This hits home, so hard.

Taking time off has gotten so much worse now. I still get sick and suffer but now I'm already quarantined. Makes it much harder to justify.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love this!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well now you have a reason to take a mental health day tomorrow.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And again, and again...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel this. But panicking at home sucks WAY less than panicking at work. Don't forget - you ARE enough! And you deserve a chance to rest

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You’re absolutely correct, I’m glad I didn’t go, I just wish I could tell my anxiety that!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel terrible about calling in sick to work. Always have. It's like unless I'm in the hospital I'm not allowed.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Guilt is a hell of a drug.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

On the bright side this justified your day off? This might be a sign you want to evaluate how your work is affecting your mental health

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Very much so. You are right

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was this way about skipping class in college

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

ha, i wouldnt go to class if it looked like it MIGHT rain

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

called in sick on Friday. Felt anxious whole weekend that they will think i wanted a longer weekend and faked it

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I am taking Friday off but I don’t need to feel bad. It’s part of the Covid Furlough.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can't care what other people think, so let that go

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my boss was a hard ass about me taking a day here or there off. when i told him it was so i would come in the next day and not be 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

driving my car off a bridge he suddenly got a lot more understanding. i ended up taking a long weekend a few weeks after. travelled my 2/3

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

county, saw the country side and basically took life slow. came in on the tuesday and his comment. "first time i've seen you smile." 3/4

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"I guess it worked?"...yes taking time for mental health works. since then i've taken 2-3 this year. works much easier when your heads good.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You’re most probably right. I just need to get over the guilt

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the guilt for me was a combination of "i need the cash" and "im letting so and so down" since i tell them ahead of time and *plan* 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I find work gets harder to deal with if I avoid it

5 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 6

I find the older I get the easier it is to avoid it

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've found the older I get the more I realize there are no consequences to avoiding it. (until there are)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I’m definitely feeling this. I’m going to force myself back in tomorrow!

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I used to be the same way as you. Ultimately I went to therapy, took medication for anxiety, and also changed careers.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's often tricky to interpret the information we get through thoughts and feelings. Know, understand and be compassionate with yourself.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You’re right, although it can be difficult I am trying to learn to do this!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How did you go?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey! Sorry this post blew up and things are getting buried. I had a wobble half way through but I got there. Thank you for asking!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just tell them that you have vision problems because you can't see yourself coming in today

5 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

Okay, I’m totally using this next time!

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If you were honest about taking a mental health day and this happened, you might reconsider lying about your reason for staying home lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better to be anxious and off sick than anxious and at work.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You’re right. I didn’t want to have another panic attack at work, it was super embarrassing last time.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah I hear you. Hard as it may be. Try to forget and go something else that relaxes you.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Join a union

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Those still exist in America?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

You can get fucked, if you're in I.T. mostly contract work or direct hire for non-union work. If there is a Union in AK/WA I'd love to know

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

an IT union? literally never heard of those

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on state. Some places will fire you for even discussing it

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did this once, accidentally told the truth. He said to take two days.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's a symptom of a bad corp culture where not being at work is so feared one would rather be sick/mentally unwell than miss.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I'm very lucky. I have unlimited PTO. No requirements other than you let your team know and if more than a sick day or 3 plan it ahead.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've got some internet issues this morning and am taking the day off till the tech arrives cause I cant do anything anways.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That sounds absolutely lovely!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is, and Its one of the reasons I took this job offer. That plus starting a whole new project from scratch was too good to pass up

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This happens to me.. every time

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im sorry y’all have to deal with this. I can’t understand because i send an email sayin I’m sick then fly into bed with snacks

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This sounds beautiful

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Let it be known I hardly ever call out and when I do i deserve it lol

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fighting to stop anxiety every day, panic attacks weekly, no energy left for anything. Know the feeling, you’re not alone. Have a hug! *hug*

5 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

The worst part is when you have no enthusiasm for anything anymore. Dozens of games on steam, hobbies, TV shows.. nothing.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That’s depression. You can have both. Time for help, friend. You don’t need to do this alone. You can’t, actually.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you gotta step out and get that help, i've been trying, its slow going, but its going.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s hard to do. Takes energy that you don’t have. But it’s worth it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats the thing about mental health, everything you need to do to fix it are literally the things you have problems with

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I totally understand. Hugs back to you!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nobody should feel this bad. Work to become a scarce commodity in your chosen field and you’ll feel more at ease.

