Hi fellas! As an RTS enthusiast, I'm looking for new awesome RTSs to play. Have been playin some alphas and demos, as well as following devs, and here are my top 5 interesting upcoming games. Really looking forward to these!
And yes... I know that SC Remastered is not on the list although it will be released this summer. But we all know that it'll be the same game as the one that came decades ago. In this post I want to highlight and discuss NEW upcoming RTSs. Please comment your thoughts! :)
1. The only really big RTS title that will be released in the foreseeable future. Will it live up to our expectations? There's a new focus on scale and super-sized units, but retaining the clashing armies of the first game and the heroes of the second. Have been getting a beta key, and will test it this weekend... Excited!
Release date: April 27, 2017
Pre-purchase: https://www.dawnofwar.com/buy
2. Bannermen is a tremendously interesting game, containing dynamic environments in a medieval semi-fantasy world. The game have been described as a cross between AoEII and WC3, which makes me all wet! It sure looks like AoEII with heavily upgraded visuals, and the the game is supposed to be less apm demanding than for example SC2, yet maintaining the importance of micro in battles.
Release date: Q2, 2018
Free beta sign-up: https://bannermen.net/
3. Gates of Hell is a historical/realism action-based RTS based on the powerful GEM2 game engine by Best Way. The game takes place during WW2 with a very large amount of different unit types and vehicles. Got the opportunity to play an alpha version and was impressed by the size of the game. Yet, the visuals wasn't the best and the gameplay not super interesting. But hey, only in alpha, so it could still be a great game in the end!
Release date: To be announced
Pre-purchase: http://store.steampowered.com/app/400750/
4. Subsiege is an RTS taking place under water. The developers at Icebird Studios tried to get the game crowdfunded, but the campaign failed. Yet, they didn't give up, and the game is currently available in early access on Steam. I have played the game several hours, and must say that it's a pretty cool game with nice visuals. But a major flaw in the gameplay is the oxygen gimmick - you always gotta have an oxygen supply, otherwise you get killed. This "feature" reduced the gameplay depth and simply put made the game more boring.
Release date: To be announced (currently in EA)
Early access purchase: http://store.steampowered.com/app/338640/
5. The WW2 theme has been proven to be successful in the RTS genre. Almost 10 years ago Sudden Strike 3 was released, and a lot of gamers are eager to play the fourth game in the series. The gameplay in SS4 is a bit slower with larger strategic depth. I've played a demo, and it seems to be a very decent RTS, although with influences from grand strategy games. The game is soon to be released and I will definately give it a try!
Release date: Spring, 2017

whatimherefor
@op you should also look into steel divison normandy 1944. Its basically a wargame set in ww2
DrUtonuim
I would recommend checking out Northgard, it's still in Early Access but looks promissing and is playable even in it's current state ????
BattloidKouji
Will DoWIII be an actual RTS like the first one, or will it be like the second one?
HipHopRoboCop
Steel Division is another one that I'm hyped for
NomerNomerson
Great post! Thanks
jeeper08jk

maliciousGman
I was pretty bummed out when Command & Conquer Generals 2 was canceled.
opiethepug
No Steel division? Shame.
AbsolutelyNotTheNSA
For those who don't know, @AccelSjostrom is actually part of the team for Bannermen.
TheGhostofElizabethShue
You might also mention Northgard, in early access now. Looks a bit like #2 + Vikings? I think?
HOCNOMINEESTFICTUS
Empire Earth II, anyone? Just me?
MinnesotaVikingsSexBoatCaptain
Starcraft Remastered is all you needed on this list
AkLonewolf
Not a huge fan of Korean Chess. I enjoyed the single player abit.. but it because boring fast.
bigboi102
Am i the only one here who played supreme commander ?
Cheomesh
...one of the most popular RTS games of all time?
shoulkion
DoW 2 was nearly company of heroes. I hope DoW 3 is as good if not better
Cheomesh
It's almost like COH used the same engine as DOW1 and were made by the same group...
shoulkion
Never said they weren't.
AndrewCanadian
FOR THE EMPEROR!
Danxiety
Dawn of War 3 feels really boring.
herpopottomas
They all look the same.
MrFastZombie
If Gates of Hell is going to be like Men of War (Also GEM engine), I can assure you it will not quite be the same as the others on this list
UncleAlbert
I was going to say the same thing. It's hard to do better than the C&C games. DawnofWar3 seems to be the only decent one.
asseater2031
Sadly no Lotr
AkLonewolf
what like LOTR battle for middle earth?
asseater2031
Yeah
internetmexican
Bannermen = A more advance "Tzar: Burden of the Crown"
strugglesnuggler
Really hoping Dawn of War 3 will be like Dawn of War instead of the stupid squad dumbassery of DoW 2
Cheomesh
DoW1 had squads, though?
strugglesnuggler
DoW you built armies and waged war. DoW 2 was a squad based RTS where every race had the same campaign.
