These guys' videos have EASILY saved me thousands of dollars over the years. Honestly, I knew little-to-nothing about cars a few years ago, and now I'm the guy that friends come to for help on it. I was asked the other day how i "learned so much." So I thought I would put this post together because these people have honestly been just so helpful. Below is some info and some channel ratings.
First guy here is Eric The Car Guy. He's been doing this for like, I don't know, 10 years or something. Tons and tons of videos on so many things. Repairs, mods, best practices, philosophy. He also runs a forum site, as well as another channel just for discussions called ETCG1.

This is Eric O, from South Main Auto. He also has quite a few videos, and he's a funny guy. Has all the weird sayings of a kooky uncle. Fairly well rounded in types of videos and makes of cars. Really, really good with rusty cars.

Scotty Kilmer is kinda known for being a bit nuts. He's presentation style is so unbelievably......unique. But honestly, for how short his videos are, he makes a fantastic crash course in just about anything you would need. I usually watch one of his videos first, just to see what I'm in for, then watch the Erics.

ChrisFix has a decent amount of mods videos, but also several medium-length maintenance videos. Mainly works on American cars (Ford, Mazda, GMC). He's also from NY, so he says "water" super weird.

The Humble Mechanic is really chill and unassuming. Calming. He is primarily a VW mechanic, so that's almost everything you'll see on his channel. Still very informative, though.

Brians Mobile 1 is based out of Utah. He's a skier and makes some awesome stupid jokes that I love. He has a good amount of videos out there too, spanning a long time, and he focuses on Japanese cars a lot. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and it makes his videos very approachable.

Engineering Explained is exactly that. He talks about the actually mechanical workings of things far more that how to fix things. Still crazy helpful though for a lot of diagnostic work.

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics is based out of PA, so he also deals with lots of rust. Like his channel names says, he specializes in diag, and he's good at it. He kind of comes off a been irritated half the time though, so, eh. Still good though.

FP Edit! Whoo!********************************************
Okay, so a few things. I totally forgot FordTechMakuloco. He's also very good, obviously if you have a Ford (which I do). He knows a lot of those little, unique tricks for Ford's, which i helpful. EricTheCarGuy also has TONS of tricks for Honda/Acura.
There are other great channels out there. I learned several from the comments on this post alone, however since I haven't used them I'm not going to vouch for them here. But check out the comments; I'm sure there's a lot more usefulness out there.
If you read the comments, obviously Scotty is super controversial. Hence, my comparison to Wiki. You've been warned. Some of his stuff is way wrong.
If you are wanting to start working on you car, here's a list of basic things I think you should start with, in this order:
1. Front brake pads and rotors
2. Changing motor oil
3. Spark plugs4. Serpentine belt
5. Rear brakes (drum or disk)
6. Alternator
These are all things that are great for beginners with progressing difficulty. Also, be aware that if you've never changed your brakes, you probably shouldn't try a head gasket. Just sayin'.
Glad you all enjoyed the post. Hopefully you can be helped by these folks as much as I was.
MOST VIRAL EDIT??????
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry. If you're commenting about the Mazda thing, Ford had a huge hand in their US based production for a long time.
Also, I added some links for y'alls.
Jester8088
Kilmer’s a fucking hack and his videos are unbearable. Everyone else on the list is A+ though.
filben7
Get learned how to make your car more fixeder.
Hashbrowncasserole
+1 for these guys helping raise me basically lol
DrKenAdams
+1 for Eric O. SMA is one of my favorite yt channels. I'd like ETCG more if he didn't spend half of his videos whining about making videos.
Grambot
Humble guy has helped me with my VW more than I want to admit
SEAW1NG
Hopefully I will find my answer to rough idle. 2004 Passat 1.8t. vacuum lines are nuts on that car.
Grambot
1.8T GTI myself, That's not a job I'd want to run down on my own unless it was obvious; I'd be talking to a shop with the right equipment
mortalkay
No mcm :(
stevtom27
I met them last year
Jufasa
Tbh mcm is less about how to fix your car and more about watching them do mad shit to theirs, still my favorite car channel
clutchthepearls
Scott Kilmer is a hack. You can tell he "figured everything out" in 1987 and stopped learning. Plus he's dangerous.
Atemcyph
Yeah, like the part where he fix a cat converter using laquer thinner. But it works loke a charm with car.
Mercalus
Curious, what makes him dangerous?
clutchthepearls
Sometimes he gets under cars held up by just a jack.
Greyz
If every gets an A, no-one gets an A.
brahbrahbrah
I wouldn't have put the Fs in a list.
glutenfreetoast
Scotty Kilmer Info: A lol no. https://redd.it/810dtm
MasonsRoomate
South Main Auto is great!
CookieRoe
SMA is awesome! I am the only one to think he looks like Eric the Car Guy? LOL.

