Amazon/Walmart have sucked almost all the oxygen out of the room. Their options are go out of business or skeleton staff
But you also want knowledgeable, well paid employees, thats not a big ask. I do believe in meritocracy. People who are really good deserve to get paid more. But it starts at a liveable wage and improves from there. What we have is a nonliveable wage and nepo people collecting disproportionate amounts of money for jobs that are bullshit, or even very detrimental to the company. No opportunity for real advancement or eventual retirement. 1/2
2/2 and don't get me started on health insurance in America, every time people complain about their insurance being connected to their jobs, I am the "you guys are getting X?" meme incarnate. You're obviously not fortunate but it just makes me sad cuz I ain't even getting insurance
Often the insurance offered is crap too. Yeah I'm insured, they'll cover HALF of my expenses up to a set amount, and then they'll cover the full amount of my expenses... Until a second amount. Then I get the middle finger. It's just enough for a basic medical emergency, but can't be a significant one... Just a middle emergency. Regular medical situations however I better have money set aside for because oof.
Also there's issue with lack of products. You might find stuff from online stores but actual stores don't have what you want or even what you need. That's at least what it feels like when I need something other than black socks or eggs. Want a specific type of jacket like dark wool? Can't be found. Want a another brand of ginger ale than the million cans of product B? Can't he found. Feels like stores push few products they want to push, and the rest you need to find yourself somewhere else
Many years ago I have made personal statistics of stuff I wanted to buy. I didn't get over 30% found in stores. And I was looking in a wide radius for specialist stores. So I just stopped going to stores completely, because I have to buy over 70% of the stuff I need online anyway. The reason of course is that here in Switzerland rent is fucking atrocious, so stores want to limit stocking area as much as they can. But this also reduces incentive to go to stores, because they have nothing in stock
It's optimizing for mediocrity. My local supermarket used to carry Dinosaur BBQ sauce! Its amazing. Then it dissapeared. We've got sweet baby rays, kc masterpiece, etcetc but they're all incredibly similar.
Like those are fine, but there is 10 square feet of "mostly corn syrup" and the one I like is gone because the slight amount of texture and glass bottle probably brought thr profit margins down a bit.
And it's not like it wasn't moving. People know bought it regularly, they just weren't as
M&A mania in soft drinks for example has screwed a lot of offerings. Hires root beer for one. Used to be available on the west coast, then vanished. Found it up in Canada (Kitchener/Waterloo area) back in 2005 so brought some back down here. Now? All but gone since the M&A/buyouts saddled the parent company with so many root beer brands they discontinued most of them and only have a few left in their sales offerings
My neighborhood grocery store of a local chain will order literally anything. I've asked for a specific beer and they have it stocked when I pick it up. They get like a pallet of it. If it sells, they make room for it. There are a lot of weird things that they keep in stock now, but that manager is retiring soon, so it may change.
We have that system here as well, but if there's not enough folks requesting product A, they will keep buying whatever the masses want and product A disappears from the shelves without the store ordering more, so it doesn't work, at least not in regular sized stores. Maybe in jumbo sized grocery stores it works better.
This was fine before. I hate how now trailers are clips from all the highlights and spoilers for the movies and all too often they ruin the movie by giving away all the good bits before you even watch it.
At least AMC tells you to come to the movies 30 minutes after the listed showtime. But I went to Regal and it was trailer after trailer then ad trailer after trailer.
Honestly, i kinda appreciate those because it’s the only place i see ads for upcoming movies i may wanna see. Now, the other ads that are legitimate commercials, that shit is stupid af. But i like the movie trailer ads
Much like HBO the channel didn't have "ads," I'm fine with HBO Max's previews before certain shows and movies. It doesn't annoy me as much when it's short, at the beginning, skip-able, and not trying to sell me stuff but just inform me of other material on the service.
Depends on who released the home video. I was pleasantly surprised last week-end when I watched a couple of Miss Marple -tapes. No ads because it's BBC.
Always… no, but no one alive to remember that time. Ads on VHS were skippable and just like on DVDs they were at the beginning, never ever in between McBain’s shooting scenes. And you paid for the movie once, not a subscription where you find a movie 2 months ago that you wanted to see, keep your subscription for when you have time only to find out it’s not in this month’s rotation.
These are things we had as normal things in capitalism.
The thing about capitalism is that it can kind of sort of usually work, as long as it remains well regulated. Enforcing that last part is the sticky bit.
