As a parent of an 8 week old...

Nov 16, 2016 3:09 AM

Maybe I'm strange but seriously sometimes babies just die for no reason and it scares the crap out of me.

For a split second my heart races and I think about how I'm going to tell my wife that our baby is dead. Then he moves or I poke him and he's not dead and I relax again. Anyways, just wanted to share this aspect of parenting they don't tell you about.

I do this with my dog. He'll be all still and asleep so I make a weird sound until he moves to prove he's not dead.

Same. When we brought our little one home I could hardly sleep for weeks. Never felt so protective before or since.

You're not the only one. I did this too. He would be sleeping so quietly, I used a mirror to check for breathing

My baby niece she cried for 15 mins, when she stopped I was relived for about 10 sec before I felt to check she was breathing.

This is so true, I have twins, the first time they slept through the night I woke in a panic thinking "they're dead!"

Oh I remember those days, eventually you'll wonder how you made it past toddlerhood

As a mother of an eight month old, it doesn't get easier.

Life is fragile.

This is why I co slept, had to feed her every 2 hrs anyway.

Babies are the only thing that can shit, piss and puke on you and you still love it.

I'm 8 months pregnant with my first, and this terrifies me also. Some friends of my best friend just lost their 2 month old to SIDS.

I am in exactly in the same boat. Yesterday he ate so much he stopped breathing for a whole 6-7 seconds. Scary af.

I have a 9 week old. Same. I check his breathing all the time. I even bought an Owlet for piece of mind.

I have a 16 y/o black lab. Who naps like a limp body.I stare @him every time 2 see if he breaths, sometimes i cant tell & feel my heart drop

Yes, I had the same paranoia. Welcome to parenthood.

As a father of a five week old boy, I can totally relate =) If hes been too still I blow in his face and he usually moves and all is well =)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. 3 week old is quite the screamer and fussy with acid reflux. When he isn't screaming I can't even sleep because I'm not sure if dead.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember waking up every 5 minutes if I dint hear him and he was just asleep , damn kids scare the shit out of us when they are babies

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're not alone.

Cherish the potato phase for it will soon be gone. For now being alive is all that matters. Every day brings new challenges. All are scary.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The potato phase is wonderful. My son is still in it and he's 5 months... wayy more chill than this older sister.

As a guy who is expecting, this is not comforting

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My best advice..you will NEVER look back and think I held them too much. Enjoy the baby snuggles. Mine are 15 and 13 now.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the upside, sleeping babies are adorable and you will spend hours gazing on their cuteness. Congrats on your expecting-ness!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you I definitely looking forward to it all

I have 3 and I poked them all while they were sleeping. I was always so paranoid.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to poke my youngest brother to check if he was alive while the poor little bastard was still alive. Explains why he's a cranky

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Insomniac now.

First time our daughter slept through the night, wife & I got almost six glorious hours of sleep. Woke up at the same time, ran to (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

her bedroom. She was, of course, fine. We were scared shitless for a few moments.

As Billy Connolly says "Don't buy one of those baby intercoms. Babies pretend to be dead. They're bastards, and they do it on purpose "

Just couldn“t help but read it in his voice. :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Try and find the whole skit, which I think is from Billy and Albert, it is great.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait till he is 2 years old. You will cherish his silent times :)

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

No, then the silent times become suspicious.

I relate to you in a way similar to another person who has experienced the same thing as another.

It's like we're connected on a spiritual level...

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yes, a spiritual connection. Some might say...a spirection.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

If our spirection lasts for more than four hours, we should see a doctor.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

You are not alone. I always check on my kids before I go to bed too (5 and 7) to make sure they are ok. Old habits die hard.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I do it, too. he's almost 4 and i still poke him sometimes just to check

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do the same with my 7 and 4 yr old. Every damn night. Have to do it otherwise I can't relax.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My grandad still checks on me, I'm 19. Sometimes he yells "Are you alive" until i wake up at 3am. Im alive grandad, lmao.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I don't know why, but in my head the image of this is hilarious.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It is. When i was still in highschool he once woke me up at 2am on a school night to tank a boss he couldn't kill w my uncle. Lol.

I spent the first months of my first daughters life wishing she would move. After a year I spent my time wishing she would quit moving.

9 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 1

And then 18 years later you'll wish they'd move out.

I have a 13 month old, I wish he would go into a vegetative state just for a few minutes, just a little break is all I want

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I have a 5 a 2 and a 1 yeast old. Nyquil knocks me right out I have no idea what happens

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

So what amount of time is a 'yeast' exactly?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a 13 month old boy too, tonight I caught him standing on his toy bike like he was training for Nitro Circus -_-

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a 17 month old and a 5 month old... my 5 month old is a potato, but his older sister is a little hell raiser who climbs everything

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mine are 21, 13 and 8. It gets better. Not much, but better.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That's a nice spread, I hear the teenage years can be rough, and truth to that?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

*any

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It really depends on the kid. My oldest was a good teenager, but more difficult as a young adult actually. Late bloomer? Typical stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I was a good teen too, but horrible from 20-25 so go figure.
