A shell, released by the Bolsheviks at Kiev-Pechersk Lavra 100 years ago, was found in Church of the Saviour at Berestove, which is currently undergoing reconstruction. The church was built in 12 century.
Restorers found a strange "piece of iron" that plunged into the wooden rafters in the left dome in a remote place which was never noticed by previous restorers.
In January 1918, the army of Bolshevik Russia led by the infamous Mikhail Muravyov shelled Kyiv for three days from the left bank of the Dnieper - from Darnitsa. The monks kept a diary in which they made notes about each artillery attack on the Kyiv Lavra. One day they wrote: the shells began to blow up on the territory of the monastery, when the priests, headed by Metropolitan Volodymyr, had their service. Entering Kyiv, the "revolutionary" Russian sailors killed the Metropolitan. For a short time, while the capital of Ukraine was in the hands of the Red Army, they killed thousands of people for the slightest suspicion of sympathy for the Central Rada (Ukrainian government) - often they were shot simply because a person spoke Ukrainian on the street.
After the Ukrainian and German troops kicked Russians out of Kyiv, the Central Commission for the Protection of Antiquities and Arts of Ukraine conducted a survey of streets and buildings to reveal what destruction was caused to the capital's by artillery bombarded of the Russian Bolsheviks. The Commission compiled a report that has survived to the present day.
According to various estimates, from five to six thousand to 15 (!) thousands of shells were fired at the city. Only on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra received about one hundred of them. The main church of the lavra - the Assumption Cathedral - received seven shrapnel shells.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra , also known as the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery, established 1051.
Restoration: fresco "Marvellous fishing with Christ", 12 century. Was painted over in 17 century, and is now being restored. The "younger" fresco was moved to another solid foundation and is now also being restored.
Before the restoration, the walls of the church are dried with electromagnetic waves.
The floor of the church is 1 meter 20 centimeters below the ground level outside. Therefore, groundwater constantly soaked the walls. About a year ago, the Italian colleagues lent this device to dry up the walls. Skeptics did not believe that the appliance could dry the walls with the help of electromagnetic waves. However, it was successful.

I thought it was a chocolate covered cigar at first. This is much better
TheShadowsLengthen
"Marvellous fishing with Christ" sounds like a religious childrens book, like " DYI boat building with Noah" or "Freefalling with Lucifer".

Oh, like the children's book AB to the Jay-Z

Wow ! Such a good post !
RealNormMacDonald
That's so fucking cool.
whyexactly
I'm guessing the "drying device" is basically a microwave.

Eastern Europe got screwed during WW2; squeezed between 2 evil empires, there was no winning.
ArgonneanPioneer
Just to clarify, the conflict mentioned in the post is the Russian Civil War (1917-1921)/World War I, not World War II.
thesixfingerman
Thanks, missed that. The interwar period was still shitty for Eastern Europe, Russia invaded both Poland and Finland, and the Holodomor.
Lolmarty
Holy shit, Ukraine on FP

I adore churches and I haven't seen much of the Orthodox ones lately so thank you, OP! ^_^

Russia - assholes since forever
LullabyJones
Really neat

I love the architecture of the monastery. So many historic buildings have been lost to attacks/war. I hope this restoration is successful.

I've been to the lavra! Gorgeous church and I'm not really a church dude

Mmm, sweet delicious history
FuckingODYSSEY
What a load of Bolsheviks. You can see plainly that thing is made of chocolate.
Cocomoo
I call Bolshevik
CryptBeast
The prime targets of Muravyov in Kiev were White Russian officers. Killing Ukrainians was a side quest. Muravyov was a crazy character but 1
CryptBeast
one of many during the time. Right before Muravyov took Kiev, Petlyura crushed a pro-Soviet mutiny in Kiev executing 300 prisoners on the 2

spot. And "Ukrainians and Germans" didn't kick Bolsheviks out of Kiev - they entered a mostly abandoned city and executed all the Jews 3
CryptBeast
they managed to round up (all who didn't flee in terror). Then they were kicked out by the locals and the Russian Volunteer corps 4

for being a bunch of peasant losers, heh. 5

Way cool! Things have impacts (pun intended) far more long term than people realize.

How did that get in there without anyone noticing a hole in the roof for 100 yrs?

They probably either DID notice the hole and patched it, figuring whatever made it was found, or they half-assed it.
LollipopFromHell
In Russia we dont build roof, roof grows around hole

Ukraine is Russia only in your wild, wet dreams.

Putin "It's very simple Ukraine is Mykraine."

Unless you are in Crimea...

They said 100 shells were dropped on that property, 7 on the building. I would assume the roof already had other shrapnel holes.
TheUpdootist
Shells a lot smaller than the first picture would lead you to believe. On a complex roof looks the ones they were showing it might be 1
TheUpdootist
Easily missed. Especially if the Shell was a dud. I'm no shell expert, but wouldn't a detonated shell be more damaged than the one shown? 2
AncientPostNecromancer
It would be obliterated. The hole was probably patched by someone not apart of the crew finding dud shells.
Reelthreat
Ummm, a guy is holding it in one of the pictures and it looks pretty fucking BIG.
FuckMeFuckYou
Yes, it's huge! I actually thought it was a small shell from like a handgun from the first pic...until I saw the pic of the guy holding it!
TheUpdootist
Yeah, but relative to the church it is small enough that it could be missed depending on where it hit. Not exactly your run if the mill 1
TheUpdootist
Flat roof. 2