5 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 5

It's hard for some to have their anxiety brain believe that.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am that, but anxiety still bubbles up with everything going on. My company is going thru shit so that probably doesn't help.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A lot of times these are people that have anxiety issues in general. I had a breakdown trying to get change from a bank once.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

i did and now i feel worse calling out because there is no one else who can do the work i do. also never take vacations out of guilt

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Take a vacation, the company will be fine. They might struggle if you burn yourself out though. Take care of you.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Self employed and same boat. I feel so bad when a great customer really needs me but I can't help them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But how do you do that? I had a very annoying conversation is someone who studied a niche topic at uni and has worked in it for 2 decades 1/

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And he couldn't understand why it was more difficult for me to find work. I didn't know what I wanted to do until much much later

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I’m the same red not knowing what I wanted. The key I think is to become good at something in particular. Niche and long-term best...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

... but any skill in demand is good. As you become good at it, you come to realise your co needs you more than you need them....

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

... the key to life (for me) is optionality. Always provide options for yourself that are thought out, and you’ll never feel too trapped.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Branch out. I only have an AS, but I'm unfirable. I code kiosks & website, manage public affairs, oversee interns, work reception...

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Jack of all trades and master of none is still better than a master of one."

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For me I developed my fundamentals, got a job, found where there was a lack of expertise, read books, wrote standards, etc 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And now I’m more or less untouchable unless the company wants to lose their only expert on 50m+ of annual product 2/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which they might someday, but at least I’ll always have those fundamentals

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have nightmares frequently about being late for work because of my anxiety

5 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 1

Hang in there buddy, we all have been in there and passed it.... you can do it.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I still do and I'm a fuckin freelancer now. I've been actually late twice in my entire life.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If your that stressed, you might need to change jobs.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have nightmares where I forget I'm taking a class until the last day. I haven't been in school for 20 years.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I've had precisely this dream before, several times. It's been years since I've been a student.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have nightmares of being late for work at companies I’m no longer employed at :(

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

same!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

me too. Irony is that when I WAS late for work I was just pissed off with myself but not worried

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ask ur primary care giver about Buspar. That stuff has helped my anxiety soooo much.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is the cup half full or half empty? My brain : lets throw it in a wood chipper and see were it lands

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

You're the best kind of person

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a very logical "cup is at 50% capacity" person most of the time, so the wood chipper tends to really get me by surprise.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For me a cup is half way if it's sitting there. If you're drinking it, it becomes half empty, and if you're filling it, it becomes half full

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've had 2 strokes now relsted to panic attacks

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wow that’s scary!! I hope you’re okay!

If you need to talk, I’m happy to.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably not but I'm not in a huge rush to live a long life.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m always here if you need to chat as are many people on this thread. Take care of yourself

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You guys have jobs?

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

So anyone else have nightmares about being late to the second job you don't have?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh god yes! That is me all over. I hate it. I get the paralysis of stress throughout the day, then the self hatred of a wasted day at night

5 years ago | Likes 477 Dislikes 3

I feel you :(

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Don't forget looking at the clock at whatever time you would normally leave work and think "damn, i should have just done"

5 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

I've done this enough to have learned to just do whatever it is I initially didn't want to do because it feels worse later on

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel this so badly!

