The goddamn giant eyeball always did me in.

Still holds up imo

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I invested so much time in this game and could never beat the 3rd bowser

I grew up with a nes and snes - when mario64 came out I thought it was the BEST GRAPHICS EVARRR. Nothing could get better than that.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, the N64 had a resolution of 256x224 which is also the exact same resolution of the NES.

I remember mario64 was like

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's amazing how pretty our nostalgia makes old games look.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember discovering the castle in Mario Kart 64. Really blew my mind.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would drive my poor dear deceased grandmother crazy because she had to endure the rainbow slide theme.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was 20 years ago

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Wah, wah, wahooooo"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I sadly never owned an N64 so I never got to complete it. :/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

HD in 1997 is exactly the same as HD today

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*1996

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ahhhh the slide at the bottom of the castle...I still remember turning the controller to make it go in that direction.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That motherfucking water level was so hard.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

Catching the dam monkey? Didn't do anything just fun haha

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought by far the hardest level was Rainbow Ride, so technical!

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Chasing that dang freaking eel

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

"Mr Eel Comes Out Go Play" bah bah buh bah dah!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*To Play, fuck autocorrect

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But the soundtrack was amazing!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hard water levels are Nintendo's passion.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love that one for the music >:(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And the sand level too! Holy hell!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Remember when Ocarina of Time ran at a solid 20fps. It was the best game of all time and no one ever complained about the framerate.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I disagree, because in 96, 3dfx released voodoo cards, and quake 1 was supreme @1024X768 especially with multiplayer. If I remember right.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You are correct. OP is mistaking 3D acceleration for HD resolution.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hard to remember, the 90's feel like it was only 10 years ago and a blur of tech coming out, and even though I was a teenager at the time...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

stop reminding me I'm getting old

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Getting? I think we already are.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shhhh... if I don't look in a mirror I forget easily.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This game was legit back in the day.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes it was!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I miss 3d platformers

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure they still make those. At least on PC?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there's plenty of super mario 64 rom hacks on PC if you want to play variations of the game made by fans

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

actually that was standard definition, since it was all there was at the time. It was the standard, by definition

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 2

[insert "I guess " meme]

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

it was LD since the game was rendered at 240p. SD is 480i, ED is 480p, HD 720p (and I think 1080i falls into that as well) and full HD 1080p

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SD is 480@30/576@24, all depending on whether you're an NTSC or a PAL.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

None of these terms existed back then. There were cathode ray tv's still, not digital. No pixels.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes there were. Images were drawn using a raster scan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raster_scan

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PAL is 576@25Hz or 50Hz if it is double frame (plays the same frame twice) which some DVDs have It's also why some things sound sped up here

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Instead of interpolating frames it will simply be sped up from 24Hz to 25Hz resulting in a 4.271 percent increase in speed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its not playing a frame twice, its showing one frame in 2 sets of interlaced fields, dont confuse Hz with frames theyre related but not same

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not true, I have many DVDs that I can skip frame by frame and it shows the same frame twice.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it wasn't. TV was 640x480 at 24 frames per second but PC monitors could do at least 1024x768 at 75 fps.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

NTSC back then was ~440x480, at 60 fields per second (30 frames after deinterlacing). Only movies run at 24fps.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Low Def. N64 ran at 240p resolution

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol, only if you live in a shitty country. SD tv has 576 lines of resolution where I'm from.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

480 tall is normal for north america. You must be in the UK. Always thought your almost-square tvs looked slightly bizarre.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You dingus, the screen ratio was still 4:3 - just a higher resolution. And no, I'm Australian.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're right. I think UK and Asia had a slightly higher frame rate for television as well. Thanks for the correction.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup, now he's catching up on his rest... After all he hasn't been played since the early 2000's

9 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 7

Many people still play it. Even for the ROM hacks.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2? Super Mario Sunshine? The Marios Kart?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Woosh

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

He's just getting faster. He's tired of collecting stars and just skips straight to pushing bowser's face in instead.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I still haven't gotten the star at the boat level in which you have to fire yourself to a pillar and jump to it, but Mario does not want to.

9 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

I love how he would say different Italian foods while he was sleeping.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"ahhh mamma mia.. ahhh ravioli... zzzz"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 3

Woah, it's so 3D. Like it's jumping out of the screen!

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

But which way is it spinning??

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 16

Clockwise. That illusion doesnt apply because it isn't a silhouette and there are marks to follow such as his arm that crosses from r to l

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

The joke is not strong with this one

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Wow yeah I really underestimated how much people would hate this admittedly lame joke

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I thought it was funny, but like dad joke teir

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What foul necromancy is this...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This just doesn't looks right...

You may not like it, but this is what male peak performance looks like.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This game was so flippin bad ass. At the time, getting all 100 stars meant everything to me

9 years ago | Likes 265 Dislikes 17

100? Proof you're just fishing for points and don't know jack shit about the game.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

During childhood, my friend would erase everyone's file for no reason at all. Same with Phantasy Star Online ep 1 & 2. He got strangled once

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

By the owner of the games (our daycare lady's son). Good times.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The cannon outside the castle opens up and you can get to the top of the castle and see yoshi

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Um...you missed a few.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

20, if I remember correctly

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

21

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure its 20

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Youre short 20. Step your game up

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Wasn't there 120..?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never even got to 15...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Finding all the stars, that was my first legit use of the internet.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man it was huge, never gonna forget watching my grandmother play for hours. Why hasn't this been remade with up to date graphics

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It was released on the Nintendo DS with better graphics. It's worth checking out if you have a DS of some persuasion.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unofficially, it has. I think someone recreated it using the unreal engine and assets from recent mario games. No idea where to get it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I mean, it did get remade for the DS. Super Mario 64 DS, but I guess that's kind of outdated at this point.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can only control the characters with the directional pad which isn't very fun and very close to infuriating.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You were given the option to move your character using the touch screen. To help with this, there were straps with a thumb tab on the end.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a dinosaur on the roof.

9 years ago | Likes 291 Dislikes 4

Ssssssssshhhhh. Its a secret.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I liked the fact is was one of those School yard Legends that actually turned out true.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Fuck what's up with assholes? I just asked an honest question.......

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Wallkick up that corner!

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

WHAT WHAT WHAT... really? I used to do the "jump-slide to the base of the tree" trick to get into the cannon...

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Link and or help me do that please, never been up top, these last 12 stars are killing me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah if your timing and angle is good you can wallkick up the back right corner

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WOW SPOILER! Couldn't give me a few decades to finish it before you spoiled the ending! IMPATIENT!

9 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The princess is in another castle.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You jest; but as a kid, there were hardly any video games my parents would let me play. I'm still trying to find time for the Zelda series.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

'so long, gay bowser'!

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Haha, exactly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol what the hell is he actually supposed to be saying

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only on DS, right?

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 21

No, Yoshi is the first playable character in SM64DS

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jesus I know cowgirl, calm your tits

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Naw, Yoshi was on the roof in Nintendo64, too.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

indeed. You can talk to him once you've cleared the game.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought I read something that said that. TO THIS DAY I'm still trying to beat rainbow ride (tend to play tipsy now vs. being 7 yrs old)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You could always wall kick up the corner. The lives are much more useful before you have all the stars anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Personally wanted to beat it without having unlimited lives, I'm prideful :)
