Maybe should have put more thought into the title of this kids' movie.

The Lion King looks fucking majestic either way

Theatre posters are actually made for parents, while dvd covers have to catch children eyes, though.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I notice you did not include the original Little Mermaid VHS cover. That one was a little adult...

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

it makes sense, get the parents to want to see it in theaters, and then get the kids to ask for it on dvd. pretty clever.

13 years ago | Likes 216 Dislikes 2

bingo

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There is a drastic shortage of sparks and debris in these posters.

13 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

This needs more upvotes.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Don't forget muscular heroes with their chins down, eyes up and guns over their shoulders. Silhouetted against the carnage of course. Art.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

VHS cover. Ha.

13 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

+1 for the theatrical posters.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the fact the dvd covers are much smaller, and you can't see as much detail, is a factor. Also not as worried about spoilers.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

they should have kept the theatrical posters! #rage

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

why are you using hashtags…?

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

because i rage against the norm

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Theatrical posters are designed to get parents to take their children. Video covers are designed to make the kids want it.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think it's time that I d/l the theatrical posters for my DVDs and reprint the covers for them.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That Mulan poster is badass.

13 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

I know!, fortunately there is such a thing as custom covers :D

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that Tarzan one. So cool.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I scrolled through the comments before posting because I was thinking the exact same thing

13 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Definitely, but I thought the cover was relatively pretty cool too

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You missed Aladdin. That was a great theatrical poster.

swan princess- first: theatrical poster. the second is a random poster.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Idk... Mufasa still looks majestic

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

The ones for Mulan and Beaty and the beast are just.... WOW

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All of them but Pooh add the characters

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Posters are meant to be seen from a distance unlike DVDs

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

KANGA ISN'T EVEN IN THE 'KIDDIFIED' POOH POSTER. I'M SO BOTHERED.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

well... aren't they children's movies......?

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Thank you.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of those theatrical posters are really haunting. I remember being oddly moved by the Tarzan one when I was a child.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That Lion King poster literally gave me shivers!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Film poster design really is a lost artform isn't it? All these unimaginative floating heads and silly taglines.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

VHS Lion King poster is still majestic as fuck.

13 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Well, posters and dvd covers have different intent, and so it's not that surprising that the covers are less ambiguous and "teasy"

13 years ago | Likes 568 Dislikes 5

I think you meant to say that covers and less ambiguous and posters are "teasy".

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I work in the movie industry and you hit the nail on the head. Almost all the posters shown are known as Teaser posters. Only Prince (1/2)

13 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

also you have to consider the fact that posters are meant to go on big billboards vs small dvd cover.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I know it's been a year, but the cool ones could be used for collecters editions n stuff

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And yet, would it kill them to put a "variant cover" in the dvd case? So we can choose.. oh well, sometimes there's not even a booklet.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also the format is totally different. a poster size version of the DVD cover would look busy, but necessary on a small DVD cover

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and Dragon are what is known as Final Posters. Teasers are up weeks before and want people to think about it. Finals are up a week (2/2)

13 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Neat. Thanks

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This guy knows his shit... both guys

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

before and durring the run of the movie and are meant as a call to action and often times look much more like DVD covers (3?/2)

13 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

It looks like the DVD covers would also be geared towards kids to get the "Moooommmm I want this one!!" response.

13 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and the posters are to get the parents to take the kids to see the movies while in theater, because they have to sit through it.

13 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This tactic... it's a tale as old as time.

13 years ago | Likes 1107 Dislikes 2

This is now relevant again

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beauty and the beastttt

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Its almost as if they're trying to sell something!

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hi.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Magical response. +1

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

tale me about it ;)

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn that song will now be in my head.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

boom. nailed it

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and unfortunately, it aint no passing craze

13 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

But that's just part of our world.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I went to the next picture, realized what your comment said, and came back. Just to upvote your comment. Thank you for saying that...

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's a subtle Disney joke. Have one in return!

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is one of my favorite Disney movies. So I was very happy to see that lol

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Drawn as old as rhyme

13 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 0

Bitter, sweet and strange

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

MMMMUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

In retrospect I should have said "drawn from just one line" or something like that. Hindsight = 20/20 etc.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Beauty and the Sleeve.