Old person trait is still paying for cable, but also probably paying for a streaming service that's bundled with their cable service and never using it.
Yes they would. My granddad had sky tv from the 90s until he passed 5 years ago. It was mainly for the sport, but it had mgm movies, classic tv etc. Im 46 and i dont pay. Arrrghh matey, it's the high seas for me.
All of them? Like if I buy a television set, plug in an antenna and power lead, turn it on, and let it run an automatic channel search, I will end up with IDK 12 or so channels completely free. Three of them won't have any commercials at all because I live in a somewhat civilized country.
Oooh right. Other countries. America axed its over the air tv system a while ago. Now it's cable or satellite here. The cheapest TV option in my neighborhood is over $100/month for the barest minimum package, full of commercials. Hell some of the channels are just dedicated to commercials (infomercial channels) .
The providers need to be able to pay for content rights to distribute and also need to pay their employees. Ads have always served that purpose. So for free streaming services, I can accept that.
It seems so unimaginative that the entire internet is based on either advertising or data mining for use in advertising. Someone have a second idea please
If a service has to play borderline (or sometimes LITERAL) scams for their ads, the service deserves to fail. Before I got adblock on mobile, I got SCUMMY fuckin ads on youtube, including for megachurches run by millionaires. Known slave shops. The mobile game ads are sometimes worse, as it's obvious fetish material. I even got ads for /actual/ nazi candidates.
I don't care about ads for a movie or pizza place. Fine, whatever, I just muted those. Those were not the only ones people get though.

Fuck that.
FermentTheRich3000
Capitalism with regulation.
innagaddavidababy
That’s the answer in my mind, but it seems no one is talking about it.
LavaDiver1312
"Real existing socialism", the economic system in eg the GDR was probably worse in other ways, but it didn't have these problems. And not only because there was no internet then and there, but also because durability and meeting the needs of the people was valued higher than making profits. The system failed, because it failed to actually find out what the needs of the people were (plus because the West deliberately sabotaged it.)
LavaDiver1312
And that's not me defending the GDR or its economic or political system. It was nice as a reference point that there is indeed an alternative, and many workers' rights were won because the sheer existence of the Eastern Bloc was a threat unions could use as wager. Other than that, it belongs to the same trash of history as capitalism.
LavaDiver1312
To prioritize the actual needs of the people - as communities and as individuals - and the planet over corporate greed is absolutely possible, and even works in systems that are closer to market economy than to socialism.
2000000bees
This old person doesn't, but yeah idk what the fuck is wrong with my generation
Tyrannotron
I'm pretty old myself, and agree with you.
pareidoliaperson
My OPT is if I have to download your app to use your website then I'm not using your services. *cough* tiktok
LavaDiver1312
My public (as in public radio) health insurance offers a possibility to digitally submit forms and download info. I need a proprietary app that doesn't work on linux or custom android OSs to authenticate to that service, so I'll have to stick to fax and physical letters.
thelatebillstickers
Oh deer God I suddenly have to buy a new TV and trying to find something without all the bullshiat “smart” features is just about impossible.
I want my TV to be a TV not a surveillance device and/or bastion of cyber criminals in my home.
I am old.
FermentTheRich3000
I have a smart TV that's just not connected to the network. I use a roku for plex to my server, matey.
FatBastardVegetarian
That would be nice. There is no privacy anymore. My best defense is that i'm boring as hell.
MagicalScientist
But that's why TVs are so cheap! ...I hate it too, a TV shouldn't need to reboot and shove me into menus if it loses a connection. It also shouldn't be able to UNPAUSE ITSELF when it was in the screensaver/ad display mode, jumpscaring anyone in the room because my parents can't turn off the TV, they just pause stuff and forget they were watching it but that's another issue--
FrolickingFrolicking
TIP: get an Apple TV box, and turn off TV (display) “smart” (privacy invasion) features and NEVER connect it to internet.
There’s weird people who hate Apple but their products seem better to me on careful examination and comparison, though with some drawbacks
Supermanisbetter
Good luck!
PhailRaptor
Just because a TV is a smart TV doesn't mean you have to use any of the smart functions. You don't have to connect it to the internet, which would render the smart systems inoperative anyway. And AFAIK none of them have the actual smart assistant built in, they just are prepped for seamless connection to become a talk point for one, if you set it up. Source -- I sell these things
drinkthederpentine
This. I purchased my own box that I understand what it does and how it connects better than whatever "smart" shit is built in. Roku usually. And it usually works much better with fewer problems
Quixus
You could also just limit access to the internet through a device between the TV and the outside world (firewall, some routers) and use the local features but nothing "in the cloud"
WhattaMattahYou
My old person trait is that if someone is advertising an open position/job, there should be an actual fucking job they need a real person to fill.