Thank you for posting this. Favourited and will use in the future.
weeshful
don't wait! go to chris fix's channel NOW! he's so damn entertaining. if you youtube "blinker fluid", his video will be first.
brahbrahbrah
soapy wooder.
pdiddy31415
But if I don't wait who will procrastinate?
weeshful
what better way to procrastinate than to get lost down the rabbit hoel of chrisfix videos?

Mercedessource is great for Mercedes specific stuff. Engineering Explained lost my interest because his presentation sucks. Too fast and dry
SchizophrenicMC
And often outright incorrect.

This post literally has -3 downvotes. +1 @OP

DrKenAdams
Just take out these three bolts, move these hoses over to the side and an engine swap really only takes about 20 minutes - Scotty
Drewie64
Do I need to torque the bolts down? "Nah, just snug em up and you'll be fine"
AlmostClever
Counterpoint: Scotty Kilmer is a dumbass https://jalopnik.com/this-emmy-award-winning-youtube-mechanic-is-full-of-shi-1696524549

Counterpoint: eh, yea. Sometimes. Again, wikipedia.
kristofferactive
Scotty Kilmer? Please he's full of bullcrap
weeshful
"HEY GUYS! CHRIS FIX HERE..."
handparty
I like the guy but the way he talks... "HEY GUYS!" can't tell if it's stoner and/or surfer dialect
weeshful
just a new yorker thing?
FloridaMansSideKick
New Jersey, damn.
DetectiveUkyoSugishita
I don't like the fact it's just hands. One thing about a mechanic is trust, so for him to hide his face on camera is a big -. "Shady."
brahbrahbrah
I love that like, it's just his hands talking to you. I feel like I could recognize them anywhere.
GrumpyNads
FordTechMakuloco is the man for Ford fix-it videos. He is outstanding.
alldressedupandnowheretogo
Replying so I see this comment later. Thank you :)
brahbrahbrah
Aww man. Totally forgot to include him! I drive a fusion, and have used his videos more than once.
GrumpyNads
I think the story was, FTMakuloco was an official Ford tech at a stealership, they got pissed when his vids popular because he was 1/2
GrumpyNads
leaking too much proprietary info...got rid of him, he got his own garage up and running, making lots of vids...good on him
brahbrahbrah
Awesome.
Elizabeth197565
Looks fantastic! Saving for the future!
ItsNotASchoonerItsASailboat
Wait we say water weird in NY? I thought Florida says it weird. And coffee too *shrug*
YourMisdirection
I say warter apparently. I’ve got more of a NY accent than a Jersey one, somehow.
mobiusm1
As former mustang racecar owner Erik the car guy is A++++ taught me how to rebuild a differential and for that I'm forever grateful.
brahbrahbrah
I JUST watched that 8 million part differential video. Sooooo tedious, but really informative.
mobiusm1
man he makes it look EASY in that video, it's way worse than it looks lol. Took me a fucking MONTH to get it all together again.
brahbrahbrah
oof. yikes.
mobiusm1
I have to say though the engineering explained guy is a total tool and just parrots 'intellectual' stuff he heard, not all of it correct.
Bethem909
Provide a specific example.
DeZaim
Agreed. I TRIED to watch one of his videos and got sick of his way of presenting very quickly
fearandloathinginaz
Could you give a solid example of where he is wrong? He passed my litmus test- he understands there is no such thing as 'good back pressure'
mobiusm1
that's hard to get into in 140 characters or less. but some examples of bad videos are his explanations of scrub radius and manual vs auto.
mobiusm1
It's clear he's done a bunch of research and gathered info from various sources, but sometimes he doesn't understand fully & gives bad info
fearandloathinginaz
Okay I'll agree there. He says some small things which may be from lack of knowledge but mostly just glossing over, however still incorrect.
CzarNicholasIII
As a Tech, if you try and fix your car, mess it up and have to take it to a mechanic, please tell them you tried to fix it and exactly (1/?)
CzarNicholasIII
what you did/touched, or you might end up paying a lot more than you should have for diagnosis, people who pretend they didn't mess with(2/3
CzarNicholasIII
anything and that it just "stopped working randomly" drive me crazy, the more info we have the better! (3/3)
Booooooooooooooooooo
If y'all like dirty jokes and cars reviews check out Regular Car Reviews, informative and funny
AndrewBuggy
I can't stand one minute of these unfunny retards. I fucking hate them.
clutchthepearls