13 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

And thats why we called him mr. hok tooey

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1/2 This is what they call "relational advertising". The theory is that by the time of the DVD release, you've made a relationship with the

13 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

2/2 characters over the story. Kids (and adults) won't think "Lion King", they'll think "that cute little lion cub" or "Simba (sp)"

13 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

What this man said, also target audience anyone?

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Right. Think of TA as a rifle, and RA is a shotgun. Demographics vs psychological triggers...

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hot diggety, I understood the concept entirely based on the visual theme before I learned the name for it! I FEEL SMART

13 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

that's so weird, since they're marketed towards kids....

13 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 5

Right? Next, theyre gonna market porn to adolescent males looking meet hot singles in their respective areas. Blasphemy

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

i would bet the posters are meant to appeal to parents, and once they've gotten you in the theater with your child, the child takes over (1)

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

and harasses you to buy it every time they see the vibrant disc cover full of characters they remember. (2)

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

yep, & theater poster is meant to tell a little less to keep some mystery about the film & the dvd cover is meant to grab attention in store

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Secret of NIMH is the absolute worst offender. Theatrical:

13 years ago | Likes 359 Dislikes 0

My husband would not let us have the DVD for that cover. He said it ruined what this movie acutely is

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heh, "Family Fun Edition" of one of the most twisted children's films... Someone is in for a surprise.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

they look like 2 completely separate films

13 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 0

that movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid

13 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

me too!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooh... Sparkly!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Miss Briz! I gotta have it!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a more recent cover re-do, IIRC.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If I recall correctly? I like it. I haven't seen ppl use it, so sorry that I must comment

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yep. Goes right along with IMO/IMHO.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Recall or remember. I've used IIRC for ages...

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sums up my absolute love and fear of this film as a child.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Notice the top of that DVD cover says "Family fun edition". Here's a more general audience cover:

13 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

yeah this was the VHS tape i believe, thats probably why more of us recognize it

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't recognize the first two, but I do recognize this one.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Same here. This was the one I had.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The princess and the frog fucking ruled.

13 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

I was going to disagree. Then I saw your user name. You clever bastard…

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Were you in it?

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen it and this is the first I am hearing that it was good. Should I go see it? Only one in the pictures I haven't seen...

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should definetly do it

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not comparable to Lion King, but it definitely belongs in the same library. At the time, I said it was the first time Disney genuinely

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

go on, I'm listening

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

pleased me since Lilo and Stitch (because Pixar movies are not made by Disney, only distributed by them). The story feels a bit sparse and

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

at times it seems as though it goes straight from one song to another, but it's still satisfying to watch even if it could have been longer.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The songs were awesome and Facilier was badass.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've met Keith David (Facilier) and hugged him. It's a really strange connection to make with a villain who summons demons.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and I really liked the southern america atmosphere. and tiziana was one of the hottest disney characters ever.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... *tiana

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ah sorry

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my bad

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or, you know, theatrical posters and DVD covers serve different purposes and are designed differently for that reason.

13 years ago | Likes 1287 Dislikes 15

I remember being a kid when these came out, I LOVED the cartoony super colorful covers, the other ones seemed to adult for me then.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yup. Posters are made for creating interest, DVD covers are made to be identifiable and this post was made by an idiot.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

Also, the DVD cover gives you a reminder of what you have seen if you watched it in the cinema.

13 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Also theatrical posters are much bigger. An image may look great on a 5 x7 dvd cover but horribly on a 24 x 36 poster and vice versa

13 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

I agree, +1 for the effort though

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

DVD covers are smaller format and with less control over printing quality. That might not be all, but it's enough.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Furthermore, those are "teaser" posters which are designed to be more visually stimulating and spark curiosity than just informative.

13 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

The biggest difference I saw is that the DVD covers are more revealing or assume a large number of people already know about it.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Actually, the theatrical posters are selling the PARENTS, while the physical media covers are selling to kids in the grocery stores!

13 years ago | Likes 244 Dislikes 5

pretty much this.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

... thats, exactly what he was saying.

13 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

yup!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, I came here to say the exact same thing!

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is it exactly.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you're allowed to sell parents now?

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a marketing major, this.

13 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 5

As an artist, also you don't fall in love with the characters until you've seen the movie at least once. Til then, you're selling a mystery.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a consumer psychology major, this.

13 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

As a guy who's been to at least one grocery store, this.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As a marketing graduate, marketing is stupid.

13 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I couldn't agree more. It's just finding clever ways to lie, really.

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I love you guys.

13 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

hate you too <3

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1