And I think anyone who works 40 hours a week should not only have money for all the basics but also a good surplus of fun or luxury money.
It used to be that way - as recently as the 70's someone with a High School diploma could feed and house an entire family.
johnvictor
Why are we saying these are old person traits? These are the basics that should be happening, period.
WhattaMattahYou
The Alphas are here, and these are considered "old person" traits to them
hell, I'm 54 and while I don't feel (or act or smell) old, I got wrinkles and silver hair here and there. Objectively I'm old because I'm sure and certain I'm halfway or more through life.
FermentTheRich3000
There is likely an open position. They just don't want to fill it because the team is keeping up (mostly), or they just need it posted long enough to get an h1b slave.
KingORedLions
In the industry I work in, as many as 1 in 3 advertisements are assumed to be ghost jobs where there is no actual position to fill.
Astramancer
I just got an e-mail confirming that they have received my application. I have no idea when I applied, but it was more than a month ago because that's when I accepted my current job...
Bonana
At the beginning of June 2025, I finally got a rejection email for a posting I applied to in November 2024. Position still unfilled.
HymenTroubleNow
Makes ya wonder if it was one of those bullshit ghost listings... -_- I wish they wouldn't jerk us around and waste our time with that shit.
IHaveGreatKittenRecipes
At one of the companies I worked for I got an automated email saying they'd rejected my application. Called up my boss and asked him if that was his weird ass way of telling me I was fired, cause I'd been there for *months* at that point. But nah, it was the recruiter chick just mass deleting all the 'old' applications, mine was sitting there cause I was kinda sideways hired instead of their usual process.
HymenTroubleNow
I received a "sorry, we chose someone else at this time" rejection email from Target 4 YEARS after I originally applied. I've also received the rejection template email they use when the manager just fills in the applicant's name and then they send it out. Then, one year later, another email saying they sent the template email out in mistake. These are the only rejection emails I ever received out of hundreds of applications sent out.
Badprenup
Yeah there's definitely some fucky stuff in a lot of companies' recruiting departments and they don't seem to care about fixing it. I'm helping overhaul the procedures and system processes at my work because they haven't been doing a particularly good job at some of this stuff.
One thing I'm pushing HARD for is that everyone receives at least 2 communications: an email acknowledging their app was received, and an email if they don't get the job. Basic communication that should always be done.

I'd just like to have the time off at "normal hours" to experience life before I can't, without quitting my current spot.
RhymingEverything
the last one has gotten so bad. 99% of companies have people who can't speak english well and have to read from a script, the most basic issue takes fucking forever to resolve
LittleAzie
I mean, most of the time you do get someone that speaks English well, but has an accent that makes it harder to understand. As for scripting, that's what they do now for a couple of reasons - same experience for everyone, and so that anyone could do the job. However, it also makes it so that no one can really figure out /why/ something is wrong. I see this a lot in the IT world. The serviceless desk can't solve a simple problem because they don't really know IT and just repeat or link articles.
WarKittyKat
Or they don't actually have access if it's something that requires access, and they have no way to contact someone who does have access except tell you they'll submit a ticket and hope someone calls you back eventually.
ginarubyking7
I joined Lebara mobile because their ads said 100% UK based. I tried to call the Tax office and got a message that said extra charges would be incurred if I continued with the call, so I called them. A call handler, who spoke next to no English, said phoning the tax office 15 miles from me would incur international roaming charges.
BattleOwlGamer
Not bill related, nor was on the phone long, but rather customer support related. I was trying to regain access to an account for a video game that I hadn't played on in some years. Tried password recovery, was told to get in contact with support, so I e-mailed, and was told I needed to call.
I felt so embarrassed when I did, I had to ask the man to repeat himself so many times because I was struggling to understand what he was saying. He had the thickest Indian accent I've ever heard.
azgrak1
Had an issue with Marcos pizza and an online order. They absolutely do not have a customer service number. And their physical locations do not have the ability to help you at all. I’m done with them possibly forever.
copperdomebodhi
"Sludge." The longer it takes to resolve an issue, the more likely it is you'll give up. Ever get disconnected from a customer service call? The call-center guys are rated by how many call they handle per hour - meaning they're rewarded for hanging up on you.
