Part 1: The events leading up to the war

After seeing the influx of video game lore posts on the gallery, I've decided to chip in with one of my favorite video games; the Fallout series.

Part 2: http://imgur.com/gallery/LDCvE

Timeline split

Sometime in the 1900s, most likely inbetween the end of World War 2 and the beginning of the Cold War, the Fallout timeline diverged with our own, creating two different timelines. In the Fallout timeline, the microchip was never invented (or if it was, it was never used widespread), and the technology of the Fallout timeline instead focused around analog and vacuum tubes, instead of moving into the digital age like our own. So, while Fallout is based in the future, its technology is actually more similar to something you would find in the 1950s/60s. Because of this, the technology in the Fallout universe is very energy inefficient.

The Rise of Nuclear Energy and the Resource Wars

As I said before, the analog technology in Fallout is very energy inefficient. Because of this, Nuclear power became one of the most widespread uses of generating electricity. Nuclear power was found everywhere; including in your cars. Mankind was obsessed with harnessing the power of the Atom.

Unfortunately, on the other side of things, America and the other world powers are beginning to use too much oil. The oil fields in many of the world's most prosperous countries begin to shrivel up and die. Because of this, the Resource Wars began. Europe invaded the Middle East, the United Nations collapsed, and the United States increased their military presence in Alaska to make sure no dirty commies could have their oil. Many small nations which were dependent on the oil industry went bankrupt. Later, China invaded Alaska, which started the Anchorage campaign, eventually leading America to annex Canada.

The Beginning of the End

Above, you can see a picture of gas prices in America during the end of the Resource Wars. Inflation was widespread around the world, nations were clashing over the smallest pockets of oil, and things were starting to get heated. The U.S. government saw this. So, in preparation, they commisioned...

The Vault Experiment

Also known as "Project: Safehouse", the Vault Experiment, helmed by Vault-Tec, was commissioned by the U.S. Government to safeguard the future of America in case of inevitable Nuclear War. for Unfortunately, Project: Safehouse soon became a place instead for the U.S. government and Vault-Tec to do unethical experiments on the people who lived within. Out of the 122 vaults constructed, only 17 weren't used for experiments. Only a handful of the vaults actually survived the War.

The End

Through the Resource wars, America's invasion and annexation of Canada, China's invasion in Alaska, and the skyrocketing prices of Nuka-Cola, eventually the world could sustain itself no longer. No one knows who dropped the first bombs or launched the first nukes, but in a mere 2 hours, the world was in nuclear ashes. Many american citizens didn't heed the warnings of the air raid sirens, and perished with the others.

I feel as though I need to clear this up; due to the timeline split I mentioned earlier, the bombs used in the Fallout universe are very different from the nuclear weapons we have in ours. In Fallout, the bombs are designed to have long-lasting radiation in the area, meanwhile ours are simply for devastation.

TIL post-WW2 is "the early 1900's"

These are always fun to read. Thank you.

When I read "Anchorage Campaign", I shivered with cold. Amazing how good games can elicit a physical and emotional response.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe add years? The world officially ended in 2077. Fallout 3 takes place 200 years later.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please do more, Fallout is one of my favorite series.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

WOO! CANADA!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

whelp... even the most tatical nukes will spread very high amounts of strontium and unburned fuels thus making the whole thing radioactive.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, but the Fallout games take place 100 years and more after the war. The radiation would not be as deadly as it is in the games.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

War. War never changes

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

so if there are no microchips, how do Pipboys work?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

tiny, tiny vacuum tubes.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fallout 2 is the best Fallout game! Play it with the Restoration Project! :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If anyone's reading this, tell everyone to make more vidya game lores. Pass it on.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fallout lore is best lore. I always upvote fallout.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Me too, except uh, the whole pregnant lady thing...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like you should have been a little more detailed with Pre-War lore. Such as America's cultural and geo-political stance as well (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as how the annexation of Canada happened (i.e. The "protection" of the pipeline and harvesting of Canadian resources followed by riots)(2/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So how comes we don't have Pip-Boys yet? Like. Pip-Boys need to be a thing.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I recall correctly, the time line differs because the transistor wasn't invented in the fallout universe

11 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 0

We avoided nuclear holocaust because someone was bright enough to invent the transistor? Science FTW!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also wasn't there something else that kept american exceptionalism from stopping? Been a while since I read the lore.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Stopping?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read the entire fallout bible, can you make a post about The Master and how Richard Grey became like that ? Im sure imgur would love that!

