This is the story of a little kitty named Lucy. She was rescued from a high kill shelter by a non profit organization and she is roughly three years old. Her timid but loving personality made us fall in love and we decided to take her home, just three days before Christmas.

Lucy is the kind of cat that loves affection and her butt scratched just like any cat but there was always something different about her. Maybe it was a sad look in her eye or the fact that she loved people so much but would not come to the side of the cage when we met her. Something was wrong.

When we first adopted her from this nonprofit rescue organization they noted in her medical files that their vet suggested at home dental care because her breath was quite bad. We had her for a week when we started to notice it getting worse and that she was getting sick with diarrhea and she never ate as much as she should have... it was time to take her to the vet but we never expected the news we would get.

They opened little Lucy’s mouth and it was like a war zone. This was not just “at home dental care”. This cat was in an incredible amount of pain and that would explain why she wouldn’t eat normally and always seemed a little sad. We do not know how long she has been in this much pain but how does an organization who thrives on the motto of saving cats let this poor thing suffer with out realizing? On top of all this they had to run tests because Lucy had a parasite but they gave us some medicine to fix that, super easy right? i wish.

Not only did the vet tell us they would more then likely have to remove every one of her teeth due to exposed roots and infection but they also questioned whether she has feline Aids or HIV all things that this organization should have tested her for, before they put her up for adoption because the survival rate for those diseases are not long or do not have a very good outcome. She was tested for that and it was negative!! The first good news we had heard and we started to be a bit more positive because we would save for the surgery that would take two specialists and an all day surgery but she would be happy and healthy after that, just with no teeth!

The date for her surgery was scheduled! The day before Valentine’s day and we were ready to just get everything over with but silly us, thinking everything would be alright. Lucy’s parasite has not gone away, and no surgery can be done until it is gone and now it looks like she is basically allergic to herself, the vet believes she is allergic to the plaque on her teeth and many other foods as well.

This cat has been to hell and back and still has the ability to show love an affection and she has touched every heart that has met her and she deserves to live a life because of it. We don’t know what would have happened to her if we hadn’t taken her in, she would still be suffering in that cage for all we know.

This is just a break down of the medical terms and things that are going on; She had a raging infection in her mouth, made worse by stomatitis so she needs all her teeth removed by a specialist. If we can't afford it we may have to put her down. She is having persistent diarrhea, potential ear, eye, and skin allergies that if they can't be controlled by food will require lifelong steroids to treat. She also got giardia from improper isolation of an infected cat at the rescue. All of this went unnoticed in their care, including by their vet.

This sweet girl doesn’t deserve this really crappy hand the world has dealt her. I know this may just get lost in user sub but i hope we can spread the word about this issue because it happens more often than you would think.

This is Lucy now, just a poor sick kitty who needs help and a very expensive surgery and we want to do everything we can to give this cat the life she deserves. We want to spread the word that adoption is truly a wonderful thing because there are so many animals out there who need a loving home but you have to be careful, this cat was sick when she was put up for adoption and not given the right care and now we have medical bills to pay for that no person should have to deal with when adopted a new family member. Edit: Thank you to everyone who is being so supportive and asking if they can help donate to Lucy’s surgery. I have set up a gofundme because of all the offers and we appreciate everything and anything but if you can’t donate please, please spread the word! Thank you so much!! https://www.gofundme.com/55mb7js Edit: WOW! You guys are incredible, this amount of love was so unexpected but so appreciated and the surgery costs are almost completely covered! This is life changing, thank you to everyone! We still have to wait a bit longer to make sure Lucy’s parasite is gone before we can have the surgery but the moment we know i will post an update! Thank you again to every person who took the time to read and donate, you are helping save an extremely deserving cat, thank you!

you. you we all like. you are a good person. whatever vet check this tiny ball of adorableness out originally is stupid.

We say cats are arseholes but they're not really. Well, ours aren't at least.

I had a cat with resorptive lesions, had half his teeth removed. Over time could eat hard food again and was just fine without teeth.

Just like with breeders, there are great rescues and there are shit rescues.

I hope Lucy feels better. Have you tried feeding her a spoonful of canned pumpkin with her food? It's a great source of fiber for cats.