KingORedLions
I've been with my current ISP for only a few weeks and had to contact them via their chat thingy to cancel an appointment because it wasn't necessary - something that should have been trivial. I got reminders for the appointment twice and contacted them each time to ensure that it should have been cancelled.
It was never cancelled and some guy turned up to an appointment where there was no issue to fix.
KingORedLions
I'm not entirely convinced the agent on the other end was a real person each time - it could well have been some shitty AI Yesbot. I'm more inclined to think the agents *couldn't* cancel the appointment without escalating, but wanted the good customer service review at the end, so just straight up lied the whole time.
eggmuffin
That may have something to do with how most languages are not English.
Why would I speak English at my work? I'm in Norway, so that wouldn't make sense outside niche fields.
RhymingEverything
I think you misunderstood the context here. I'm someone from an English speaking country, calling an English-speaking company's customer service, with an English-speaking country's phone number, of course they should speak my English.
Just as you calling someone from your country would expect them to speak your language. If you called customer service for a Norwegian company and they could not speak Norwegian, you would be in the same situation I am in.
Colopty
For the sake of pedantry: in the case of Norway the customer service person would have to neither speak Norwegian or English for the situation to match since every Norwegian is at least bilingual. It's not unusual there for customer service to not speak Norwegian, without it really being an issue.
Granted, that probably just makes eggmuffin's comment even more moronic.
KiraKira9
The niche field of "customer service to an english speaking customer base" is one the ones that /should/ require english.
eggmuffin
Sure. But that's not most places.
I poked at an American for talking as if they were some kind of global default. As they tend to do.
aidancfun
Ok but to be fair English is also the most spoken language globally with almost a quarter of the population speaking english
eggmuffin
As a second, third, or fourth language. Yes.
fastlaserjockey
Don't worry, it'll all be AI bots soon.
FermentTheRich3000
And with current data collection, it will sound like your mother.
RhymingEverything
Honestly a good AI might be better, maybe that's the point though: to set expectations low
FermentTheRich3000
You'll wait for AI to be created first. We're only at the stage of algorithms that are polished enough to be labeled AI. In this case, a fancy phone tree where you have to find the key search words instead of pushing 3 for accounting.
Ardranor
Yeah, kinda wished we had taken the VI term from Mass Effect, but that doesn't sell as well
Twinklepot
Most places I get onto you start with a basic AI bot. You then get an upgrade to a slightly better bot if your issue can't be resolved. If you request a manager specifically, maybe three times, you might get a human eventually. It takes forever.
intashu
"representative" to better assist you please choose from the following options *none of the options are relevant even slightly to your issue* "REPRESENTATIVE" okay! We are experiencing slightly longer wait times than usual, here's a 23 second clip of music played badly from another phone held up to a speaker, only to be interrupted by a thank you for waiting message on loop, your expected wait time is... 5 hours... Thank you!
Arbitrarynamehere
Practically memorized all the 30 second hold music loops at this point. Forced to listen to them for hours from my job.
I will say I appreciate companies that have actual playlists
MelfsAcidArrow
I spent over an hour today trying to get a human on the phone at Sears.
RhymingEverything
sears still exists?
MelfsAcidArrow
Apparently so! I was having something repaired and the price of a part they put on the estimate was about 50% more than the price for that same part they advertise so I was trying to call for clarity before dropping $750.
The person I finally spoke to was able to inform me that there isn’t anyone left - no more departments with staff who can help me.
IJustWantToMakeAComment
My old person trait is that I want to be able to buy things in stores and that I want those stores to have employees who can answer questions (and as a bonus I’d like those employees to be making money while working and none of this slave wage bs)
FermentTheRich3000
Ace hardware. Not sure about wages or benefits, tho.
albaboss
Dude it’s absolutely insane that this is so much to ask in today’s economic environment. Patrons just don’t get luxuries like this anymore!
