Wang Enlin, a chinese farmer, and his neighbors were affected by the high levels of pollution that were in the water they used for agriculture caused by Qihua Group, which caused that they could no longer grow healthy crops. In 2001, Wang send a report to the Land Resources Bureau of Qiqihar but the officials aked him to produce evidence.
This is when Mr. Wang decided to go to the local book store and started to study law by his own and with a help of a dictionary, he had dropped out of school in the third grade and could not afford the books he needed so he copied the important parts from the books by hand, he also helped his neighbors gather evidence with the knowledge he had learnt.
"In 2007, Chinese law firm specialised in handling pollution-related cases started providing free legal advice to Mr Wang and his neighbours". However the court only began processing Wang's case in 2015 and thanks to all the evidence gathered in 16 years by the whole village, Mr. Wang and his neighbors won the first instance.
The Angangxi District Court of Qiqihar ruled that the families in Yushutun village would receive financial compensation from Qihua Group amounting 820,000 yuan (£96,000).

Now this just makes me wish the American legal system would rule over Net Neutrality the same way, or the Climate Change for that matter.

I'm so glad he won. I heard about this story a while ago. What an inspiration.

It's definitely a good story of empowerment, but the posts about it are not entirely accurate, see:

Being any type of lawyer that defends people's rights in China is dangerous.

I'd like to upvote, but the Daily Mail is a trash source and they might just as well have come up with this story in their break room.

This is a horror story, not one of triumph. If it takes one person 16 years to get any justice, even one so small, its a travesty.

Life is hard. And it will get harder. But the best part is working harder to make it simple for yourself. Keep moving don't stop, live.

It's rural China. That money can go a much longer way.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The compensation is still effing peanuts. For something like this they should've been made to pay properly and via their noses.

Meanwhile, the corporation earns tons. Farmer should've given their food to that "Qiwho" group!

My thought exactly

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, you have to consider that £96,000 will go much further in rural China than it will anywhere in the United States.

Thats where your wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Depends how you're living. Local life in these places is often very cheap if you live in a certain way.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, you can't get very far with £96,000 in the US. Furthest you can get is probably the nearest money exchanger.

Those things that grow on pines. Speaking of which, do you know what a pineapple is.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It’s when you swindle someone out of something. Oh dear, don’t tell me you don’t see lawyers as conmen? How naive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So you think suing a company for polluting is a con. Just makin' sure I have this clear.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, but I think it takes someone with the know-how of a conmen to pull it off.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thus why I said it's not really a con.
