Ok guys a little background on me: I am a RN (registered nurse) with 2 degrees and specialized training in sexual health. I work at a clinic called options for sexual health in Canada. It is the same thing as planned parenthood the Canadian chapter changed its name because of controversy. I provide education, pregnancy counselling, birth control, PAPs, and minor STI treatments in the clinic. Unlike a typical RN I can diagnose STIs and prescribe mediation for them due to my extra school ( I am not an NP , nurses practitioner, though for those wondering). This will be a mix of stories from the schools where I teach sex ed and the clinic.

So on to to the clinic. One of my "oh my god they know nothing" moments that pushed me into education was a young adult girl came into the clinic to get a bump on her cervix checked. I am doing my little convo with her in the beginning and she says she uses the withdrawal method and doesn't have a consistent partner. I ask her if she knows when she is most at risk of getting pregnant because if she continues to pull out she should know when to avoid sex or use a backup method. "Oh yes 2 days after my period I get a cramp which is the egg moving down"
Dear god no! That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works!

This is just a little info so skip if you are only here for stories. So on around day 28 a woman (or those with xx chromosomes) gets her period. This lasts 5-7 days typically (sorry for those it is longer in). After this for around 7 days the vaginal discharge, even I don't love saying this, is watery and clear. Around the 14th day or 7 days after your period ends the discharge becomes thicker, stretchier, and can be whiteish. Bam you are ovulating and your dumb monkey brain thinks you should get pregnant. At this point in your cycle you may start engaging in riskier sex (think no protection) because your brain hasn't caught up with the times. If you are hoping to get pregnant news the time but if not and you are not on a hormonal birth control or have an IUD now is the time to abstain or use a condom!

So like I said I work in a clinic and I teach in schools. This story is about when the paths cross. It has happened in the past that a student comes into the clinic (normally they are looking for birth control) and has to come see old Mrs. X. No big deal, normally they like me and it makes them more comfortable talking to me. Not the case for this story. Lady comes in to have something checked out and thinks it is a good idea to bring her fiancé. I bring up how it might be a good idea for him to wait outside but she wants him there so whatever. She wants some fertility advice and to check out some spots on her groin. We start with fertility consult in which she tells me she smokes a pack a day and wont quit. Ok just WTF. Nope this is a personal pet peeve of mine, people who smoke around infants, kids, etc drive me nuts. Anyway after we discuss the harms of this (increased risk of asthma and childhood obesity, low birth rate, and increased miscarriage risk) I get to look at the "spots". Well she has genital warts and has been unaware of this fun fact. For those of you that don't know genital warts (caused by the human papilloma virus) are little bumps that in some cases look like skin tags and are treated by freezing them off or painting with a med to remove. Now the fiancé is upset about where she got the warts and the whole thing becomes a scene. I try and calm him down but that is not happening. He storms out and she chases behind screaming. Great fun, anyways next morning I am teaching sex ed in grade 5 and who should pull up with her kid, miss warts. We try like hell to avoid eye contact, so awkward!

Ah this is my favourite story. I am teaching grade 8s and this one boy is super in to it. He wants all the info he can get and has some crazy ass theories his older siblings have told him. This is a theme in sex ed. Older siblings are the bane of my existence. Either on purpose or through sheer ignorance they are giving their siblings crap info. Anywhoo this guy is getting more and more agitated as he begins to realize my time is almost over. Finally with like 30 minutes left he yells out "but you haven't taught us the steps to sex". It takes everything in me not to tell him the steps change depending on how good you are at it and in monica's case from friends ends in step 7 a lot. I explain I am only there to discuss how to begin thinking about the consequences and safety aspects as I hope that none of them are getting that physical and grade 9 is when they will get more sexual content. He gets up an pointing to his classmates yells "But none of them can tell me anything they are all virgins and you clearly are not". While I am flattered that my sexual prowess is that evident I was relieved that the whole class had kept it in their pants so far. I should at this point say that I do not teach abstinence only nor do I confine sex to a marital relationship. My older classes discuss sex as relationship building and empowering. I strongly emphasize the impact sex has on you and the importance of considering readiness to engage but we discuss sex for pleasure quite a bit. (I have never had a parent complain and they are invited into the clinic to discuss any concerns before hand)