Beautiful kitty!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work at a vet and see cats with full mouth extractions all the time(some stilleven eat hard food)! Most go without problems after that (:

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My boy has perfectly good teeth yet prefers to swallow whole bits of food rather than chew them anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look into Care Credit. It can help you make payments on the dental and extractions instead of paying all at once.

I got 0% for a year as well when my dog was in the ICU. It’s a great idea

+1 for stellar example of humanity

You’ve done a lot.

I had a cat vance who was allergic to his saliva. All of his teeth had to be removed. He looked derpy as fuck but was a damn fine kitty. <3

8 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

To his own saliva??? Wtf poor thing

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

My pup is old as fuck and missing most of his teeth. The derp is so real and you can't hold him without becoming a napkin!

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Holy crap! My cat has that auto immune too! The one we're he is allergic to the plaque on his teeth. He just had to have them all pulled

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm crying and I want to fix it.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’m disappointed the rescue did not meet her medical needs. That’s step 1 for the animals in my local rescue. Get healthy then get adopted!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a former PetSmart employee, lodge a complaint with the SM, and DM if needed. PetSmart sucks, but they do take their adoption partners>>

My Little leo cat had to wait to get his teeth removed too, I found out that you can give them feline mouth wash and it helps alot.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Nearly all of his pain went away when I started giving him a few drops every morning. The $2000 surgery was a year ago and is going great

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Start a gofundme and I'll contribute. Thanks for being good people @op

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Thank you! We set one up, anything is appreciated. Thank you so much! https://www.gofundme.com/55mb7js

I have been saving for my own dental surgery... Now I'm jelousr of cat with a gofundme

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I'm in @op! Suggest you do a follow up post to keep it going! Donated!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have my support, donation done!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How much will it all cost?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Not including everything we have paid for very visits and medicine the surgery will probably cost almost $4,500...

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

One thing you may want to look into is Care Credit. My cat had to have 9 of his teeth removed due to resorptive lesions and it helped a lot

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same thing with my cat. Spent thousands to diagnose his IBD. Shelter wouldn’t even return any of our calls or emails.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're doing what you can, giving her a better life...no matter how short it will be. When her end comes, she knows she was loved.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You are wonderful, thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My mom fosters for an animal shelter...we have unfortunately had to bury many who came from a broken home. This is how we continue doing it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you for sharing, it must feel nice to look back and think of the lives you guys saved and helped!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

many adoption agencies do not have the funds to treat all so you did the right thing. Dont forget to support your local shelter everyone

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

This is why I get mad when people complain about the price of our animals at the shelter I work at. Our prices are high because we 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

actually have our own vet on staff to provide the needed care, or we take them elsewhere and pay for said care which is covered by our price

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I adopted a cat from a "rescue" and he had giardia, coronavirus, and three kinds of parasites. No FIV test had been done, either. :(

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU for staying with her. Something similar happened to me and my 13 year old rescue. He died anyways unfortunately. miss him bitterly

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’m sorry to hear that!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you

(1/2) Animal control officer here. We have a cat at our shelter with stomatitis named Mangy. Just got all his teeth removed today and he...

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2/2)....is doing tons better already. Nasty disease. Best wishes for you and your beautiful cat

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is weird. I worked at a shelter. We refunded adoption fees and did the dental in office. What shelter is doing this?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not a shelter, just someone who started the rescue and has volunteers to foster but they adopt out of pet stores!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thats pretty shady in my book that they arent helping.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your the kind of person that makes me hate people a whole lot less. I try to be like you, but you do it better.

8 years ago | Likes 368 Dislikes 5

I second this thought.

* You're. (I'm one of the people you hate to balance out OP)

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 3

Dammit. That is a pet peeve of mine. I was drinking at Epcot at the time, so please pardon my indiscretion.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Perfect gif

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just think expecting shelters to test for this stuff is a crazy financial burden that will result in even more animals being killed there

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

ImThey do the best they can. It’s tough when stuff like this gets by, but they are typically underfunded. Heroes like op pick up the slack.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

most animals at shelters have some health problems. The screenings are checking for pneumonia, open wounds, broken bones, anything acute.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right exactly. Punishing them for a situation that's out of their control (i.e. not having enough staff or a super expert vet) isn't helping

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My moms cat had same problem. timid and scared of everything, found out all her teeth were bad. Now, no teeth and personality has done a 1/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

/ 180 degree turn. We used to not be able to touch her, but just cuz she was in So Much Pain!! Poor thing. Hope she heals

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh that’s great! That’s what we are hoping for with lucy, thanks so much for sharing that!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Of course :) The only other change is that she kinda horks her kibble down whole in a weird way, but she doesn’t like wet food! It’s funny

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want to see this raised up to front page. Hope lots of people see it. Surely there's room up there between the dank memes and boobs.

