Just before Christmas we all got saying that the company was doing amazing and we were all getting a 5% raise and a 5% bonus that would be paid at the end of January.

I was really excited it would tip me over into having extra each month and not having to juggle bills.

Well apparently because I got a promotion to lead a new department from scratch I didn't qualify for the raise and because I changed departments my bonus had to be recalculated and I hadn't been in the role long enough to qualify.

I am dealing with million dollar clients, helping to bring in our primary income and I get screwed over.

That’s bullshit

Our union forced our employer to backpay us for the inflation increase in our agreement. We have a feeling that, since our agreement ran out on Dec 31 and they're in negotiations, they won't give us a raise this year. But considering we have to strike for a 7% raise spread over 3 years, it's not surprising. 2024 is going to be wild, me thinks

Your manager fucked you on this (either intentionally or not). I was in a similar situation but my manager told me to wait after the bonuses are paid. She was awesome!!!

Do 5% less work and leave 5% early every day.

Well any rocking the boat would jeopradize your job but if its breaking you, talk to the boss before leaving and point it out?

Did the promotion not come with a raise? The bonus sucks though, if you have any of those promises in writing you should address the promises made at least the bonus

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"well, if you're going to stiff me on a 5% raise, I'm pretty sure this is where my above and beyond just stops."

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i would just stop wearing pants at the office until my demands are met

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got promised a raise and a promotion, then the company laid off everyone and moved to Mexico.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Theres always a reason why the workers hget nothing and the CEO gets everything.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I turned down a promotion when my company tried to pull this. I was the only one qualified to fill the position.

"We would have to get the VP to approve an exception for you."

"Ok, do that."

They magically found the money.

Bad management. Bad communication. I promoted a direct a report. Their base would go up ~15k. However we get minor raises yearly. I talked with my direct report and explained I can give them the full 15k right out the door or reduce it by a little so they get a raise 3 months after the promotion with everyone else. It wasn’t in the budget to do both 15k + raise. For clarity, my position isn’t high enough to control the budget. Management should have collaborated with you. I’m sorry :(

Time to look for a new job

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah, the ol' "promote them so they don't qualify for a raise or bonus" ploy. Straight out of the late stage capitalism playbook

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

ALWAYS get these promises from your bosses and/or company in writing, make them spell EVERYTHING out so there's no ambiguity later that they can use to weasel out of the deal later.

2 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Most places have a clause in their offers (unless you specifically counter offer and request as such) that any raises and bonuses are “non-contractual”.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unluckily I learned that the hard way. Luckily I learned it young.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got f'd like that too. They killed 25% of my bonus because the company didn't hit all its metrics. We only made 1.2B last quarter instead of the 1.4B that was projected.

Won't someone think of the shareholders?!?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course, our CEO still retained her 42 MILLION in stock. Their salary is 500k and clearly not enough.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Work on burning it all when you separate.. leave them as screwed as you can…

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Sadly can't do that for a while, I am technically under qualified for my position. But because I literally wrote the guide book in my new departments protocols I'm the only one qualified to do this job. It's a sort of mutual success of destruction

I was going to share how my employer did the same to me, but I see other comments already have. What a fucked system.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The perfect time for job hunting is when you have a job.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, no 1 year anniv raise, no cost of living raise, nothing, even tho they're so impressed w/ me they promoted me to team leader. It's been decided raises will come this summer. Psh, handed in my resig.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The raise I could see (still shitty though) but not getting the bonus is bullshit. Accountants should be able to figure out the math here

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My paperwork for a $4 raise was signed last August by me, my manager, and his boss. And then it was supposedly stuck in HR for processing. Mid Jan I get told that my advance was approved. For next March. No back pay. "Youre not ready for the responsibility yet. But keep doing everything anyway like you have been since early 2023."
My new job starts on the 12th -at- the same rate I would get in March. I feel you OP, dont let them take advantage of you!

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

4$ (an hour) raise?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I was letting myself get taken advantage of cuz I didnt do enough market research to figure out how competitive this place isnt. The regional lead tech flew in and was like "I know youre already doing all this senior tech stuff on your own, but youre getting paid 3 levels below that? Lets do the evals right now and submit the paperwork to make sure you get yours."
7 months later, I flipped shit and they finally gave it to me Jan 1st, but said I -can not- advantage any further til 2026.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

In another comment @op mentioned they are from the UK. If you were promised in writing a raise and bonus it doesn't matter that your position changed. Legally they still have to give you the raise and bonus. I'd say fight this but you are being criminally underpaid. It's time to find a new job mate.

if this were 2004 we would suggest that you look for a new job, but that request has become impossible in the last few years

2 years ago | Likes 208 Dislikes 5

Well, you can still look. But definitely don't quit the current one until you have the signed contract for a new job.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I'm in that situation right now. I got an offer after a third phone interview (nationwide company), but until I sign a fucking form, I'm not telling my current shithole position with my current dipshit boss. I can't wait to not have a micromanaging dipshit to report to.

We have record unemployment according to the numbers...