I chose this picture because the kids are always ratting out their parents. One time this little girl is waiting for me at the end of a grade 5 presentation. I always discuss healthy lifestyles while pregnant for this grade as this age is very interested in the developing fetus and the connection to the mother. I had discussed the implications of smoking while pregnant as usual. This little girl is almost in tears. She wants to know if a mom smokes while pregnant could any of the effects happen later and unexpectedly. I clue in that this little girl is worried about herself and assure her that the effects would have shown up by now and she lets on that her mom smoked through all of her pregnancies and smokes in he house with her now. Ugh heart breaking. Another one that is worse is a little boy puts his hand up and asks how to get rid of a baby. Now I am able to talk about abortions and do provide info to my older classes if they ask ( I do not go into a ton of detail but I don't think any info if they are looking for it should be with held) but grade 5 is a bit young. I talk about how some moms are surprised by pregnancy and babies are a lot of work so some moms choose to give their babies to new loving homes but some go to a doctor and have the pregnancy stopped. This little boy in the middle of class goes "yeah that almost happened to me". Oh TMI little dude. Lots of times them outing their parents is just funny like "yeah my mom was trying to explain that to me but she got it all wrong" is a common one.

I was asked to come to a grade 7 class after a few of the class had been caught making out and flashing each other at lunch. I though this class might be a bit more "progressed" in terms of sexual behaviour and knowledge. Hahaha these kids were clueless dopes bless them. One kid for some reason though he would show off when we were discussing oral sex and explain it to the class. He said it was how you got the penis erect by blowing air into it like a balloon. Just OMG no. Also I am always so amazed at how little the kids in my area know. My one colleague taught sex ed out east and always played the "alphabet' game with the kids. You hand out letters and each kid puts a term they know for a letter. Ie P=penis. She would get answers that she would have to look up. Nope the kids in my region seem to be a bit sheltered and I think that is because I live in a rural farming region in canada.

Ok last one I have work to do sorry! I had a patient come in who had tried to use a Dixy cup instead of a diva cup and got a ranging infection from it. Two issues here 1 dear god why? Yes diva cups are awesome but a bit pricey around $40. How did you get that little flimsy paper cup in you? So many questions that seemed a bit rude at the time but now I will never know. Issue 2 she was pretty young and I do not recommend anything insertable for young girls due to the risk of toxic shock syndrome if they leave it in too long. I have more and might do another one of these but I am attempting my masters so lets be honest its a miracle I typed this out. Lastly any questions you want to ask I will try super hard to answer!

Instructions unclear: got dick stuck in ceiling fan

I dont know what dixy or diva cups are...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At first glance I thought tltr, but your great writing had me enjoying every line of it. Keep teaching those summer childs, they do need it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just had a baby. Excellent method of contraception. Better than implants/IUD's. Honestly we never even want to have sex nowadays.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes! Especially not when the alternative option is getting some sleep! ZZzzz.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is this sleep you talk of?

I want a hysterectomy because of hemmerogea but doc wants me to try Mirena coil. I'm 33 but done having kids. What would you recommend?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you referring to menorrhagia which is a heavy heavy period? If so yes I would suggest the iud first.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, I don't know much about it, only been diagnosed a few weeks. Will give Mirena a shot. You rock!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Show me on this diagram where @OP touched you

9 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 6

See that third spot down on the left buttcheek? Yea OP touched me in my butthole

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sorry but suppositories are a necessary evil sometimes!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just FYI, you don't ovulate 14 days after your period, you generally ovulate 14 days BEFORE your period. Ie 30 day cycle = day 16 ovulation

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She said 7 days after your period or 14 days since the 28 mark

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought it was important to mention as many women dont have a 28 day cycle. If you trying to (or not) get pregnant, it can make a difference

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clueless kids in a rural farming area? @OP lives in my province!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom is an RN & taught sex-ed at my rival high school. I met guys in college who said, "Oh your mom taught me how to put on condoms!" Yay?

9 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 0

You should have responded "well your mother enjoys it more without a condom" or "to bad your mother didn't know how to"

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 2

But they were proud! She was an awesomely wholesome sex-ed teacher! And they met her daughter! They were grateful. It was weird...

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Here's me thinking the worst about teenagers... and that people online automatically are male or genderless :P

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I had an interesting 'human sexuality' teacher in college ... Blind guy with a good sense of humor. He made his aid throw dildos 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

at our teachers. It was hilarious. XD 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, this post actually posted, got an error. His aid threw dildos at people misbehaving. Teacher wouldn't continue until he heard the THWAP

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, I was pretty close! :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sex ed? No thanks? I'm straight. I might be willing to sex a girl though

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Ok this might be a stupid question but my sex ed classes never told me what cramps mean what. A couple weeks before my period i get a 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

really sharp pain around my ovary area if that makes sense. I always thought this meant ovulation but I'm not entirely sure. 15 y/o btw

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ovulation pain as I understand it is usually a quick prick of pain, normally not during your period but many females deviate.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think you have it right. Which ovary ovulates usually alternates every month; right, left, right, left.

