I made a resin-infused pancake throwing disc that will never rot or mold. Why do I do these things?! Because someone asked me to.
Source: https://youtu.be/uE_dSIumQ5Q

The day started off normally enough. A cup of coffee and mixing up some pancake batter.

And here is my perfectly ordinary griddle. A 1/2 thick piece of steel propped precariously on two plastic sawhorses.

Lets fire up the roofing torch!

Do I need to say don't try this at home? Don't try this at home...

Within about 2 minutes time my table was up to pancake temps. 280*F

The first panacke is always the victim on an unknown griddle. I got mine a little dark.

The other thing is I wanted a LARGE 10" pancake. I was having a bit of trouble getting one that size.

So I thinned out the batter a bit and skipped the ladle. Here I am pouring it directly from the bowl. (I also get a satisfying sizzle in the video...)

Just a hair over 10". Success!
Now this puppy needs to cool and dry out. For the next step, moisture is the enemy. I let my pancake sit out in the shop for about 5 hours before moving on.

Enter my vacuum chamber. Which has a 10" inside diameter. And the reason for my required sizing.

The product I'm using is called Catus Juice. Stabilzing resin is much different from casting resin. What we want is for the Catus Juice to permeate the cell structure of the object.

The pancake is completely submerged, a vacuum is applied and for the next 3 1/2 hours, we pull all the air out of the pancake. All those bubbles are evidence of that air escaping.
After the bubbles stop, we release the vacuum and the pancake will suck up resin into all the voids.

It's left to soak in the resin for a full 24 hours and then removed. At this point we have a very dense object that will sink in liquid.

The resin is in the pancake, but it won't harden until cooked. This resin cures at 200*F. So I pop it in the toaster oven for 45 minutes. All the leftover resin in the vacuum chamber can be reused and will just be poured back into the bottle!

45 minutes later and I've got a VERY HARD stabilized pancake. It will no longer bend, flex mold or rot. It can be broken but would require quite a bit of force to do so.

You can see here, one of the side effects of thinning out the batter and getting a 10" disc is that I now have very little thickness to work with.

I attach it to the wood lathe with hot glue. I've had success gluing bread to the lathe this way in the past. I'm going to give you a beat to let that realization sink in...

Here I'm just cleaning up the resin around the edge and getting the shape back into round.

What I want is to make a concave underside to my pancake. This should give it some lift and make for a more stable throwing disc.

I got a little nervous at the lathe, so I removed it and just hand sanded the top. I'm sanding the pancake.
Is that a euphemism?
Can we make it one?

A little bit of work and I did get the shape I was going for! Not putting it off any longer.
It needs a test flight!

IT WORKS!!

As you can see. It works pretty well, but it can also take a beating. Thanks for looking!

@kludge77 I follow your channel. Did you put something on the saw horses to keep the steel from melting them?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No. I got away with just my normal dumb luck!

Sanding your pancake sounds a bit painful

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I've seen some guys that use cactus juice to stabilize wood putters. I'm glad you found a more practical use for it.

What's on your shoulder? A flag??

Why do you have experience gluing bread to a lathe???

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I made a bread necklace.

Because, why not? Now make a french bread sword.

Did you really need to make your own griddle though?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

My normal griddle would cook a 10" pancake. I just thought this would look super cool on video. :)
