Strangers helped unpin a woman before first responders could get to the scene of her accident. They helped save the woman's life

My sister was in a car accident on I-10 on Sunday and had to airlifted from the scene. “Look for the Helpers” - Mister Rogers —— thank you to the strangers who stopped to help unpinned her before the responders could arrive. Their efforts were the difference between life and death. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the regular guys, the responders, the airlift crew and the medical staff. We don’t know their names or faces but they stay in our hearts and prayers.

How does anyone survive this? Miraculous!

After the jaws of life we’re used to extract her - she was airlifted to the closest level one trauma center. She sustain head & neck injuries, a couple of broken bones, and broke her front teeth. None of her injuries were life threatening, or didn’t become so because of all of the people who helped her. It will be a long road but she’s expected to make a full recovery. We are overwhelmed with gratitude!

FP Edit: WOW - thank you so much!

So to answer some questions.

1) We don’t know exactly what happened and she’ll never remember. We know she loss control, crossed the median and hit a dually truck pulling an empty flatbed. There were rolls and flips somewhere in there too. The driver of the truck was unharmed.

Here is a link to the news story http://m.wlox.com/wlox/db/330810/content/ZtJcOPHv

2) the lady who took the pic would not have been able to help right then. She did contact us to share what she witnessed and send us the pics. There was actually a level of comfort in seeing all the help and hearing the details that were left out of the report so we’re not mad.

3) There is a GoFundMe account to help to get her back on her feet when she recovers, for anyone interested. (removed the link....the generosity was overwhelming and we are so grateful but there is no longer a need for it)

2 WEEKS LATER UPDATE:

So it's be just over 2 weeks since this accident. My sister is doing remarkably well. She was discharged from the amazing hospital she was airlifted to and moved to an inpatient rehab facility for some intense physical therapy. Hopefully she will be able to go home in a week or so. She's expected to make a full recovery.

We were able to locate the main 'helper' - the guy who was leading the effort. He's been having crazy dreams and has been haunted not knowing is she survived or not. He was so relieved to get the call and find out that she'll be fine and we were so glad to make the call to express how truly grateful we are for his efforts.

Couple more details - he was able to clarify a couple of things for us. It was the headrest that had her pinned in a way that was cutting off her air supply. Once they were able to safely break the window they cut the headrest away. They did not risk moving her, they let the first responders do their work to get her out safely. Her eyes were open and she was blue so they knew something needed to be done and used their best judgement to save her.

Most people are pretty okay.

Wow. Usually you don’t walk away from that, they zip you up and slab you. Your family is very fortunate your sis had a Guardian angel there.

Yay! Good news! (Not the accident part, that part sucked) I’m glad she’ll be ok and so many helpful people intervened.

Im so happy that she survived that was an absolutely horrible accident

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So I sent all my thoughts and prayers and twitter likes and I don't even get a mention? Fine.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

ugh men, always inserting themselves into situations without being asked! (/s)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Glad she's still got her texting thumbs

Auto driving cars can't come quick enough.

Sometimes unpinning is a bad idea. Something could be penetrating something vital, and removing it could cause the person to bleed out.

Wow. This makes me happy.

Thanks @op, this was great to see - both the act and your gratitude.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

Very happy for you and your family..well done the helpers .

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hmm wonder what really happened. I'm glad the other driver and his passenger are okay. Post more details later.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We'll never know what caused her to lose control. Her head injury is effecting her memory.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

glad your sis is ok but my first thought was I hope she has insurance cause that's gonna be expensive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jesus christ I could not even recognize it as a car until the third picture..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hope you find out who they were!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