Great post! I used to be a nurse at an STI clinic. One criticism though, you out a picture of herpes above an anecdote about HPV (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah I was looking forward to a herp story!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry I think I was gonna do a herpes story and forgot. I am not very computer savvy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In my experience these two are so often confused as the same thing ,and there's so much misinformation about both that I'd change the pic2/2

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Agreed.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Accuracy is important. Also, how leggy of a bird are you?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At the risk of sounding like one of your grade school students, I though menstrual cups eliminated the risk of TSS?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not eliminate but have a very very low risk.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So my high school only does sex Ed for the sophomores, and up until that point my little sister believed the testicles were IN the thighs

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honest question, so when's the safest time to have sex after the period?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When you aren't ovulating, or about to. Fertility tracking apps can be useful for those trying and those trying not to conceive :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After your ovulation is finished - sperm can survive in the body for a few days, so it's not safe to do before.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was surprised that you rated the 'pill's' effectiveness as so low. Is it because the pill is ineffective or the daily routine is a chore?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The pill is about 99% effective. And thinking condoms are just as good as pulling out...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great work on sex education! I always wonder why the people against abortions are also against the best method to avoid them, education?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The cynical answer of course is they are against woman's reproductive rights, and want to push things back to the imaginary golden times.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depo provera comes with alot of side effects and can kill sex drive

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also my partner has been off depo for 8 months and still doesnt have periods

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I would never recommend it b/c you can't just remove or stop taking it, it has to wear off. Worst 3 months of my life. Made me suicidal

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would teach human anatomy class to college level students..one girl thought a circumcised penis was taking all the skin off *shudder*

9 years ago | Likes 290 Dislikes 1

House Bolton lives!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just the skin on the head yeah? The loose bit? Hygiene there would be so much easier without it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Oh, imagining that. Oh ew ew ew ew! *Grabs at crotch* NO NO NO NO NO NO! It's true though...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's horrifying

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am circumcised, which is unusual for white people in my country. My friend thought it made you infertile(despite us having muslim friends)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

eep! although in fact it's about a third to a half. Which is scary enough to be honest.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

I actually teach college anatomy lab and the fucking things these people my age (21) do not know appalls me. Also hella fucking funny....

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I just started teaching college anatomy this semester and I had no idea it would be this nuts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My lab uses cadavers so people lose their shit usually when i show them body parts. One guy said it looked like roast beef lmao

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Taking off some is fine but all of it is "shudder"? Ya cuttin dick skin off either way it's fucked up man

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 6

Hey I didn't ask for mine to be cut off

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's very true

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'd rather have a bit of lose skin cut off than having the entire thing skinned like a sandwich sausage.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I'd rather remain unmutilated entirely but hey maybe I'm the weirdo

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

Same. Too many fuck it up.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

And also we live in a place and time where soap and warm water are abundant so we're entirely out of excuses.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

ppl need to stop cutting off skin for weird reasons. ( old dusty books are not a valid reason) , medical reasons or leave it alone.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Old dusty books are a valid reason. It's religion.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm happy it was done to me

Funny story, once in English class I was complaining to my teacher about how long the song Pomp and Circumcision was.... A fellow band /1

That's what my band teacher in high school called it. Also "Pompous Circle-Dance."

mate was sitting near me and the teacher and could not stop laughing. It was only then that I realized what I had said.

Ladies, I have a Diva Cup. And it is amazing. Only bot 2 box of tampons in the last 2 years. Ping me, if you have questions. :)

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

I make and sell cloth sanitary pads ;)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I have used a cup (MoonCup / Lunette) for 8 years (I think?). No tampons, no pads. None. It's wonderful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still doesn't beat an IUD: 0 tampons, 5 years

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love using it. It allows longer uses than tampons - even 12h. Usually I had to wake up during night to change my tampon - now I can sleep

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can somebody please tell what in the fuck is a diva cup? Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I'm guessing you stick it up your vajajay and it holds period blood without you even realising that you're bleeding or something. Google it

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You mean a vajoozle plug?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A little silicone cup you stick in your vagina to catch period blood instead of a tampon or pad. Reusable and washable.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've never even used tampons, because I'm unsure how to get them up. Is it difficult to use? And what about public restrooms?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you are not familiar with your body to insert a tampon, I would not recommend using this.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if it's lack or familiarity - I am sexually active, both DIY and otherwise. But it just won't glide up, you know?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tampons are super easy to use. There are instructions and drawn diagrams in every package. Yes you can use them in public restrooms.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but I meant is the dive cup difficult, if I'm not even familiar with tampons?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also basically 0 chance of tss because the material! Much safer than tampons

