Please don't skip the last few stats. I'm getting a little tired of the US getting bashed about having more cases and deaths than anyone else. We also have 4 to 7 times the population of most of these countries. Nobody should be finger pointing or belittling - we should just keep working towards stopping the spread.

But I'm watching news, and nobody seems to be putting these numbers in the perspective that those last few columns do. BBC America was the only one I personally heard that at least mentioned that the US has a higher population - but they skipped the part where it's several times, at least, any other country on this list (roughly 7x that of Spain!).

The same thing happened in an Imgur post yesterday: https://imgur.com/gallery/zeb4YFT

It's talking about how much "better" North Carolina is doing compared to Georgia. It points out NC has two major cities, Georgia has one, but:

Population of Metro Atlanta, GA: ~6M
Population of Charlotte, NC: 890k
Population of Raleigh, NC: 486k

The post talks about NC having two major airports, Georgia having one; According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_busiest_airports_in_the_United_States#Busiest_US_airports_by_total_passenger_traffic_(2019),

Georgia, Hartsfield Intl. Airport: 110M passengers
NC, Charlotte Douglas Intl. Airport: 50M
The other NC airport doesn't even make the list.

Really? You don't think having a higher population density matters? Why don't you ask NY if population density, a highly diverse population, and proximity to TWO major international airports matters.

The take away? It's not that Georgia is all that wonderful - it's not, and I disagree with Governor Kemp's decision to open back up certain businesses, but things are not comparable. NYC shows what happens with a dense population center, of course the Atlanta metro area is going to be worse. Would I rather live in NC? Yes, actually, for a lot of reasons (even before COVID-19), but all the misleading and out of context stats being posted here need context, and everyone out there is doing themselves a disservice if they don't question the context of what they're reading. It's not just COVID-19, either, it's everything.

TL;DR: don't just swallow stats without considering context - not just with COVID-19, but with everything. Far too many of you are jumping straight to rage instead of questioning what you're reading.

its funny the same people posting that we have the highest total numbers call trump out for the testing per capita numbers being low

76% of statistics are made up on the spot

When are the rest made up?

Now Switzerland is easing restrictions... their numbers are similar (slightly worse than) the US, but I'm not hearing people bashing them!

Switzerland's citizens can bash Switzerland, I'm in the US so I'm going to bash poor US decisions.

I can get on board with that.

Yes US has a larger population then most European countries. We also have waaaay more land to spread out. And we also had weeks of warnings.

What do you mean most? The US is 3rd most populous after china and India

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And no one is bashing the US because of infection numbers, but how completely pants on head retarded your government reacted to the pandemic

And yet, you have less deaths per capita than countries with way stricter quarantines such as Spain and France

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

because we have some of the highest numbers of ICU beds and access to diagnostic machines per capita

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

True - the same point I made about Georgia vs. NC, but the vast majority of our cases/deaths are in high population areas, like NYC.

because they refused to shut down the subways "oh its required for economic activity" you don't think beaches in FL are required for 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

the economic activity of those small beach towns? at least the beaches have UV light (which has been proved to destroy the virus) 2/2