8 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 5

Let's get this to FP!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Hoping there are enough people on imgur who can help this sick cat with the Go Fund Me account to make this happen

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depending on your country you might have some recourse to have the "shelter" pay up for some of the cost. You should check it out.

8 years ago | Likes 464 Dislikes 2

Most shelters are already struggling financially. If we start putting even more pressure on them, adoption fees will sky rocket, and +

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

+ more animals will die, esp. any animal that could be a legal risk (handicapped, etc). It's tough for people to understand so think of ++

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

++ it like a homeless shelter. It's a needed service, *not* a business.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They don't kill for fun, it's because they can't care for *every* animal in the world, and clearly the "rescuing" org couldn't, either.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uh huh... and the answer is not to take animals away from shelters that humanely euthanize them only to force them to suffer until they die.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They offered us the adoption fee back, the fee was $175 and that didn’t even cover the first vet visit..

8 years ago | Likes 259 Dislikes 1

Damn son, $175+ on the first visit? Makes me want to emmigrate to US as soon as I graduate vet school

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 17

Yup. Thats the attitude

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Don't know what's wrong with wanting to be well paid. Pets are a luxury and sick pets even more so. I can't be put to blame because I cont.

Something similar happened to us; our poor kitty wouldn't eat, her breath was terrible. Took her to vet day after adopting and she needed

8 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 2

My boyfriend’s cat needs most if not all of his teeth removed. Thankfully, he’s still eating and acting normal.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You are good people.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Awww thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My kitty's gonna need extractions as well. Old owners fed her only wet food

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

A friend's cat needed all their teeth removed because it was fed wet cat food. Most wet cat foods are not good. Sorry about your kitty. :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thankfully, she's happy with the soft centers food. I figured it was the medium ground for a cat who refused to eat hard food.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wet fed is better for cats. Dry food does nothing for their teeth because it shatters quickly. Dental treats and care are needed!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

My dog had 11 teeth pulled a week after I adopted him. He was from a big kill shelter in NY though so it made more sense that no one knew :(

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

May the dog gods bless you! :) It's really encouraging to hear all these stories of people doing right by their pets. You're a good person.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I already loved him so it wasn't even a question. I actually applied for my first credit card so I could pay the $1700 bill lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 teeth pulled right off the bat. He gave us a discount because he said most people would have just brought the cat back. Humane society

8 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 0

did offer to take her back, but that seemed cruel. We chose her, she was our responsibility. And if they hadn't taken care of the problem

8 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 0

when they had her, why would they if we brought get back? She cost a bit, but she's a happy, fat, and loved kitty in our home.

8 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 1

Shelters get such a high volume of cats they can only allocate a small amount of funds to each cat. I know in my city that’s $150, a basic 1

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Most places wouldn’t adopt them out they’d just be euthanized though :( 4

That makes sense. I just couldn't bear the thought of her going back to the shelter and not getting the treatment she needed. I'm not

Probably go to better use spaying/neutering. It’s the catch 22 of shelter/rescues- help as MANY as you can or fully fix the ones you have? 3

Tooth extraction is like $300, with our rescues discounts- we rescue vulnerable cats in high need but often spend a lot on them that could 2

I had a similar thing, my adopted kitties ended up having FeLV. My sweet March passed away at only 4, but his sister Sweet Pea has severe1/3

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

stomatitis, and had to have all her teeth removed. I was mortified and it was going to be similar for a specialist (~$4,000), but our 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

regular vet took potty and said he could try for $1,300. That was 3 years ago and she’s now the happiest kitty. It’s not as scary as you 3/4

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pity... autocorrect

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

think, they bounce back very quickly, and love you very much for helping them. It never hurts to ask the vet if they’d be willing to do it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sorry about March, but I'm glad Sweet Pea is doing well. A lot of vets are willing to negotiate lower costs or payment plans.
