Well shit.

Oct 18, 2016 9:07 PM

I'll spare you the unnecessary details but needless to say I'm feeling pretty horrid. Send pics of your fluffs if you'd like.

Edit: All of this transpired in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately there weren't many other ways I could have gone about it. I explain further in the comments if anyone is curious about the details.

Edit 2: Thanks for everyone’s advice/condolences. I was working under the table as a nanny and was offered a position as a long term substitute in a school district I had had an interview with this past Friday. I was told over the phone that I would be needed almost immediately to fill the vacancy and therefore felt the need to tell the family I was working for as soon as I could so they could find alternate child care. Instead of letting me work and help them find a solution, they fired me immediately despite knowing that I was looking to gain full term employment as a teacher. The teacher I was supposed to be replacing unexpectedly returned so the district no longer needed me for the position. I can still sub on a day to day basis but the stability and joy from my nanny job is gone. I don’t believe legal recourse would be a wise or even possible decision as I still may be employed by this district in the future.

TBH the company is shit to begin with and you shouldn't be there. My place pats our backs all the way out and still invite for lunch events

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry man. I know this pain.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always thought the two weeks notice for a job was bullshit. They sure don't give 2 weeks before canning your ass.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't this reversed?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this is a great example of why it's best to wait until you've got it before celebrating

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I wait until I'm literally working my first day until I've fully accepted that I've got the job. Even then things can change.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wellllllll. Shiiiiit.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SHHIIIIT.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your first mistake was thinking you could get paid to be in a field all day.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now you know that knowing to knew that know old job new job two weeks ago. -All the experts here.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A hand job from a bird is worth sticking it in the bush of two birds. Or something like that.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

this is beautiful

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always always always get your job offer in writing. An email is perfectly fine, doesn't need to be formal.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

File unemployment, you'll get it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suppose all you can do at this stage is take it as a learning experience.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, that sucks. Lesson learned on when to inform jobs of what, though. Hope my doofus can make you smile:

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Always wait for the offer letter before letting anyone know you've even interviewed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make sure you leave that family a negative-as-shit review on whatever version of Yelp must exist for that kind of thing. Fuck 'em

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never tell current job about new job until you are about to show up the next day. Hint: if you have a job, don't need reference. No 2 wks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well since you were fired, file for unemployment benefits, and get your butt back out there and find a new, better position!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sewing buddys! :D I make foxes too. And fiddle with other things. But have gotten very lazy about it lately. Should make a christmas line.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Least you will get unemployment

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nannies generally don't. Unless she worked through an agency

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never tell your current employer until you have secured your new job. I'm sorry you tried to do the nice thing and got shitted.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Just go back in time and invent the time machine and then go back in time and invent the time machine and then go back in time

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Old job didn't deserve you, my past employer rooted me on when they find out I had an interview in my field

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get the impression what you mean by a job offer is 'verbally told you they'd like to hire you', rather than 'gave you an offer in writing'

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is not what I would consider an offer

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I added an edit to explain a bit better. It's complicated.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never tell the old job about the new job until you have papers in your hand.

9 years ago | Likes 739 Dislikes 4

Amen!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And the papers are signed, ink is dry. //This is a VeryTough Break: "today found out the person I was replacing was returning unexpectedly"

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I have learned this the hard way. It's a tough lesson to learn, but one you never forget.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I told my then current job thay i had got a job offer from another place, and if they couldnt match the pay i would leave. And thats how 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got a 2,5€/h rase and stayed at the current job. Sometimes it works put.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Out*

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think OP knows this now...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You accept the position on condition of giving old job 2 week notice. Unless they're fucking cocks, they'll appreciate that.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Ha! In the UK 1 month notice is common & I'm on 6 months! If I'm changing job it's gonna be a long wait for everybody involved...

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I never understood that. It'll cost them more money to fire me than to wait for me to go away on my own. Also they /

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 can start looking for replacement sooner.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know nothing of business/corporate law, but this is shitty dude.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serious question, who do you list for references then when applying?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Professional references followed by professors then if you have to non-retarded friends.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you just graduated 1 or 2 past supervisors, a professor who knows you well, then coworker/colleague from relevant projects.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm very open with my boss and have an honest relationship. I list him and it looks good. For the engineers that work for me. I do the same

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I push them to grow even if that means they leave. I want them to have upwards mobility. I'm always a reference for them.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jesus man what kind of scum bag company fires you before you put in a resignation?

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

One that doesn't pay severance

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

(1) My current job hires a lot of young people so they can pay less. Naturally we have a lot of comings and goings but if you...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Find a new job asap, my friend. They sound like terrible employers.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) but if you work there for over a year you get a "themed" good bye party with cake and everything but if you leave before that...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(3) they fire your ass and wipe every memory of you, they wont even allow your name to be mentioned anymore!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

His name was Robert Paulson.

Ok, I guess I need to give you a little more info. I was working as a nanny but had a teaching degree. I was offered a teaching (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

position at a district but the teacher I was to replace came back unexpectedly. There wasn't really anything I could have done differently.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Did you have the offer in writing?

I'm glad she found something so rewarding! My husband I are struggling with infertility and I think women like your wife are so selfless.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was trying to give the family I worked for as much notice as possible so they weren't left scrambling any more than they already were.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I know your pain, friend. Career in my field, health requires I quit and take fewer hours soon. I gave them 90 days and got my notice 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Friday is my last day. Which is awesome for my health, terrifying for my bank acct. (I promised through Christmas)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good luck, I hope your health improves! Take care of yourself.
