Someone built a rocking chair/crib.

The final product.

This was the image I initially got the idea from a couple of years ago. I loved the concept but didn't much like the design.

Research: Babies get long really quick!

Here's what I started with. I found two identical rocking chairs from different sellers on eBay. I've taken one apart to look at here. I got a standard crib mattress. Some plywood from the local hardware store.

Trying to map it out

I took the back off one of the chairs and shortened the spindles.

Sanding off the varnish with the B&D Mouse. Not really the right tool for the job. Later I got a more hardcore sander.

Lowering one arm of the other chair.

Used the B&D Scorpion combi-saw to cut the ply. Love this tool. I wonder if all B&D tools are named after animals...

Used a jigsaw to trim the end. Also B&D... I swear I have tools from different brands.

Fixing the back in place.

I drilled inserts and screwed in the larger supports here.

As you can see; I'm really good at taking photos.

Starting to build up the crib here.

Pictured here is the drill I used. I love it. It is essentially a family heirloom at this point. It just never gives up. I don't actually know what brand it is.

Oh...

Drilling out inserts for the struts.

One side done.

Chair part in place, trying to connect the crib and chair.

Hmmm... This didn't go too well. Wood-fill will probably sort it though.

This was one of the trickier parts. The chairs had a nice bit of wood underneath which gave the illusion of extra thickness. I wanted to keep it if I could but had to negotiate this bend.

A bit of thin ply to give the gap I needed.

There. Ish... I think my words were "Screw it, I'll wood-fill and sand it later." Are you sensing a theme yet?

So the chairs were on a backwards slant. No good for a baby lying in a crib. The plan was to make wedges to correct the slant and make the seat and crib level. It was... challenging. With this 'method' I figured I needed the wedges to be 12 degrees.

Grandad-To-Be did some trigonometry. His results came out at about 7 degrees. But Grandad-To-Be hasn't been to school in a while so I made the wedges 12 degrees.

Fitting the 12 degree wedges.

Adding the rockers.

Bollocks. Grandad-To-Be's trigonometry was not as rusty as I thought.

Cut down and refit the wedges. Also making some repairs to the top which I may have broken when fitting the rockers.

After much deliberation and discussion we decided to go with off-white paint. The other furniture for the baby was painted in this colour and it meant I could hide the mismatch wood more easily.

Priming.

Primed.

Painted and in place. I cut the mattress to fit the sightly odd shape (curved at one end) and Grandma-To-Be resized the cover for me.

I'm really happy with how this turned out considering how it looked at first.

So it's a little bumpy on this side. Still pretty happy with it.

Totally not factory standard and approved, so therefore a baby deathtrap. 10/10 WANT!

I honesty like the idea it's creative, but sadly it just creeps me out... Watched too many horror movies

Now hit it with your car to test the safety / durability. If it damages the car, you were successful.

I would strait spend a weeks pay for this, hella dope my guy!

Where does the tiny door lead to?

I guess what I don't get is why you would want the one arm rest to be Lower. I would love to make something like it though. Great job

It looks pretty but not very stable. Also if bubs only falls asleep while rocking you are gonna have a bad time later on.

Saw this years ago...are you actually the creator?

Sounds like it, he included a link to the original post.

Oh baby, it rocks!

Can you fit a soda can between the spindles? Also I'd be worried about how low the walls are. Really cool idea though

I remember seeing this years ago. Not sure if this is a repost.

Huh, a never knew that smaller babies could end up being 40lbs long @ 24 months. neat!

You just made Ron Swanson proud

Hit it with your truck just to be sure.

Ron swanson would never paint wood... But this was really nice!

This is one of those times where a dumbshit like me who always said "when will I ever need trigonometry?" is proven to be an idiot. Go GP!

Look me guys am good with my hands and can make cool stuff *cries*

I've literally seen this exact post made a year ago by someone else.

It would bug the crap out of me that the arms aren't even!!!!!

Your dad's math was correct though. Sin(theta) = 0.12 Theta = sin^-1(0.12) = 7 degrees

Okay I didn't finish reading it before I posted this.

You think youre sooo cool and you are..looks awesome +1

I have definitely seen this before, image after image. Either this is a repost or the original op has resubmitted their post.

Thank you! I was trying to convince myself that I am not crazy, and had seen it before. +1

that is such beautiful wood, and then you make it all white :(

9 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 32

I like it all white. Will look lovely with matching cushion for the chair and sheet for the crib.

Don't worry...baby will puke/shit on it eventually in an array of colors!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

It's for a babies room. Gotta have pastels and shit you know lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Staining and sealing is a pain in the ass. Paint is just fine! Get a nice cover/cushion/whatever and itll be fine.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sealing takes literally the exact same amount of work as painting. Maybe less if you use rattle can stuff like deft.

That, or at the very least make a cushion for the chair part and a matress cover that are a color from the room. All white isn't bad 1/

Since then it can possibly be reused for future siblings of any gender, but at least make the padding colored to match the room. 2/2
