I've been watching Golden Girls lately, it holds up very well... But they never told me what happened to the mink they were raising in their garage....
I'm on seasom 3 now. Had watched a few episodes when it was on in my yoot (40 now). I binged the whole series during the height of the pandemic, it's amazing. I'm notoriously a person who doesn't "re-watch" shows, but this is too good. (Also currently rewatching TNG, but these are exceptions to the rule).
Reminder that it's not that most people were bigoted at the time, it's that networks were afraid of offending the bigoted people because they didn't want to lose viewership and some shows had to fight to get their message across.
Estelle Geddy was in Torch Song Trilogy when it first played on Broadway and would later become an AIDS and gay Rights activist. Betty White was an LGBTQ+ icon and activist. Rue McClanahan spoke out many times for gay rights and same sex marriage. That whole cast were icons for reason.
At first I read panel 6 like "She is gonna kill herself anyway, she should take some people out along the way." Then I was like, ooooo.... companionship.... Geez, I'm dark.
Remember that Senior citizen establishments are full of individuals who survived their spouses. We went to the funeral of a friend's dad who was burying his wife of 65 years. He's in the hospital now refusing to eat.
There's an episode where a doctor suggests Dorothy may be depressed and she reacts with such horror and disgust that it was actually pretty painful. She was desperate not to be one of "those people." It was really hard to watch and was the point where I stopped watching it with my ex when she was bingeing it.
I bereave that ep started the chain that ended with a chronic fatigue diagnosis. The first time it was in a TV show like this. There is a seen later many episodes later where she sees that doctor in a restaurant and tears bloody strip's off him for being lazy and not doing his job. A absolute Favourite for everyone with me/cfs who has to deal with that doctor who just thinks your lazy/depressed.
She played the Femputer on Futurama Also. Here’s a small clip, but she had more time in the episode: https://youtu.be/3f8sjzETQ5o?feature=shared (Amazon Women In The Mood S03E01)
That's how it was back then. Nowdays dating is more like "Are you above 6tf? Do you make more than 100k a year? Do you go to the gym and back to work and back to the gym and then to sleep and nothing else all day long just to achieve extremely unrealistic body standards which are quite literally unobtainable for some people because building muscle fast/slow has something to do with genetics as well? Which is why it isn't possible for everyone to run as fast as Usain Bolt even with traingin?"
and then you get a "Well, you have to love yourself first before you receive love!" from people who had unconditional love as soon as they snapped their fucking fingers.
I'm gonna step in here and say I'm sorry for whatever's happened to you to build up so much hate in your mind and your heart. It seems to me like a good deal of it is directed at yourself. I struggled a lot with hating my personal image and it took a lot of time and effort to be comfortable with how I look, but people have still found me attractive and I'm FAR from those body-builder types. If I can find someone who loves me for me, I'm sure you can to. Hold on man. It'll get better.
The reason why I am so frustraded is because I listened to people like you for nearly two decades. I thought there must be something true about what you people say. This whole "You need to love yourself". I did that. I live my fucking dream. Guess what happened. The people just left. I like the way i look, I like my personality and I love my life. It did not do shit when it comes to dating. So please, take your condecending ass and talk to someone that will believe that bullshit.
Throw hate at me all you want dude, doesn't bother me. I still hope you find some happiness in the future. You can always choose to make a change for the better.
I'm assuming you mean the one about suicide? Because (at least in the USA) all emphasis is put on extending life, not ensuring quality of life. That leads to some horrific suffering. Humans deserve the same dignity of a graceful death that we give our beloved pets when it is their time to go.
Been a long time since seeing this episode, but if I remember correctly, they were taking a trip(maybe a cruise?) with some male companions. To that end, they were buying condoms to be prepared and were catching a lot of side-eye about it.
Oh that one. I think they just mean they're snarky towards each other instead of being as truly compassionate as they could. Just a guess. Never seen the show.
I'm not talking about a couple procedures. I'm talking about legitimate untreated mental illness. Jesus Christ, people, you hop on the fucking downvote train without thinking.
Leaving aside the obvious stupidity it took to completely miss the point, why say that about them? They all look age appropriate. Rue MCclanahan was three years younger than JLo is right now when that show started. Estelle Getty was in costume to play the mother of someone older than her. Other than Rue they were all in their 60s. Maybe you thought you were commenting on a different post? Just nonsense.
It's a post with the Golden Girls. I read into it that your comment was in some way related. Glad to hear it wasn't. I guess you just commented with a random, unrelated topic. Don't you think it's interesting that the cichlids in the African rift valley evolved so similarly in totally separate lakes because the conditions were similar in the lakes? Also, Seche Vite fast dry topcoat is the best for manicures!
Honestly, we shouldn't just let people go wild however they want when it comes to plastic surgery the same way we shouldn't let people go wild in casinos or other things that might be addicting to some. Just because they're not taking a razor blade and cutting into their body themselves doesn't mean that maybe some of those people are doing this because of some problems that need to be worked on.
There is a conversation to be had about this. If someone is clearly mentally-unwell, doctors should not be performing more surgeries on them. It should be illegal. And before you say that's between them and the doctor, no. There is always going to be a quack willing to do something as long as you pay enough, no matter how harmful it may be. There is a reason why we regulate doctors.
Only if it’s being used as a self medicating addiction to treat untreated body dysmorphia. Then yes. It can be “wrong” but they aren’t hurting anyone but themselves. So while it’s sad and the illness itself should be treated it’s not like “wrong” as in they’re a bad person or something. They just have untreated mental problems. They need help, not hate
That's what the person said. They never said that the people doing it are bad, they said that too much plastic surgery is bad. Which it is. It can be just as addicting for some, maybe someone does plastic surgery instead of cutting themselves with razors. I just wouldn't let it happen and say "Well, their decision." A doctor and a therapist should at least check on those who do it constantly.

Golden Girls really was ahead of its time.

I was an 80s kid and recall learning so much about acceptance from tv shows, and none from my parents

Now she is memorialized in the greatest show to have ever graced our televisions: The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Rewatching this now, and it's amazing the topics they covered. I didn't realize at the time how important it was.

At first, I read it like a Romeo & Juliet situation instead of someone to hold your hand as you pass.

It's Sophia, so she might have also said that at some point, even if the show wasn't brave enough to put it on air.

I think the last thing I saw Bea Arthur in was her guest cameo in Malcom in the Middle. She and the kid playing Dewey were wonderful together.

She also played Peter Griffin in Rolling Courage: The Joe Swanson Story.