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How do you not spill blood everywhere when you take it out? How do you wash it?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have to be honest though, it can get a little messy if the cup doesn't come out easy. I've heard not to wash it with soap (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but just rinse it with warm water. You can put in boiling water with some soda between periods to deep-clean.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You just pull it down and out and don't tip it upside down and the blood will stay in it. You wash it with water and soap.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remove and dump it into the toilet. You can wash it with soap and water. Once a month, boil it for sterilization.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was one of my worries too. But it is actually quite clean and no trash! After the period you also boil the cup in water for a few mins.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used one and never got it to settle right. It always leaked. Is it worth trying a different brand or do I just have a weird placed cervix?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too, commenting to read follow-up

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had to try a different folding technique so that it would *ping* open properly to seal. I have a mooncup. 9/10 recommend

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I also recommend the mooncup, I've had mine for several months now.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More likely it's the brand. Because they're made of medical silicone, it should mold to your body shape.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started with a Diva up and it worked fine for me. However after 2 yrs or so I thought it was time for replacement so I ordered (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

el cheapo from aliexpress, these suck and leak all the time. So yeah, brand matters and it's worth the investment :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, you should totally try a different one. Each brand is a different fit. I love the Luna from Germany.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hm, maybe. I had the Sckoon. Tbh I use the Nuvaring so lately on periods I've liked using pads just to not have anything in me for a fewdays

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You rock for addressing issues that some avoid!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For the little girl with mom who smokes at home I'm pretty sure that's illegal in Canada now, that might be worth a call to CPS

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Wouldn't it be better to educate the parent first, then check if they have amended their way rather than treating them as a criminal first?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

CPA is not chomping at the bit to steal your kids. They want parents to not be shit; criminal charges are a last resort.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think that's a sex Ed teachers job. Reporting it is probably best.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

CPS usually takes steps to educate the parents and allow a grace period before any criminal charges are pressed. Vilifying parents is bad,

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it alienates them. You want to keep their trust as long as possible to be able to influence the parents' behavior to make positive changes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm surprised you put condoms in the "Not So Well" category of the chart. #2

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Agree, it reduces the credibility of everything else written. Same with the pill, it's not 6-9 per hundred.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing it's because it's something you have to do each time, that is, something that people forget / mess up.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Also they can break I guess.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too, but likely includes poor use of condoms. If you have something stuck inside you it's harder to make mistakes with it.

If kids want to bang, they're gonna bang. Repression and refusal to teach safety isn't going to turn out well.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's how you end up with a dozen dismembered prostitutes buried under the floorboards in the basement.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Kids are ALWAYS going to experiment with sex. Parents tinkering with it never works. Comprehensive sex education is key to healthy sex.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That was me... And my first bf got me pregnant twice in high school bc I believed him. I was divorced at 19 and now have a handsome 11 yo

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not a good idea. And that's coming from someone who thinks sex acts should stay within marriage. Kids need to know how stuff works. 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They shouldn't be afraid or ashamed of their bodies. And you could get the whole "forbidden fruit" effect: add that to ignorance 2/3

and it's a recipe for disaster. My parents gave me whatever info I wanted, never made a big deal about it. I'm grateful! 3/3

I concur. I am aged 18-turning 19 and I'm ready to have lots of (safe) fun.

Repression most often leads to an unhealthy sex life, such as feeling shame and guilt from having sex and pleasure or for having urges 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This causes depression, anxiety and sometimes behavioral disorders such as compulsions or unhealthy obsessions regarding sex or sexuality...

At worse cases, it causes from mild to severe aggression or mental disorders, such as pedophilia etc. tldr; repression is bad

You absolutely can get toxic shock from a silicon cup. All it takes is abnormally high oxygen levels in the vagina to allow the toxin

producing bacteria to proliferate. People prone to these infections/vulnerable to the toxin are rare.

A really old average they use to teach. Also lots of women have mittelschmerz and can feel when they ovulate, and CM can be very wrong.

I'm loving my husband's sterilization!

Guess what? Females under the age of 26-30 aren't allowed to be sterilized, at least not in the US. Surgeons usually won't do it.

Why's this exactly? Do they think they'll regret it or something?

Yeah, I think that's it. Here in the Netherlands you can't do it 'till 32y.o. I believe. To make sure you don't come for a reversal..l

Is there an age restriction for the procedure for men though? If there isn't I'm gonna be PISSED.

Men tend to have less trouble, but not always. Coworker's husband is 34 with 3 kids and can't get a vasectomy.