11 years ago | Likes 165 Dislikes 1

That's a story for another day.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sounds excellent man where'd you find that?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

you can read the entire Fallout timeline from here http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

comment for future reply

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A reason many didn't go to the vaults too were because they didn't believe the air sirens. Thinking it was just another test AFAIK

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love Fallout series. My favourite that I can play many times over. I NEED a Fallout 4.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When FO3 came out, I didn't leave my room for 4 days. If they ever make a FO MMORPG I might leave the real world forever.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, there is fallout online.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's probably not a good idea to know WTF you are talking about.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ShoddyCast also has a series talking about the lore on Youtube ttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7pGJQV-jlzD17YNNbt103xp0PkkUCoPU

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Much love for the promo ;)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read this entire post in that narrator's voice.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is a great series. Wish it was more frequent.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too. I'd donate to their Patreon page if they posted those more often.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His YT channel is addicting

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After the "Fallout has the best lines" post, I whipped out New Vagas and have played 20 hours in 3 days. Guess I'll just keep going...ty m8

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More lore. More lore!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like you.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh God Fallout 4 better be good... I know it will be! But i don't know what they can add to make it any better than FO3.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How about controls and movement that are *at least* on par with 1995's standards? That would be nice.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are Fallout 3 controls not up to '95 standards?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, not really. Bethesda games typically control like driving a tank with broken treads.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone should make a post about the lore of each vault, what experiments were conducted there and what went wrong, etc.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

These are all lies. Vault Tech would never do anything harmful to its valuable subjects... I mean customers

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Someone did a whole series of posts a few months back of this XD

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You have any links? Today is set to be one of the most boring days at work in a long long time.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@SlendyIsBehindYou did some, check his/her uploads. Oh and r/falloutlore might help, too.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Much appreciated.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey Mac, hit me up if you want some content, its my specialty :)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for thinkin of me :D

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, Google did. I just remembered someone had posted those a while ago and did a quick search XD

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'early 1900s, between the end of WW2 and the cold war'... ? Thats the second half of the century mate .

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fixed it, slight oversight on my part. Sorry.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you play the game youll notice that the art decor is stuck around the late '40s early '50s, it's never stated but it's believed to be 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

around that time that the bombs were dropped, causing a technological stasis

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The bombs dropped in 2067... Its stated numerous numerous times in all of the games.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fallout is the future imagined from the 50's: Nuclear-powered cars with tail fins, radiation causes giant insect mutations and powers.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

these lore posts are most welcome!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cannot wait for fallout 4

11 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

I can wait until day I die as long as it comes out.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you enjoy 76. Did you enjoy fallout 4.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can, considering how badly F3 butchered the IP and F:NV was only marginally better. Was better off dead.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I come for ze future...CONGRATS AGAIN!!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

any knowledge on when this may possibly be coming out around maybe please ?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

None. There's nothing other than the date at E3 this year. We don't even know if there will be one.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It needa to happen before my wife says im to old for video games

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I hope bethesda doesn't make a fallout online, personal opinion.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard it is gonna take place in san fran

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

nope, Boston.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Can we get a Warhammer 40k?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Yes, but it won't be an "a", more like 40 thousand posts to explain it fully...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Emprah, golden toilet, Horus Heresy, WAAAAAAAGH

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Lol @ golden toilet.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not to be nitpicky, but I believe it was the transistor that was never invented in the Fallout universe.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was invented but only shortly before the war.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The more you know

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I still need to finish the first one. >.>

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

He had my upvote when I saw the Fallout 1 cover.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Congratulations!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You, me, and a couple more people agree.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ever since Fallout 3, I've wanted a Fallout MMO set in NYC. That would be amazeballs.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Lookup Tom clancy's the division if you don't know already.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if they use nuclear power for everything and everything is energy efficient why did they need oil ?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd like to see a version of Fallout and Fallout 2 made where it plays like Fallout 3.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Heathen.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you, brother! DRIVE OUT THE HERETIC!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

PRAY, OBEY, PRAISE The MASTER And The HOLY FLAME!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

bro i fucking know. i only came in on the fallout new vegas game, but they have it spot fucking on. i find myself replaying it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the internet son, we all want a new fallout game! That's like declaring your love of boobs and cats on imgur.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I love cats and boobs!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same, but only if Obsidian writes it.

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 9

Eh, I wasn't big on New Vegas.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 9

Same, but only if Obsidian has nothing to do with the gameplay.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Which did they do the gameplay for? Because fallout 3 is one of my favorites and new Vega wasn't quite there.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And here I am just reading through Chris Avellone's original Van Buren design docs thinking, "Give the damn IP back to Obsidian dammit."

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want to erase my memory of 2 and replay it

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We already have Fallout and Fallout 2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

December

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ooh, i think thats super optimisitc.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I meant it getting announced in June, not released. I doubt we'll see it until next year. Fingers crossed for this year though.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

just imagine fallout 4 taking place in detroit. they wouldnt even have to have it be in the future, the place is so bombed out already

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I could stand to revisit The Pitt in that one. The rust belt has so much potential

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

instead of sending you to the pitt it would send you to either canada or the UP. either one would be funny

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

RadMoose would be terrifying

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

HOLY SHIT, THE STRATEGIC NUCLEAR MOOSE MAKES SENSE NOW. IT WASNT RANDOM, IT WAS A CLUE TO THE NEXT GAME

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