IJustWantToMakeAComment
This sounds boomerish but I was really just complaining that stores have like no employees anymore because they insist on being understaffed
drinkthederpentine
"insist upon" more like forced to. It's not like they have much choice, e-commerce/Amazon/Walmart have sucked almost all the oxygen out of the room. Their options are go out of business or skeleton staff
EmporerDragon
Payroll is the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to cuts, as to corporate, treading water while understaffed means we didn't need the hours
GravyEducation
But you also want knowledgeable, well paid employees, thats not a big ask. I do believe in meritocracy. People who are really good deserve to get paid more. But it starts at a liveable wage and improves from there. What we have is a nonliveable wage and nepo people collecting disproportionate amounts of money for jobs that are bullshit, or even very detrimental to the company. No opportunity for real advancement or eventual retirement. 1/2
GravyEducation
2/2 and don't get me started on health insurance in America, every time people complain about their insurance being connected to their jobs, I am the "you guys are getting X?" meme incarnate. You're obviously not fortunate but it just makes me sad cuz I ain't even getting insurance
intashu
Often the insurance offered is crap too. Yeah I'm insured, they'll cover HALF of my expenses up to a set amount, and then they'll cover the full amount of my expenses... Until a second amount. Then I get the middle finger. It's just enough for a basic medical emergency, but can't be a significant one... Just a middle emergency. Regular medical situations however I better have money set aside for because oof.
MaleProstateMilker88
Also there's issue with lack of products. You might find stuff from online stores but actual stores don't have what you want or even what you need. That's at least what it feels like when I need something other than black socks or eggs. Want a specific type of jacket like dark wool? Can't be found. Want a another brand of ginger ale than the million cans of product B? Can't he found. Feels like stores push few products they want to push, and the rest you need to find yourself somewhere else
zagibu
Many years ago I have made personal statistics of stuff I wanted to buy. I didn't get over 30% found in stores. And I was looking in a wide radius for specialist stores. So I just stopped going to stores completely, because I have to buy over 70% of the stuff I need online anyway.
The reason of course is that here in Switzerland rent is fucking atrocious, so stores want to limit stocking area as much as they can. But this also reduces incentive to go to stores, because they have nothing in stock
astrangehop
It's optimizing for mediocrity. My local supermarket used to carry Dinosaur BBQ sauce! Its amazing. Then it dissapeared. We've got sweet baby rays, kc masterpiece, etcetc but they're all incredibly similar.
Like those are fine, but there is 10 square feet of "mostly corn syrup" and the one I like is gone because the slight amount of texture and glass bottle probably brought thr profit margins down a bit.
And it's not like it wasn't moving. People know bought it regularly, they just weren't as
mohavewolfpup
M&A mania in soft drinks for example has screwed a lot of offerings. Hires root beer for one. Used to be available on the west coast, then vanished. Found it up in Canada (Kitchener/Waterloo area) back in 2005 so brought some back down here. Now? All but gone since the M&A/buyouts saddled the parent company with so many root beer brands they discontinued most of them and only have a few left in their sales offerings
Nofoxlefttogive
Watsamateryou, you don't like corn syrup, with hickory flavor, that all tastes exactly the same, but bottled differently? Eliteist!
FermentTheRich3000
My neighborhood grocery store of a local chain will order literally anything. I've asked for a specific beer and they have it stocked when I pick it up. They get like a pallet of it. If it sells, they make room for it. There are a lot of weird things that they keep in stock now, but that manager is retiring soon, so it may change.
MaleProstateMilker88
We have that system here as well, but if there's not enough folks requesting product A, they will keep buying whatever the masses want and product A disappears from the shelves without the store ordering more, so it doesn't work, at least not in regular sized stores. Maybe in jumbo sized grocery stores it works better.
trumpypumpyinyourrumpy
My old man trait is if i pay for a movie or streaming service, there are no ads. Ever.
pxlphile
*Goes to cinema, first thing moving is 10 minutes advertising then the ice lady comes in*
pareidoliaperson
My old young person trait is I like the commercials before the movie starts in theatres.
intashu
This was fine before. I hate how now trailers are clips from all the highlights and spoilers for the movies and all too often they ruin the movie by giving away all the good bits before you even watch it.
Shewy92
At least AMC tells you to come to the movies 30 minutes after the listed showtime. But I went to Regal and it was trailer after trailer then ad trailer after trailer.
gravyandfries
Honestly, i kinda appreciate those because it’s the only place i see ads for upcoming movies i may wanna see. Now, the other ads that are legitimate commercials, that shit is stupid af. But i like the movie trailer ads
NorwegianSheepknuller
My old person trait is for when I buy the movie the streaming service should fucking work.
NorwegianSheepknuller
Google Movies is the reason I bought a lifetime license to Plex.
Had built a small library, was about to put a movie on, error.
Tried this for weeks, reset my divices, tried different devices, nothing worked.