Ravenuser
Who likes Sins of a Solar Empire?
Mrmtndew76
Age of empires 2 will always be number 1
Cheomesh
My wife and I still play AOE1
iwanttoaggressivelysqueezeteemo
Battle for middle earth was awesome; I'm currently playing Europa Universalis 4 rn.
Cheomesh
I remember liking BFME2, but I can't remember anything at all about the original.
iwanttoaggressivelysqueezeteemo
It was very similar. Bfme2 was a bit better. Sadly EA lost the rights to lotr and it's no longer available.
Cheomesh
Reasonably good game, though the rock paper scissors aspect was taken a little far I think.
VivoImago
Just so you all know, the original SC is free right now.
AlexDuos
I miss that game. I think I might fire it back up this weekend!
LetMeGoogleThatShtForYou
My Chinese friends ask me why do koreans side with US than China...I tell them...make a game greater than SC, then we can talk
TugAndChug
I think their plan is to keep it free.
VivoImago
Huh. I hadn't realized, but that's cool. Thanks for letting me know!
TugAndChug
I could be wrong. It makes sense from a business standpoint though, they're counting on people buying the remaster.
youlooklikeasnake
I'm sad that steel division isn't here
Leonidas182
I'm enjoying the beta, and was looking out for it.
PhilipHedendahl
Yeah, perhaps a good game, but a little too much grand strategy for my taste :)
soso456
Oh man you saw paradox and you stopped thinking? I love grand strategy games and steel division is a wargame, you should look at it again
codenameblack
There is nothing grand strategy about it?
barrocoyote
It's not really grand. It's basically reskined Wargame, which is an amazing series.
LocusSolus
Here's to epic 40k games
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
*cries in 40k* HOW COULD THEY FUCK IT UP SO BAD.
KaladinStormbro
Hell yeah! Soulstorm was great!!
Wickleo
Still is!
BeesechurgerProductions
DoW 3 looks like a Starcraft clone to me moreso than even the first one did, so I'm not too hyped for it. But if IG ever get released, maybe
Cheomesh
DoW is way more involved than Starcraft ever was. Cover, for one.
LocusSolus
I agree. I was buzzed about the release trailer but the game play looks so cartoonish.
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
We were sweet summer children...
DirzBiopsist
DoW 3 imho looks like the worst so far in entire amazing series. It's more moba than RTS and it's soo cringy to watch Angelos jump in TDA..
Raithul
I mean, 2 was already pretty far from traditional RTS. I'd prefer a DoW1 style but they clearly don't wanna do that. I'll try it, at least.
DirzBiopsist
I get that and I will do it too only if it's pirateable. Unfortunately I can't give that much money just to try something yay eastern Europe
Alargeseagull
Dawn of war 3 is really not looking good
Hockenheim
I miss a remake of The Last Stand. Hoped so bad they'd put one in DoWIII
megabassist
It's really not at all :/
Lockerd
So far it's pretty ok. Gabriel angelos doing backflips is meh to me considering I belive hes using some dreadnought hybrid termie armor
Lockerd
The army painter though lacking patterns is immensely better than anything else theyve had
Bobaganush
Are you playing the Open Beta that is going on right now?
Alargeseagull
yeah. i stopped when my terminator captain did a fucking front flip attack and exploded into particle affects
Cheomesh
Well, the setting has always been over the top, but now they've got to push that envelope.
TheActualBruceWayne
I just want a command and conquer reboot
LetMeGoogleThatShtForYou
Did someone say C&C?!?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2MZzIhjlpY
Tikityler
I just want Generals 2. It was already on its way and got scrapped...
zeroexistence
I'm still playing zerohour with mods. ROTR, Contra, shockwave and CWC.
StraightOuttaMaine
I would willingly give up my gentleman's vegetables to see another true Westwood C&C game made.
LeadByBadExample
OpenRA, yo. I'm just sitting here hoping for multithreading for SupCom.
Cheomesh
Meh. I'm just living it up by adapting the setting to a table top RPG.
Photografeel
Say what?