We have found a couple of them, serendipitously. They were amazed she survived and so relieved.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Awesome :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Speedy recovery, I hope she heals well.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yay, she's safe! But what happened?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not sure. She lost control and crossed the median, rolled, flipped and got hit by a truck on the other side. The other driver was ok.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What part of I-10? Just curious.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I used to live in Gulfport, Biloxi, and Saucier before moving to TX. That's basically home for me. Glad your sister survived.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Huge props to these and all involved in the rescue. But I have to say, this looks like a hell of a lot of damage for someone (1)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

driving carefully. Looks like a ton of speed was involved. We're all glad she came out relatively well

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She was probably driving 70-75 mph, she was on the interstate, unless there was a mechanical issue, we'll never know.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When I had a fatal accident/car fire happen in front of me, only one other person stopped to help. Lost a lot of faith in people that day

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m so sorry to hear.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But I'm also really glad to see that your sister will be ok, and that she had lots of help to save her. Kind of a silver lining I guess

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

More stories like this, please!

I think @op's sister has had enough for one lifetime, don't you?

Not mine...but thanks and yes it is. Its called Desiderata. The whole thing is great.

Firefighter here. Don't ever do this unless they are in imminent danger. You could kill them or make it worse.

8 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 5

Unfortunately this advise will be missed by most.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

ACCIDENT? DUFF MAN, GONNA GET ALL UP IN THERE! OH YEA!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

From what I’m hearing..she was being strangled by the seatbelt and turning blue and a fire had started. They were able to cut the seatbelt

8 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Fire is a good reason.

Was she texting and driving?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

It’s very unlikely. She’s not much for new fangled technology but we’ll never really know what caused the accident.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

She’s not old, just technologically challenged!! She’s not on social media either.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Really???

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

If she was doing something dumb while driving a 2000 pound death machine then yes, really.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Do you really not understand the reason for asking? There's a gofundme page, if she caused it for whatever reason, that's on her.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This. This is why I'm proud to be an American. A speedy recovery to your sister @OP.

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 43

As an American, I have to say this is a very arrogant comment.

Yeah like Canadians and Mexicans or whoevs would have just left her to burn in that wreck..this is not about nationality but awesome people

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

Don't know why you were downvoted, you're right. Helping people in a situation like this isn't an "American" thing, it's a people thing

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

What’s American got to do with this?

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

unnecessarily patriotic it seems

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Well, since my ancestors did fight to be free from the tyranny of King George. I am pretty fucking patriotic. Suck it.

thats all? you make me sad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

be sure to check the scene before unpinning someone. They could be pinned in such a way that unpinning them could be worse

8 years ago | Likes 350 Dislikes 5

Most untrained civilians are covered by similar good faith statutes. As soon as you have training, you are held to that standard.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Excellent point. We were very lucky.

8 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 0

If you have to move them before EMS get there keep their neck stable (c-spine isn't hard to learn) even if the say they're fine.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

not only that, without stabilization of the spine, moving them could leave them crippled or dead. only move them if an imminent threat 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

is present, such as a fire, or explosion risk, or profuse bleeding that needs to be seen to immediately, CPR is needed etc. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Not wrong but not useful advice. Check the scene for what- very ambiguous commentary.

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 22

Check the scene is a fairly common phrase in EMS. Probs just forgot to translate the lingo

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I figure if they're not in any immediate danger by staying there (ie fire, oncoming traffic...) it's generally best to leave them

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably should just describe everything as best possible to 911 and do what they say

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like the leg pinned under something that could've been A) pinching the artery keeping blood inside the body or

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

B) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiac_tamponade and skip down to the Causes section. Sorry imgur doesn't allow many words to explain

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Use your common sense. Check the neck, and how the patient would move if you move them. Cant be too specific 140 characters.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

There's no such thing as common sense, especially not in the trauma field.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah check the neck, ask if they can feel all their limbs, basically check for possible spinal cord injury before moving them.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If anybody wants more info I encourage you to take a first aid course. emergency procedures differ from country to country.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Say that their leg was severed in the crash and the only thing keeping them from bleeding out is the way its pinned. It's useful advice.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

It reminds me of the scene from Signs.
