Besides this, How To Catch a Predator lured 'suspects' with very little to no actual real evidence that the person was a predator. But while they didn't all go to jail, it ruined the lives of these people anyway because now they were associated with what happened and the 'public' rarely follows up if they think the person was guilty.
Wait. So are you saying that I shouldn't have a mustache? I used to have a goatee, because that's all I could grow, but now all I have is a mustache because I'm proud I can finally grow one. I got redneck facial hair genes....
It's a joke but that's exactly why trying to catch predators online when you have no authority or expertise is dangerous AF, you can ruin legitimate operations and/or be taken for a predator yourself
Or you could be killed by the predator. They already demonstrate that they have no problem breaking laws with very serious consequences. They are willing to risk decades in jail and may already have planned to kill the child to avoid being caught. Once they discovered they were caught, they very easily could respond with deadly violence.
When i was around 14~16 i would pretend to be a 10-12yo girl in random chatrooms... Lots of old men (and a handful of women) who were very horny and weren't very tech literate; most not using vpns/tor, some flat out giving their locations. Few even bought plane tickets. I'd grab IPs with wireshark and drop the chats/pics/details to their ISPs and local police deps. When i started, i planned to use RAT trojans to spy and stuff, but so many stupid fish took the bait that i didnt even need to...
Guess i should follow up with that it was a stupid thing to do for a plethora of reasons, but i hope it did some good... My goal wasn't to "catch" them because i knew prosecution is difficult. Just wanted to put them on the radar. Based on the "target-rich environments" i witnessed: even if (hypothetically) every single person i reported got thrown in prison, it wouldn't have even put a dent in it. It was pretty disheartening.
Plus they have no sense of decorum or boundaries. I saw a video where they forced the guy to call his wife on speaker phone and confess, while filming the whole thing and repeatedly rubbing it in that her husband was a pedophile to get a stronger reaction. Hard to have the moral high ground when you're exploiting an innocent woman's trauma in real time and actively making it worse for bigger drama points. People who do that should be in prison.
In the UK, we had these "wolfpacks" who did the same thing, but they didn't bother with lightly things like evidence, and would just mob peoples homes, cause a riot and damage property. Biggest problem was they would take rumours as fact, and even if they did get an actual predator, nothing they got would be admissable as evidence. It was all for internet fame.
I think I saw a short film about this scenario once, except both people were adults, pretending to be kids, trying to lure out the predator (one was livestreaming it.. I think?). They ended up in a tense shootout in the woods, both thinking they were the hero, killing eachother. it was crazy.
The justice system is broken in the US and cops fucking suck. But the solution to that is not vigilante justice, with very specific exceptions. Working outside the law, even when it's for what you think is a good reason, is a bad idea.
What if they don't register and the government has no way of knowing who they are because they haven't been caught doing it yet, and they refused to voluntarily register as a sex offender? Maybe they didn't get the covid vaccine, so the government can't even read their minds yet.. ? Quite the conundrum.
(Don't get me wrong, this shit *is* better left up to professionals - for a myriad reasons. That particular argument against civvies trying to do it was just...weird, though.)
Any contact with minors of any sexual nature is extremely ill-advised. People can even be charged with CSAM and sexual exploitation of a child for giving advice (sending/posting) to trans kids about gender affirming care, clothing, etc. Doesn't matter your intention - just stay tf away from kids full stop.
Trans stuff aside, any contact at all with minors you don't know is ill-advised. I sometimes do OSINT and I avoid as much as possible searching information on minors even if it could help with the main subject. Some day your search history may be on a judge desk out of context and you may have to answer for it.
Helping trans kids by directing them to the right resources is potentially saving lives...especially if they live in a terrible home. Giving advice on where they can receive gender affirming care is not "sexual".
It can get you executed in a lot of countries. In some parts of the US it can even get you just arrested. Best idea is to just ignore children, including if they're trapped under a bus because yeah... You can get in trouble for that as well in some places...
Hopefully the authorities in any well-intentioned person's jurisdiction sees it that way. I certainly wouldn't count on it in today's political climate. I'll repeat myself: stay tf away from kids full stop.
I guess they got exactly what they wanted. You are unwilling to help a child because of right-wing morons. They've already won...because most people are apparently spineless...unwilling to fight for what is right. The thought that there could be any kind of risk is enough for you to sit down and ignore even hypothetical plight. Wow.
I guess I should rephrase my stance. I shouldn't be saying "don't advocate", but rather go into it fully aware of the risks. Know what kind of twisted logic you're up against with conservatives. Contacting/advising minors will get you labeled "groomer" by the right (or worse). Jail time/offender registry because of advocacy and health care is a real risk now and not just for gender affirmation. It's also for women's reproductive care.
Wait, this is a real thing people try to do? Hoooly. Why am I not surprised, we literally saw a fad go on for YEARS where people set themselves on fire.

Have at the ready pamphlets about internet safety; give one to the child, tell them to go home and give it to their parents.

I kind of expected it was going to be another "to catch a predator" guy who would have a camera and try to out them. It could go wrong that way too.

It’s like the show with Warwick Davis (who played Willow and Wicket the Ewok) “Life’s Too Short”
Scene where he isn’t finding enough work so assistant is like “What if we dress you up as a kid to catch child predators”
And he is like
“Absolutely not. What if another kid comes over to play with me, and now I’m the predator”
Show is hilarious & I love how much he makes fun of himself
