Frilled Shark
Frilled sharks usually live thousands of feet below the surface, but occasionally come up to our level just to remind us how freaky the ocean can be. They look like a basic model of a shark before sharks learned how to shark.
Why they are terrifying: Because they have three-pointed teeth, as if one point just isn’t enough.
Gulper Eel
"Don't worry, it's just seaweed"
An eel with a mouth like a pelican. Little is known about this deep-sea monster, which lives around 3,000 metres below the surface and grows up to six feet long.
Why they are terrifying: Their weirdly enlarged jaws and super stretchy stomachs allow them to swallow prey as large as they are. Eek.
Fangtooth FIsh
The fangtooth fish is one of the deepest-living fish ever discovered. It has been seen as far down as 5,000 metres below sea level, where the pressure is 500 times greater than on land. Humans would be crushed to human pancakes at that pressure.
Why they are terrifying: Because although they are only around 15cm long, they have the largest teeth in proportion to their body size of any fish.
Pacific Viperfish
Pacific viperfish live 4,500 metres below the surface. They hunt by attracting prey with their glowing bellies.
Why they are terrifying: Their teeth are so big they can’t close their mouths.
Humpback anglerfish
The anglerfish lives 2,000 metres below the surface and lures its prey with light, like the viperfish, but this time from a strange glowing antenna sticking out from its head.
Why they are terrifying: I mean, just look at it.
Stargazer Fish
Stargazer fish bury themselves in the sand and wait for fish to swim right over them, at which point they spring out and eat them. They have a permanently upwards pointing head, perfectly adapted to this hunting technique.
Why they are terrifying: Just imagine looking down to the seabed and seeing that face.
Giant SpiderCrag
The largest crab on earth lives up to 1,000ft below sea level, and can measure up to 12ft from claw tip to claw tip.
Why they are terrifying: Have you ever been nipped by a normal-sized crab? It hurts. A giant crab would probably nip your toe off.
Giant Isopod
Giant isopods are like massive sea woodlice, and have been found in depths of up to 2,000 metres. They grow to around 30cm long, and are mainly scavengers but have also been known to catch live prey.
Why they are terrifying: These guys are the ultimate survivors. They have been around since all the continents were stuck together in one lump known as Pangea and they can go four years without eating, so really it’s only a matter of time before they take over the earth.
Goblin Shark
Goblin sharks live up to 1,300 metres below sea level. They have eel-like tails similar to frilled sharks, and grow to around 3.5 metres long. They scan the seabed with super-long snouts, detecting the tiny electrical currents given off by all living things.
Why they are terrifying: Because they seem to detach their whole mouth from their body to grab their prey.
Giant Squid
The giant squid can grow up to 18 metres long. That’s the same as a six-storey building. That is very, very big. Their eyes are as big as beach balls.
Why they are terrifying: Because some people think they eat small whales. And small whales aren’t very small.
Terrible-Claw Lobster
Only discovered in 2007, this aptly named lobster was discovered in the deep ocean off the coast of the Philippines.
Why they are terrifying: Because we know hardly anything about them. That and the fact that they have two different sizes of claw, like a knife and fork.
Megamouth Shark
The megamouth shark grows to up to 5.5 metres long, yet wasn’t discovered until 1976. It has a massive mouth with a glowing light inside to attract its tiny plankton prey.
Why they are terrifying: Because only 55 specimens have ever been seen. If something so big can hide from is for so long, what else might be down there?
No cat so here is my dog tax
I straight up stole all the shit above from yahoo which stole it from buzzfeed.

The Frilled Shark is the Model-T of sharks.

NigletDaycare
So which ones can I eat?
Sh4dowWalker96
All of them, probably. Just expensive as hell.
NotDrakeBell
This. This is why I have fears of the ocean.
iDrinkDrano
I'm putting money down that there's a supercrustacean, tens of meters long, which travels the sea floor eating scraps and life alike.
melodramaticbat
You know there's actually an even bigger squid called the COLOSSAL squid. I mean, it's not as lengthy, but more substantial.
bbirbb
Much heavier, and instead of just suckers in its tentacles, that fucker has spinning claws!
justadogwithablog
I exhaled loudly at 'small whales aren't very small.' +1
Candymostdandy
I once smoked a joint with Spidercrag, he's a funny crab, that Spidercrag.
Drlakata
Giant SpiderCrag sounds like something off of Pikmin.

just imagine what we haven't discovered in the deepest parts of the ocean. Reason#123 I noped out of swimming in the ocean permanently.
goroshek
i like the ocean enough, but if my feet cant touch the floor, i nope my way right back to a safe waist-depth
MrDragonBalls95
The bad thing is that we have barely even explored our own oceans, so there are worse things down there that we don't know about.
dullawolf
For sure. There is some scary shit down there.
MrDragonBalls95
Like Cthulu or some shit.
Stuebydoo
Scifi movies owe so much to the freaky creatures that live in our ocean

I actually think the goblin shark is kinda cute too.
Khanecz
You missed your chance of explaining why that dog is terrifying and where he lives
dullawolf
HA! He is not terrifying!! He was suppose to make the world seem less scary!
SteelIsTheAnswer
Pfft. "He lives w/e feet above sea level. He's scary because of near deadly gas attacks and he's a relentless hunter; chasing squirrels...
SteelIsTheAnswer
for years and never giving up despite never catching a one."

i still wanna see scientists take a human body down to 5000 meters and release it, then film it. like what would happen?
ikeacracy
It would be wet and unable to breath, nothing else.
jacopopeterman
so it wouldnt implode?
ikeacracy
Nope, the body is mostly incompressible, only the air-filled cavities would really be affected. Basically lungs, windpipe and sinus cavities
speakfaithfully
Also, great reading before I begin getting more SCUBA diving certifications later this month.
AllYourPeppermintAreBelongToMe
You'll be fine! S.O. and his father are SCUBA divers. They mostly dive in Puget Sound near Seattle, WA, U.S. He gave me a pretty rock 1/
AllYourPeppermintAreBelongToMe
from about 90-100 meters deep. He saw a wolf eel two or three trips ago. Fuckin' ugly looking thing. 2/2
AllYourPeppermintAreBelongToMe
FEET, not meters. Sorry.
dullawolf
Good luck in the land of nopes. Just make sure you can see the bottom of where you are diving and you have a 30% higher chance of survival

Right now there are 4 people that favorited this. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT! Do you always want to be reminded of what nightmares exist!?
FrustratedBluffing
The goblin shark one is stupid, most fish feed by extending their jaw. http://oufiero.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/laveis2_031.gif
dullawolf
you go and tell that goblin shark he is stupid. see what happens
FrustratedBluffing
He wont attack me, because A) He lives in the deep ocean and B) Goblin sharks aren't aggressive to humans.
aurapotato
If it involves the ocean then yes. I don't plan on going there any time soon. And I don't think what is in there can get me up here!!

Do you know how the angler fish mates? The female absorbs the male except for the gonads, which she keeps attached for baby making.

Because I am writing a SciFi verse that is fueled by my nightmares. Anything that gives me the willies is useful.