Cheomesh
Woah, nearly a year old comment! But yeah, one of my slow-going projects is running a roleplay game in the C&C 'verse.
oracle9999
If it was by Westwood or people of Westwood I'd be right there with you. But as EA still has rights let's just remember the Westwood titles
EatinButtsAndBustinNuts
Petroglyph (former Westwood folks) has made some decent games, but man. They're few and far between...
oracle9999
True, and the key is .... No EA
EatinButtsAndBustinNuts
Exactly. I can't for the life of me find a copy of Universe at War though.
Freaknik48
Should be able to get it on steam.
Zimno
Grey Goo!
Racealistic
Ohh man Generals and Zero Hour we're fucking lit.
Dinomite89
It's because Generals was the last Westwood studio one during the games development they were disbanded
AbsolutelyNotTheNSA
Zero Hour remains my favourite RTS of all time. Nothing has come close since IMHO.
awildcharmander
literally the greatest RTS game ever made, hands down, by a wide margin
TheActualBruceWayne
That was my favorite. I loved dicking around in Skirmish
Flaywen03
Man, I feel like a new thriving RTS era is coming... LOVE IT!
awildcharmander
I just want my Zero Hour back... that's all I want....
ProvidesYouNewShittyLinks
its the same equal flow of games we always had. Nothing special
rocketman89
Me too, I just wish I was better at them. Can't keep up with the Koreans.
Denvercoder09
Age of Empires 4!
ilikesmallboobiessincenooneelsedoes
Total Annihilation will always be at the top of my list.
PithyCommentBelow
About time!
Cheomesh
And here I was talking with a coworker about how RTS seems to be a dead genre today, ha
LetMeGoogleThatShtForYou
As a Korean, I have that butterfly sensation in my tummy <3 glory days of RTS Red Alert, C&C, Warcraft, Starcraft is coming back!
ukkingwithyourshit
I am still waiting for an RTS to capture me the way those 4 games did. Hours and hours were wasted those. Aftermath and Tiberian Sun <3
Cheomesh
Tib Sun for sure
AlexDuos
We need it man. I'm getting bored with FPS and zombie survival games.
Cheomesh
Are there any good zombie SURVIVAL games? Not Zombie run-and-gun games?
TugAndChug
I'm just waiting for them to make an open world, zombie survival RTS game.
AlexDuos
I'd play it!
AkLonewolf
kinda like Dead State?
Sascreama
Sadly RTS is a dying breed , which really sucks cause I grew up playing Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Warcraft, and Dawn of War.
Cheomesh
Yeah, same (and others like AOE). Wife and I still play AOE and I'm introducing her to Company of Heroes.
Sascreama
I forgot about aoe lol
thehungryguy
You kidding? With the competitive nature of it, it will always have new games. Nit as many as fps, but it is in no way "dying"
thelml
StarCraft just got a new patch (although a bit buggy) and is now also free to play. with a remastered version coming out this summer
Sascreama
I know. I also have StarCraft 2 but the community is pretty dead
chillerluvcats
It was alive years ago when it came out
thelml
TeamLiquid.net forums have been quite active all this time. idk about SC2, but BW has seen a resurgence in tournaments over the past year
Racealistic
Sins of a Solar Empire, Homeworld 2 Remastered are some of the titles i am playing. Fucking amazing games.
Nomtombouts
Deserts of kharak is incredible as well
Sascreama
I've play Sins of a Solar Empire. It was fun but I only played the AI
Nomtombouts
In high school my friends and I would play these massive SoaSE campaigns that would legit take about 12 hours
Nomtombouts
It's actually way different playing people on mics because of the amount of temporary alliances and double crosses
Nomtombouts
Adds a whole new layer of depth
Sascreama
I've always wanted that but I don't have the friend group for that lol. We played Warcraft a few times but that's it.
Nomtombouts
Well dang I wish we stilled played because I'd invite you but I don't think we've touched it in years
Aussieausti
I grew up with Supreme Commander and World In Conflict :'( such fun games
OrangeYouSad
It's a shame they never made a Supreme Commander 2 (no. That thing didn't count)
Aussieausti
Oh yea, it didn't not, everything was totally wrong compared to the first
Aussieausti
Forged Alliance is probably the best "sequel" compared to SC2
TugAndChug
Shit, I still play SupCom.
Aussieausti
Me and my mate play it together sometimes.. end up just nuking the shit out of everything
TugAndChug
I tend to play with no nukes/missiles and then just grind it out... Building multiple experimental units is *amazing*.
Aussieausti
I did that on SC2 turned off nukes and long range artillery so it's just like a conventional war, instead of bombing from afar
sosecretnameiam
on faforever.com?
Aussieausti
Nah just invite each other on steam, we've been friends since we were kids
