This is one of those cases where you really, REALLY don't want to half ass the dose...
But honestly, why did NO ONE stop that man?
This is absolutely disturbing..

Wouldn’t be surprised if it could’ve been an intentional suicide attempt.
I’ve been in the same situation as them with the ADHD, medical issues etc for well over 15yrs and I sure as hell am not happy. Don’t really wanna ‘stay’ either.

Did he die?
TheStealthHippopotamus
You know it’s a wild story when the first question is; Which one?
lozeldatkm
Turns out a lethal dose of drugs is often survivable if treated immediately. This is why OD deaths are nearly unheard of in places where all drugs are decriminalized; people don't fear calling for help.
dingybasement350
Do we know this guy was a moron and not just trying to kill himself?

A little dab will do ya
VictusVonGuyver
This reminds me so much of Weyoun drinking poison. Except he could handle it.
RecurringNightmare
okay, did the math, the entire dosis of all the stuff had an LD50 for around 100-110kg of mice and rats...those are all "just" tranquilizers or painkillers, so unless the patient is super underweight its probably ventilation, heart monitor and wait for him to recover on his own...check kidney and liver or whatever organs suffer the most from metabolizing all that stuff...keep epi and atropin ready just in case...those numbers look crazy, but that was not the actual poison, so its not that bad...
Onetonmanwithaspoon
Can you imagine being the attending medic and having to direct that traffic.
DianNaoChong
"but he's in the 'I'm here specifically because I want to die' room?"
BarmyCranberry
I can imagine. The split second of 'did I actually just see that?' must have been intense.
IGotTheMusicInMe425
I think even funnier would be if you were the responding paramedic that was called to the scene lmao.
A frantic guest rushes you to the bedroom where two people are lying unconscious, you go tend to them and the guest yells, "No not that one, he's actually supposed to be like that!!" 😂

I fully believe that man completely forgot it was a drink for assisted suicide and impulse drank it because he was in good company. As someone with ADHD, that’s how quickly we can forget.
Thesaya
That's some intense ADHD...
chickadeedeedeedee
That’s how it works for people with minimal impulse control. We hate it too.
Thesaya
Yes? That is a symptom of ADHD. Which I am only mentioning because it is stated he had it.
FaerieWalnut
According to the article, yep
Thesaya
The worst thing is, I know that impulse. I am pretty sure I would not follow one that is lethal, even back when I was undiagnosed, but I know what it's like to have your brain have you do things way before logic kicks in.
Kehy
And this is why I now have the sleep on it policy- only partially effective as my impulses blend very easily into hyperfixation
Thesaya
I have the "I am medicated, and now have a microsecond to stop myself before acting on my impulses" approach, myself XD
aap71
MAID is an acronym which stands for medical assistance in dying
aap71
Usually it's a sequence of meds that starts with a bemzo similar to Valium, then propofol then a paralytic which sits the lu gs which then causes the heart to stop
HelpfulCorn
The cocktail is detailed in the post
LoudBirb
It says so in the post, yeah.

Thats a diabolical cocktail. 15 grams of morphine by itself will kill anyone.
mabbo
Given it's called MAID it's likely the Canadian program. It's controversial, but there hasn't been anyone claiming it was ineffective. Lowest complaint rate by the patients of any medical treatment, in fact.
Larktonguesinadicecup
Zero positive ratings from confirmed buyers though.

giganticroboticpenguin
Yeah, but it's a little counter productive if they take a sip and puke from the taste.
Sounds like it could use something to mask the taste without diluting or delaying absorption. I don't know typical dosage of those but it seems like they might have the post ingestion vomit reflex taken care of.
jtxyz
"and would you like cherry flavoring mixed in with it for an extra $2?"
jtxyz
"we also have bubble gum, mint, raspberry, and chocolate. Cherry is just the most popular."
Ilikeflufflyanimalpics
They give a strong anti-emetic before so the person doesn't vomit. They recommend mixing it with a small amount of something sweet, but the taste is so strong it's hard to mask. You don't want a large volume for a sick person to have to try to consume and larger volumes increase risk of regurg or vomit. Source: a good friend of mine went through this (I didn't taste any).
jargon2029
Ironically, I'm assuming something similar to this exact situation is why it tastes bad. They want to make sure that anyone not taking it intentionally immediately recognizes it as poison and attempts to get help/vomit it up.
Magpiebones
Many of those substances just happen to be bitter.
llortamai
Mix it with 4loko?

Can any medical experts explain why that would be administered orally instead of intravenously?
Larktonguesinadicecup
It's normal for morphine to be administered orally to hospice patients even when they're not doing it themselves. For one, thing, it's much more pleasant than a needle, especially if you're skin and bones.
HoneyBunchesOfStoats
This is just speculation on my part, but I wonder if it has to do with the fact that it's much easier to self administer an oral dose rather than an intravenous one? Aside from giving the patient more personal control over the process, there's a lot of weird legal shit around assisted suicide which could be a factor.
Eddieq
Several reasons. Oral meds can be self administered, saving someone else from having to give the “lethal injection”. Self administration means they can always change their mind, choose their own time, or postpone the end. Depending on their health they may have poor motor control. Lots of people have aversion to needles. Some may choose to face it with company or alone. They may want to preserve as much of the “natural state” as they can and not want needles or tubes coming out of them.
RevolutionOnHerLips
It's medically assisted suicide, and we're too far stuck up Christianity's ass to believe humans deserve to die with the same dignity we give pets, so even the places that allow it usually have some degree of separation so that the person being administered the lethal cocktail can be said to have taken their own life willingly, with less room for religious sue-happy relatives to use to claim a doctor murdered their loved one and try to get a cash payout. Some countries do administer IV.
DocWino
I’d have to imagine it’s also to protect the person administering the death dose. Who wants to live with being an executioner? Even in this scenario, that would be a difficult thing to do day in and day out unless you actually enjoy killing somebody.
todayok
Christianity's ass? Maybe have a peekaboo at the Muslim view on suicide. And then the Jewish view. Or Hindu. But you don't have the guts to include them in your edgelord rage rant do you?
RevolutionOnHerLips
Yeah I don't really need to include non-relevant information so I don't hurt your little fee-fees. Fuck off, cunt.