5 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

It's fucked isn't it. I'm doing it right now

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just remember that every person you work with has done it, many recently and none of them care!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Try to think of it like this. Car needs maintenance, you need maintenance. Clean up your head! CTRL+ALT+DEL the stuck cycles of thought.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Flex your muscles, lay on couch or floor, dance to the song you love. In any order or without order.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too!!! Sorry to hear youre in the same boat, but kinda nice to know im not the only one here

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Same!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This boat sucks.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

How do I get off this fucking boat.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Therapy and weed

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have to call in for the SO 'cause he can't do it himself. Then for myself so he's not alone. My employers are a lot more understanding

5 years ago | Likes 500 Dislikes 9

I used to hate calling in. My current manager is 100% okay with me texting in when I'm not gonna be in and it relieves the anxiety.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I text in usually 3-4 hours before my shift and then just lie there anxious waiting to see if I get a negative text back ?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same, dude

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

God, I've been with an employer who doesn't even ask questions when you call in sick, and I'm still healing from the trauma of retail 1/

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

2/ where having the audacity to be not feeling well enough to work resulted in instant abuse from your manager, and a risk of being fired.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Food service too. Causes you to work when legit very ill in order to keep your job. STILL wincing over it 15 years later.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Never worked food service, but yeah, I imagine it. Fuck, you know, the worst part of it is, the one thing no one fucking talks about is 1/

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2/ the amount of mental trauma that working retail, service, and food service fucking puts people through. A little while after starting to

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I've worked two places now where I've called in ONCE in a year, and had to fight to keep my job after that.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My employer would call that a no call no show.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I once got my mum to do it for me aged 18 and it felt a lot worse!

5 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 0

When I was 20 I had me wife do it. My boss read me the riot act the next day saying that if I wasn't in a coma I'd better call myself.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He's 35, recently diagnosed ASD & a collective bundle of mental nope. It's the worst thing in the world to him

5 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 1

I just want to thank you and let you know how much it means to me, thank you for sharing that.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It’s the worst thing for everyone but that must be so hard for him. All the luck in the world to him!

5 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 1

"collective bundle of mental nope" I love that so much! Gonna steal it.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

It's all about how the other person acts while helping.. find someone who understands and cares and it's very helpful

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Last week I call in because I was worried about my older bros mental health and my boss told me if I don't come in it means I quit.

5 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

That might be your walking music, there are better bosses out there.

5 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

In this economy?...

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Put in my 2 weeks 10 minutes later.

5 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

Good work. No boss like that cares about employees.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't that be an attendance point or two not flat out quit? Most places 1 day isnt an auto quit

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I work part time there and barely make any hours.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Starbucks is an amazing place to work if you need hourly stuff. I’ve worked there a number of times between jobs

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Time to go. Place is probably a revolving door of employment, isn't it?

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Put in my 2 weeks 10 minutes later.

5 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Congratulations!!! It really is not worth it sacrifying your or your loved ones' well being for a job. Best of luck in your next job! :)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Braver man than I. I wouldn't leave my job in this climate... Then again, you might not be American. In which case, congratulations!

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Texas.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh oh yeah the panic attack that ensues can be worse

5 years ago | Likes 1472 Dislikes 5

I've been awake since 4 am scared about calling into work. And I am contract work so it isn't even that big of a deal!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have played that game. I would recommend seeing a doctor and a therapist. It can really help.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had to leave work for an acute anxiety attack. Ended up at an urgent care. Everyone just said "well drink less caffeine"

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

"Just be happy" wow thanks you cured my depression.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'd drank no caffeine. Those seizures were seizures caused by anxiety

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it’s hard because even if people genuinely want to help there’s not a lot they can do, it’s a personal thing

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It’s a real bitch to get all sexied up for a night on the town, and then not being strong enough to turn the doorknob to go out. And lonely.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I took a mental health day earlier this year. Played golf and it was great. Just stay off social media.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I’ve been having panic attacks at work lately and didn’t want it to happen.. but now I’m more scared of going back!