Dirty jokes + car reviews + college literature class = RCR
koot4
Favorite videos from him are the subaru and miata reviews.
pdiddy31415
The Humble Guy Beard: A++
shreddedking
had to double take as i mistook him for Osama bin laden
GreaseMonkeyOfLove
I hate working on VWs, but his advice and tips makes it a little less stressful and time consuming when one rolls into my shop.
NotaCPA
As a vw owner. He saved me alot. Purchased a mk7 instead of mk6 because of him. Avoided all sorts of issues
DeltaGTI
Hah, I did the same thing. I even waited a couple years to let them work out the bugs. Love my '17 MK7!
NotaCPA
Delta? Delta bc canada? If so we need to do a cruise at the great Canadian vw event this year!
DeltaGTI
Fraid not, the name stemmed from my first car a Delta 88 Royale. I'm in the hills of PA (think banjos).
NotaCPA
Awww. Thst was my wife's first car too. She wouldn't advertise it. 1987 or 88 olds delta 88...fwd garbage boat of a car.
FisterMantastic
I want my MK3 back :(
Drives11
abso-frickin'-lutely. thanks to these guys I've learned so much about auto repair! I love watchin' the Erics, CF is alright, not a huge fan-
Drives11
of Scotty, but he's useful for showing my co-works with no attention span what they need to do for the most part
brahbrahbrah
that's like, exactly what I use him for.
coldwindblowz
Chrisfix is the best
AndrewBuggy
Chrisfix is brilliant.
Bunghold
WAS the best, now all he cares about is modding his drift-stang.
weeshful
his blinker fluid video is my fav
OrangeRanger
His videos were the start of me falling in love with detailing cars. Then I moved on to other professionals to learn. It's definitely one /1
OrangeRanger
Of my favorite hobbies. There's always something on a car you can clean and restore. /2
causamortis1
Scotty Kilmer spews a lot of bull shit too. Stopped watching his videos because of it.
StrawhatNorby
that it's not a proper fix. Is that type of thing what you are referring to?
dan123dbl
Yeah and his energy is just way too high for me. Settle down dude
SaintRico
Agreed. Can't stand listening to him. He's trying too hard.
dan123dbl
Katoisacat
And he has very little knowledge of the engineering behind modern cars, avoid his advice is my advice 3
Katoisacat
He has a lot of dangerous work practices like working under cars with nothing but a trolley jack 2
Bazookajor
Idk. He helped me change my motor mounts. He's a little crazy though.
Katoisacat
His opinion is anything that is new, diesel, european, has more than 4 cylinders is rubbish 1
StrawhatNorby
Could you provide an example? I've seen a few of his videos. Usually when he demonstrates a patch job he is straight forward and tells you 1
causamortis1
https://youtu.be/StzxurC95-E There's a lot of videos but this is one of his more recent ones.
howdoicomputer
He craps on luxury vehicles, citing that they cost more to fix. No shit, they're luxury vehicles.
THEmadkingLudwig
Fuck ton of random shit, like going after Mercedes and their owners- kinda a 'holier than thou' mechanic.
nameisunavailable
He used compression fittings on a brake line. This is NOT the way to do it, it even said right on the package not to be used on brake lines.
brahbrahbrah
I'll have to agree that Scotty goes off the rails. He has a whole episode on dielectric grease and it's clear he doesn't know what it means.
THEmadkingLudwig
I also believe he replaced brake lines with a line that was not suitable for the pressure/heat-and you could see the package he used.
Goldmarble
He also makes misleading statements. Like saying V6 engines are more smooth than inline 4 engines...because of their design. Rather than 1/
Goldmarble
Cylinder count. Or that they make more power by the V, rather than generally having more displacement. He's like and old uncle who used 2/
Goldmarble
To work in a shop, but hasn't for decades. Is also absurdly opinionated about shit, and never shuts up about it.
Orangeracecar
Cleaning a catalytic with soap.
tiramigiu
or paint thinner, that one was cringey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5icTmYItwiE
bootsrja
he gives different methods/options. the paint thinner mixture cleaned up my cat so well my car ran better than new afterwards.
tiramigiu
Unlikely, that's a placebo effect. Basically get in a car and thrash it for 150 miles. That'll clear lesser catalyser codes.
TimidWallflower
znuff
Is... The cat ok?
bootsrja
yes. ran for 40k more miles before a bus totaled the car. no codes
