Took the picture during Thanksgiving and then built the frame - the real project. Finished product first... 22x28" (12*18 photo, 3" mat, 1 7/8" frame - yes I know these number don't add up but it's all approximate).

Wood choices - walnut with maple for the inlay and corner splines. Through some mineral spirits on to get finished color.

Hand plane the boards flat and twist free - can't afford a joiner, also there is something very soothing about planing a board flat.

So many shavings

Thickness the walnut - there is nothing theraputic about thicknessing a board by hand.

Gluing up the miter sled - unfortunately I forgot to take any other pictures of this or of actually cutting the miters - tons of videos online though

Crosscut to rough length

Rip the walnut with my new rip blade - 24t FTG freud

Two pieces 1 7/8" wide. Each of these will be a top/bottom and a side if the frame.

Cut some rabbets

Added a chamfer and groove for the inlay - this is why I got the FTG rip blade (it leaves a flat profile at the cut unlike combination blades)

Cut a 1/8" thick piece of the maple the ripped in half on the bandsaw (1 for each of the two walnut pieces)

Dry fit the inlay... At first it didn't fit so I had to sand them a bit.

Glue up for the inlay.

Sanded the inlay down rubbed with mineral spirits to see color - started getting super excited at this point.

Test fit - the glue up the frame rails.

Sealed it all up with some shellac.

This was my first time making a frame and I am pretty pleased with how it came out. The reason I don't know the exact dimensions is that I also cut the mat to size myself. The only part of this entire project that I got help with was I had a local frame shop cut the glass for me.

Edit: well FedEx broke the frame... Super sad.

Maaaan that sucks, finished project looked beautiful. I'm so sorry it broke.

Thank you, and yeah it was pretty heart breaking. I think a frame shop should be able to fix it for her so fingers crossed.
