9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Atleast he wasn't standing over it, otherwise he'd be having crushed nuts with his sundae

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If he'd had his face over the cut (not straggling the rail) it'd missed him

9 years ago | Likes 176 Dislikes 5

Maybe he thought the other end would spring?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They probably assumed it would just magically go anywhere other than directly at his face

Shitty welding technique! Good he wasn't wearing just googles!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but he's not welding

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a welding cutter.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a plasma cutter

For anyone curious, cutting rail with a torch is now illegal under FRA regulations. This probably happened 10ish years ago

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

how do they do it now?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's a special jig that fits over the head of the rail- like a guide. Plus a specially tempered 14" cutting wheel/grinder combo

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fun fact:way back when they actually used to cut the holes for bolts by just leaving a torch lit on one side of the rail and pushing a punch

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The old method routinely left heat stress risors in the body of the rail leading to more internal defects/breakage.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That mask prob saved a lot

9 years ago | Likes 556 Dislikes 1

Its a hood not a mask. mask is stationary, hoods rise up and down. He's wearing a cheap hood that's prob .020 thick, it didn't do much

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 26

saving face

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah but now there's a bruise on his forehead and chin where the mask hit him. (Definitely better than broken face though.)

Probably not his dignity though

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, don't worry. Nobody saw it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless it sprinkled broken glass into his eyes, then it did a lot worse.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

... glass? -_- pretty sure those are not glass.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The shitty welding masks we had at work had a tinted (breakable) glass behind the plastic protection glass. They sorted them out ->

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

-> after one guy got a shard in his eye for pulling a stunt like shown above.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, I guess "shitty" would be the word there. I would hope people buy good products but I would also hope people don't cut tense steel...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most are glass. When steel melts at 2500°F plastic ain't gonna cut it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought they were plexiglass type substances. Either way, hopefully safety glass at a minimum.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea it did those masks are pretty tough.

9 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

So he learned a good safety lesson at small cost. Win!

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

He already had the helmet on so he probably knows.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty much. Also around $60-80 for a new decent helmet.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

>decent| >Walmart| >helmet >$60 lol I spotted the hobbyist.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Nah I'm a mechanic but I don't weld often so I don't need a good one. His helmet was cheap

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Small price to pay, really. I'd rather pay that than facial reconstruction surgery fire decades to come

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I still feel for that helmet though. Wasn't it's fault it's owner isn't paying attention.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How long is a fire decade?