At least when my Plex goes down I'm able to fix it myself.
Zedrapazia
Mine is that I will not give any money to streaming. I don't need that, I want to own what I buy. Either it's a DVD/Blue Ray/CD or I will 🏴☠️ it.
I am standing avidly against the loss of physical media.
mikeymikec
Handbrake ftw!
SteveTheEgg
Much like HBO the channel didn't have "ads," I'm fine with HBO Max's previews before certain shows and movies. It doesn't annoy me as much when it's short, at the beginning, skip-able, and not trying to sell me stuff but just inform me of other material on the service.
But real ads, fuck those.
wilagames
We lost that battle in like 1989 when cable started having ads.

keyblader1985
Well there are still ads in home videos and in theaters; always have been.
jeejeejerrycotton
Depends on who released the home video. I was pleasantly surprised last week-end when I watched a couple of Miss Marple -tapes. No ads because it's BBC.
BlueSunBlueSun
Always… no, but no one alive to remember that time. Ads on VHS were skippable and just like on DVDs they were at the beginning, never ever in between McBain’s shooting scenes. And you paid for the movie once, not a subscription where you find a movie 2 months ago that you wanted to see, keep your subscription for when you have time only to find out it’s not in this month’s rotation.
JackDeHearts
These are all just anti-capitalism
Raikupath
Yeah but don't say it too loud otherwise you might scare the brainwashed Americans who think neo liberals are leftists.
JackDeHearts
yeah i said it in another comment and they're doing an attempt at roasting me lol
BishlamekGurpgork
These are things we had as normal things in capitalism.
The thing about capitalism is that it can kind of sort of usually work, as long as it remains well regulated. Enforcing that last part is the sticky bit.
jeejeejerrycotton
No that's now a middle-aged trait . An old person would never pay for a streaming service, when broadcast TV is free.
BishlamekGurpgork
We have cable and pay per view back in the 80's.
intashu
Old person trait is still paying for cable, but also probably paying for a streaming service that's bundled with their cable service and never using it.
trumpypumpyinyourrumpy
Yes they would. My granddad had sky tv from the 90s until he passed 5 years ago. It was mainly for the sport, but it had mgm movies, classic tv etc.
Im 46 and i dont pay. Arrrghh matey, it's the high seas for me.
TiptoeThroughTheMeanies
Sky TV is still broadcast TV, not a streaming service. It also comes with adverts.
losersmanual
If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.
Maverickaura
Excuse me what tv broadcast is free? Have you ever had tv..?
jeejeejerrycotton
All of them? Like if I buy a television set, plug in an antenna and power lead, turn it on, and let it run an automatic channel search, I will end up with IDK 12 or so channels completely free. Three of them won't have any commercials at all because I live in a somewhat civilized country.
jeejeejerrycotton
Oh apparently it's 16 channels now. I haven't watched TV in maybe five years.
Maverickaura
Oooh right. Other countries. America axed its over the air tv system a while ago. Now it's cable or satellite here. The cheapest TV option in my neighborhood is over $100/month for the barest minimum package, full of commercials. Hell some of the channels are just dedicated to commercials (infomercial channels) .
jeejeejerrycotton
Wait, can you provide some source for that? Because I can't find mention of any such axing.
BishlamekGurpgork
America absolutely still has broadcast tv.
BishlamekGurpgork
astrangehop
Yes. And im fine with ads on free services! Tubi & ito are great! Paying abd getting ads anyway is bullshit
houghten
You shouldn't be! Ads are malware for your brain, don't tolerate them even if you're not paying
Athanar
The providers need to be able to pay for content rights to distribute and also need to pay their employees. Ads have always served that purpose. So for free streaming services, I can accept that.
houghten
they can find a better business model or die trying AFAIC
quadraspaz1
It seems so unimaginative that the entire internet is based on either advertising or data mining for use in advertising. Someone have a second idea please
Greypuppy
If a service has to play borderline (or sometimes LITERAL) scams for their ads, the service deserves to fail. Before I got adblock on mobile, I got SCUMMY fuckin ads on youtube, including for megachurches run by millionaires. Known slave shops. The mobile game ads are sometimes worse, as it's obvious fetish material. I even got ads for /actual/ nazi candidates.
I don't care about ads for a movie or pizza place. Fine, whatever, I just muted those. Those were not the only ones people get though.
Athanar
That's fair. I wasn't speaking to the content of the ads, just the general existence of them.