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Facts schmacts

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We also keep adding new jobs to the market, so while people keep saying that is because they don't count people who aren't looking that doesn't mesh currently. It's a good market overall, will vary with place and what specific jobs you want. Not as good as it was a year or two ago, but there are openings in every department where I work and in similar jobs through the city.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unemployment is calculated weird and doesn't follow normal logic. People who give up on trying to find a job are removed from the unemployment numbers. It's like cherry picking your statistical data.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There are several measures of unemployment. The people who give up looking are hard to track compared to people who are receiving welfare payments or have started that process. https://www.bls.gov/lau/stalt.htm

What raise did you get with your promotion?

2 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

21k to 24k. It was a 100 increase on my monthly wage.

2 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

Fuck that! I was an AV service TECHNICIAN and earned 38k€/year... And Euro IS more than a dollar.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

38k€ is ~$41k, 1€ = $1.08

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

24k a year? Jesus... The gas station next to my house pays 32k a year...

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You should research what people in similar positions make.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My daughter makes more than that working part time at Dollar General. Flip that job.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I make that in GBP, and I still know I'm being underpaid!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A bonus is paid on past work achievements. I would politely and respectfully request that they give you an indexed bonus based on the amount of time you were in the previous role

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

24k? Wouldn't get out of bed for that in £s. Million dollar clients... I work with monkies and make almost double that

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First I'm happy for you, more money is always good but also 24k is far under minimum wage where I live. Even accounting for the exchange rate you would be under the minimum amount to pay taxes, you would also get tons of benefits. Our pandemic relief was 2k / month. I know of 0 jobs where you are in charge of business clients where the minimum asked would be under 40k

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Assuming 40 hours/week that's ~$11.50/hour. My state's min wage isn't any higher than federal minimum wage and the typical grocery store job pays better than this.

You can earn better while still avoiding physical work. Try looking around to see what else exists in your field. If you're handling million dollar clients there's going to be some amount of your industry around. Look for openings elsewhere. You're worth more than you're getting. Good luck!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Omg ha ha I read that fast and thought you meant that the wage increased by 24k (more than your previous wage); I thought that wasn’t too bad… ummm I think you need a new job

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Were this promised after the Promotion? If not you got a higher raise, no bonus sucks but the 5% bonus plus the raise would be less what you get now, you work part times i would guess

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What country? Because if this is murica, the local mcdonalds in Alaska is paying around 35k.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What kinda hours do you put in?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then you got a 14% increase, which still isn't bad considering you're skipping a pay increase. I just got a promotion & department change at my place and negotiated a 14% raise to account for missing an annual pay increase. Bullshit that you're not getting a bonus though, that should be pro-rata on the old role.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If that isn't 24k per month, get the fuck out of there.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You remember this whenever you are tempted to go the extra mile in providing customer service. Don't give in to temptation. Give the bosses exactly what they are paying for.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

dude I'm a CSR and I make $10k more than you, quit this shithole ASAP

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotta ask the obvious question, what unit of currency are we talking about here. In the US this works to around $12/hour. I can't think of any place I worked, including shitty center, where anyone in management made that little. This would make sense in a couple of places in the EU but then the prices for stuff are different too.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Dude. Even at my LOWEST pay of pushing carts at Costco, part time, I made 24k a year. Now years later at full time I make 56k and I'm still pushing carts at Costco. Fucking RUN.

2 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Costco hires part time? They have a nice 401k match and benefits if I remember correctly

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My local Costco only start every hire as part time and you have to earn full time position, which isn't hard really.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was part time for the majority of my time. They kept offering full time but I liked my free time. But full time is definitely better as raises are based purely on hours worked, so you top out faster the more you work.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Going from 21k to 24k is 14% so you're still good there, but screwing you out of the bonus is still a dick move.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

For age 21 min wage in 2023 was 10.18/hr which for 40/wk 52 weeks is 21,174.40. For 2024 mi wage goes up to 11.44, so yearly that is 23,795.20. Looks like they were given the min wage bump as a "promotion".

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Where?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You deal with million dollar clients and get 24k? Dawg find a new job you can make that flipping burgers at McDonald’s

2 years ago | Likes 185 Dislikes 1

To add insult to injury ihe is a lead of a team and getting paid that much.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

This job is less stressful at least for me. I can deal with taxes, rebates, travel expenses etc far better than physical work.

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 4

Is that with commission?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could be an executive secretary / admin assistant for more money, and less stress.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I completely understand that justification in your own head, but it only justifies you taking the job and not the company under paying you. Look for equivalent positions elsewhere and see what they are paid, then bring this up with your boss and give them a chance to match it. If they don't then interview and get job offers, then ask again and choose where you want to be.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You're making close to minimum wage

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work bank customer service, dealing with million dollar companies, abd make roughly 45K a year, and it's remote. Seriously, you should be making more

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Dude you are getting swindled lmao

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry this is accounting and you're getting 24k a year? That's so far below median for zero experience I don't even know what else to say.

2 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

Technically it's finance but I have to deal with other companies accounting systems, banks, project order numbers.