5 years ago | Likes 199 Dislikes 1

I had my first one ever at work last Friday. Nooooo bueno

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It takes a long time to get used to it if you never do it, but calling in sick when you really need a day isn't something to feel guilty for

5 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Took me a long time, & much logic from hubby, to accept that if I'm not safe to drive (migraines) it's okay to stay home for a day.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I am sure if I’d have gone in I would have made a mistake or had a panic attack, I know it’s for the best I just feel very guilty.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I know the feels big time, had a covid scare and went to get tested so called in; everyone bitching the next day that I was on a jolly :(

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also suck on an ice cube

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From my own exp: respect the time your mind asks for, don't force "being ok enough" for work. Rushing things only makes it worse. Take care!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do small actions which you can control and tell yourself "I'm eating this cracker" "I'm picking up this thing". This helps me

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Stay in the now in other words, this works well in the middle of an episode.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Panic attacks at work absolutely suck. If you need somebody to talk to please DM me!

If you can get access to CBD oil in your country I highly recommend trying it as well as the monkey mind meditation

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been there, realised it was time to get some help, no regrets. Take care OP.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Know that nobody will question you or care that you were sick, truly. People at work need you to like them too. You also owe no explanation

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get your eyes and heart checked. I have generalized anxiety disorder and once I corrected my vision and had my heart ablation, it improved.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Identify your trigger. 2. Accept what is happening to you, don’t try to control it. 3. Float it, (change your focus). 4. Let time pass.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Follow those steps each time you start to feel the onset. Identify, accept, float, let time pass. It works, but takes time. Gets better op.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As silly as this sounds, when I had attacks during work (wfh) I put on Bob Ross or Mr. Rogers. Their calming voices helped tremendously.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take a hot bath. Turn off your phone. Make hot chocolate. Remember that you're awesome and can do anything.

Imgur has been surprisingly lovely today. Thank you so much stranger!

Look up anti depressants. Can do good

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I take citalopram but I think maybe I can ask to up the dose

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whoever downvoted me does not have anxiety

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get help. Sometimes you need it for a little bit, no shame in it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I definitely need to, it’s starting to beat me a bit lately.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I took some anxiety meds for a little bit and worked on some lifestyle changes. I got off the meds, and life has been pretty good since!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had panic attacks and all that for a short while. It's awful; pure dread. You don't deserve to feel like that! Best wishes to you!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn having a panic attack at work must be hard. Stay strong!! I think taking off was a good start it's just bumpy

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I like your analogy

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you’re having a panic attack at work, ask if you can step outside for a moment. It cuts down on that “oh god, I’m trapped!” Feeling.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The best advice I can give you is. You're not doing dying. It's anxiety.

5 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 1

Yup I get panic attacks at work sometimes, drink some water and take a deep breath helps me sometimes.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never really helped. U feel like ur suffocating so ur body/brain acts like it.My rational thought never outweighed the instinctive response.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I also try to not do die. Is it the opposite of unproductive living?

5 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

When you feel like you can't breathe and your hearts about to stop. It's good to remember you're not doing a die. It's the bad brain chemica

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Indeed. Hard to let logic win though! My panic attacks revolve around dying itself so it puts me in a bit of a pickle

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean its more just the opposite of living.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That would be dying sir

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well yes. The joke was on the strange grammar

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably better than stuffing it away for 10 years just to have it all boil up and land you in a psyche ward

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I'm in this comment and I don't like it

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s what I’m going for.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah bro save me a bed ill see you at the med line

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not worth it

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If they are reoccurring and frequent, take note of the time and activity when they happen. For me they struck at 11am if I had been >

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

> drinking the night before. The way my body metabolized alcohol left me vulnerable to a cute stress by around 11. Bingo. Mystery solved. >

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

> they were still terrifying though.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I definitely do this after drinking. I should just stop drinking. It’s ridiculous really

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Worrying about the past or the unseen future is a learned behaviour that takes you away from the now. Took me 40 years to overcome that.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So true! thank you for saying this!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey overthinking just isn’t good for you, not is any of it real. Anxiety thrives on it.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So true! It's vital to get out of your own head, talk, write, go outdoors in Nature as much as possible

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only truth is the now is what’s important. I lost years thinking and feeling terrible about stuff I made in my own head. I’m happy now.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's fantastic! Good for you!! we only truly have the present. Letting go seems simple but can be hard. I learned that ruminating, going..
